3 photo: Frankss photo: Viditocho Dior Omotesando Omotesando Street Jingumae Shibuya-ku Tokyo Omotesando Street is an avenue in Tokyo and home to many upscale shops featuring several international brand outlets Hence, the street is sometimes referred to as 'Tokyo's Champs-Élysées' On this prime location, ese architect duo Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, known collectively as SANAA, has designed the building that accommodates a store for fashion retailer Dior The building is gift-wrapped in a translucent skin that allows the building underneath to show through The effect is achieved by using clear glass on the outside and a second displaced layer of translucent acrylic on the inside 2003 Client SANAA Dior viditocho photo: Viditocho Daily from The exact address is: Jingumae , Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, Tokyo Prefecture

5 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Carina Store Minami-Aoyama, Minato-Ku Tokyo php Carina is a children's and mother's clothing store, designed by Kazuyo Sejima The shop is wrapped in two façades The inner façade is made up of a steel structure and large glass windows The outer façade is made out of white expanded metal, similar to the weaves that were used for the New Museum at the Bowery in New York The outer façade covers up almost the complete building, except for the entrance door and one window on the second floor This is a daring approach as it provides an introspective look at first glance But, as in many recent architecture in Tokyo, the shop comes to life when you take a closer look and even more so when dusk falls over the city SANAA Franks photo: Frankss 11:00-19:00 hr (Tue-Fri), 12:00-19:00 (Sat), 12:00-18:00 (Sun) Take Omotesando station, leave it at exit A5 and walk in eastern direction Then take the first street to your right Take the second street to the left The store is then next to the Aveda building 5

7 photo: Joyce Elshout photo: Joyce Elshout Church of the light Kita-kasugaoka Osaka This church is a small structure on the corner of two streets at Ibaraki, a residential neighbourhood It is located 25km north-northeast of Osaka in the western foothills of the Yodo valley railway corridor The church has an area of roughly 113 m² The church was planned as an add-on to the wooden chapel and minister's house that already existed at the site The Church of the Light consists of three 59m concrete cubes (59m wide x 177m long x 59m high) penetrated by a wall angled at 15, dividing the cube into the chapel and the entrance area One indirectly enters the church by slipping between the two volumes, one that contains the Sunday school and the other that contains the worship hall The benches, along with the floor boards, are made of re-purposed scaffolding used in the construction A cruciform is cut into the concrete behind the altar, and lit during the morning (as it is facing east) It took more than two years to complete Floor area/size m² Tadao Ando Arno photo: Joyce Elshout Daily from 1000 till 1800 h Take JR line (Tokaido Honsen line) from Osaka station to Ibaraki It takes 12 minutes Then take Kintetsu bus from Ibaraki station bound for Kasugaoka Park Get of the bus at Kasugaoka Park Then 2 minutes walk to Church of light 7

8 photo: Christian Beirle González photo: Christian Beirle González Shibuya Station Extension Shibuya 24-1 Shibuya Nichome Tokyo Tadao Ando's Shibuya Station Extension is composed of two prime gestures: an elliptical shell with the span of 256x79 feet, and the connection of that shell to elements of Tokyo's underground station network such as escalators, passages and tunnels, thus making it an integral part of Tokyo's transportation system Tadao Ando's new Shibuya Station extension is all about making travel fun again: "A station should be a place where visitors think "I was glad to come to this station" or?that station was fascinating","ando says, as he examines the three-story atrium of the nearly completed building Ando's design is based on what he calls a "chichusen", or underground spaceship Commuters board the buried flying saucer near the top of the atrium and are carried down to the tracks at its base "Because this station has an atrium from top to bottom, you can easily see where you are it gives you a sense of security," Ando says photo: Christian Beirle González 2008 Tadao Ando christian_02 Shibuya Subway Station - access Fukutoshin, Ginza or Hanzomon Line 8

11 Tower of Winds Minamisaiwai Yokohama The Tower of Winds is a project largely indicative of Toyo Ito's approach to architecture, particularly his belief in the importance of technology and its vital role in the future of architecture The project not only embraces technology and involves it in a dialogue with the city, but also establishes a direct symbolic relationship between nature and the installation By day the tower, clad in perforated aluminum panels, reflects the city through the reflective surfaces covering the steel core The project is rather humble, literally reflecting the city through the complexity of its material Come night time, the Tower of Winds takes a more pro-active role, translating sound and wind into light through two computers sensing the varying wind and noise levels and accordingly powering 1300 lamps, 12 neon rings, and 30 flood lights at its base 1986 Toyo Ito photo: Tomio Ohashi 11

13 photo: Takeshi Yamagishi photo: Takeshi Yamagishi Asakusa Culture and Tourism Center Kaminarimon Tokyo The center extends Asakusa's lively neighborhood vertically and piles up roofs that wrap different activities underneath, creating a 'new section' which had not existed in conventional layered architecture Equipments are stored in the diagonally shaped spaces born between the roof and the floor, and by this treatment we could secure large air volume despite its just average height for high-and medium-rise buildings Furthermore, the roofs not only divide the structure into 8 one-storied houses but also determine the role of each floor First and second floor has an atrium and in-door stairs, creating a sequence from which you can feel the slope of the two roofs On 6th floor, taking advantage of the slanted roof, we were able to set up a terraced floor with which the entire room can function as a theater As angles of the roofs inclined toward Kaminari-mon and the heights from the ground vary from floor to floor, each floor relates differently to the outside, giving unique character

14 photo: Toyo Ito & Associates photo: Toyo Ito & Associates Tama Art University - Hachioji Library Yarimizu Hachioji Tokyo Ito Toyo, who is one of the leading architects in, designed the Hachioji Library Regarding the design of this newly opened library, the entire first floor slopes gently from the front entrance Its exterior glass walls and large arches allow the contours of the natural environment surrounding the campus to extend into the interior creating an exhilaratingly open space The first floor features an all-purpose and gallery space available to hold various events and exhibitions as well as a theater area with a big screen At the back of the first floor, students are able to read the latest magazine issues and view video materials On the second floor, there are open access stacks holding about 100,000 books as well as private reading seats and photocopying machines The Hachioji Library contains about 77,000 ese books, 47,000 foreign books and 1,500 periodicals photo: Toyo Ito & Associates Toyo Ito 14

15 Shinonome Canal Court Shinonome Tokyo Shinonome Canal Court is a remarkable experimental multifamily housing project in Tokyo, aimed at revitalizing the role of housing in the XXI century society, and at the same time renewing the ese capital's waterfront To this end, the project featured the participation of renowned architects The main idea is based on a type of housing that is flexible enough to accommodate small offices and home offices (SOHOs) and thus include economic activities (which are often absent in many residential complexes) to improve the social relations of its inhabitants as well as adjusting to their current lifestyles The complex should be flexible enough to accommodate family units, housing for singles or for the elderly To this end, the Urban Development Corporation held a competition in which 6 teams were: Riken Yamamoto (Block 1), Toyo Ito (Block 2), Kengo Kuma (Block 3), Yama s (Block 4), ADH s (Block 5) Akoto Motokura (Block 6) photo: Takahiro Tanabe 2005 Main designer, Landscape architect Toyo Ito ADH s & Workstation Akoto Motokura Keiji Hori Keisuke Yamamoto ON-SITE Riken Yamamoto Yama s 15

16 Tiffany Ginza Ginza Tokyo Prominently located on a broad boulevard in Ginza, the city's high-end shopping district, the new store fills the base of an aging, nine-story office building acquired by the New York retailer for its Tokyo headquarters "We wanted this building to visually represent Tiffany in," explains Michael Crist, president of Tiffany & Co, Adding fresh sparkle and luster to the tarnished structure, Kuma's proposal for a new facade plus an interior renovation won the heart of Tiffany's competition jury Both client and architect wanted to front the street with a uniform elevation, though the store itself only occupies the bottom three floors of the building The first level targets the young, trendy shopper, the second aims at the big spender, and the third hosts a customer-service area in addition to a salon Tenant office space occupies the remaining floors above Inspired by Tiffany's signature diamond setting, in which the cut stone is lifted from the ring photo: 16

18 One Omotesando Kitaaoyama Tokyo The project is the head office building of a fashion group that stands at the entrance to Omotesando, often called the most beautiful avenue in Tokyo Omotesando is a picturesque boulevard lined on both sides with huge zelkova trees that leads to Meiji Shrine, the largest Shinto shrine in Tokyo My aim was to make these trees resonate and not conflict with the building We created a mullion; 45 cm deep with laminated wood made of larch supporting the curtain wall The stems would resonate with the lumber and the vertical lines of mullions would resonate with vertical lines of the trees The wooden mullion also resonates with Meiji Shrine's wooden architecture The mullion contributes to energy conservation by shielding the interior from direct sunlight and mitigates the greenhouse effect by fixing carbon dioxide production Although 's Building Standard Law prohibits the use of wood on the exterior walls of buildings in large urban areas we were able to obtain special permission photo: Wiiii 18

19 photo: Daici Ano photo: Daici Ano Sunny Hills Minamiaoyama Tokyo This shop, specialized in selling pineapple cake (popular sweet in Taiwan), is in the shape of a bamboo basket It is built on a joint system called "Jiigoku-Gumi", traditional method used in ese wooden architecture (often observed in Shoji: vertical and cross pieces in the same width are entwined in each other to form a muntin grid) Normally the two pieces intersect in two dimensions, but here they are combined in 30 degrees in 3 dimensions (or in cubic), which came into a structure like a cloud With this idea, the section size of each wood piece was reduced to as thin as 60mm 60mm As the building is located in middle of the residential area in Aoyama, we wanted to give some soft and subtle atmosphere to it, which is completely different from a concrete box We expect that the street and the architecture could be in good chemistry Floor area/size m² 19

20 Nezu Museum Minamiaoyama Tokyo "I wanted to create a huge roof", says Kengo Kuma of the new Nezu Museum, designed to house the collection of wealthy ese industrialist Kaichiro Nezu on a lusciously pastoral site in the Aoyama district of Tokyo The big, minimally articulated roof is a Kuma signature His Hiroshige Ando Museum (AR October 2001) was just a huge shed clad in cedar slats, but it had a powerful lyricism Kuma's roofs are abstractions of traditional ese architecture, in which overhanging eaves shelter and shade, subtly blurring the boundary between inside and out The new museum provides six gallery spaces, four more than the previous building Each gallery is devoted to a different artistic or craft discipline and works are displayed in simple glass cabinets Kuma's sober new galleries provide an ascetically neutral backdrop so the collection can shine

21 Waketokuyama Minami Azabu Tokyo The screen-like facade turns out to be cinder block-colored bricks set on end in a blackened steel frame A meter back is the entry courtyard and the stark glass box of the restaurant, which feels suspended in the thick forest behind it Floor area/size m² 21

22 Suntory Museum of Art Akasaka Tokyo The exterior of the building is covered with vertical louvers made of white ceramic panels, giving the building a transparent feeling Because ceramic panels are rather weak they are usually thickened, or cast into concrete for enhanced strength, making them appear heavy and dull a far cry from the delicate imagery of a tea bowl The development of a new method of reinforcing thin ceramic panels with aluminum extrusion made it possible to use extra-fine edges in the details The interior finishes are wood and traditional "washi" (ese paper) which create a natural warmth while admitting a soft light

23 ADK Shochiku Square Tsukiji Tokyo Although remaining in continuity with ese traditions with the clarity of structural solutions, implied tectonics, and importance of light and transparency, Kengo Kuma does not restrain himself to the banal and superficial use of 'light' materials Instead, he goes much deeper, extending to the mechanisms of composition to expand the possibilities of materiality He utilizes technological advancements which can challenge unexpected materials, such as stone, into providing the same sense of lightness and softness as glass or wood Kuma attempts to attain a sense of spatial immateriality as a consequence of the 'particulate nature' of the light and establishing a relationship between a space and the natural round around it Floor area/size m² 23

24 RAGTAG Jingumae Tokyo RAGTAG means RAG = worn out TAG = label RAGTAG is a second-hand clothes shop The building was designed by Kazuyo Sejima (SANAA), the elevation with frosted glass perfectly characterizes her minimalist style 2003 SANAA 24

25 Doric Minamiaoyama Tokyo Kengo Kuma is an etusiastic exponent of postmodern pastiche One of the result of that period is this building, bompleted in 1991 The seven story structure, contaning offices and stores, on a tight traingular site

27 Baisoin Temple Minamiaoyama Tokyo A slanted black wall covered with deep-ribbed metal louvers is a contemporary edition of the tile roof that used to symbolize the temple The metal louvers appear to change their color and shape in many different ways in response to the direction and intensity of the light This roof is the sensitive antenna of natural phenomena, which serves to remind the people its changes The bottom of the slanted wall of louvers is the entrance to the building The louvers are rising up from the street level on which this building stands, allowing the city's activities to overflow into the building In the same way as temples and churches used to serve as urban public spaces, I planned to integrate the city and the temple into one space Inside of the temple, three halls are placed vertically The hall on the first floor can be used for concerts accommodating 350 people Floor area/size m² 27
