As a director and design principal of Architectus, Ray has an active role in developing the strategic direction of the business and leads multiple project teams. His design approach is to work from the tenant back to achieve commercial viability, efficiency, aesthetic quality and civic value.

Esch Architects: ingenhoven architects + Architectus Christoph Ingenhoven, Duesseldorf; Ray Brown, Architectus, Sydney Project architects: Martin Reuter (ingenhoven architects), Mark Curzon (Architectus) Client: DEXUS Property Group, DEXUS Wholesale Property Fund, Cbus Property Use: office building Height: 139 metres Completion: 2011 Location: Sydney, Australia With its elliptical footprint and its moderate height of 139 m, this office highrise is at a slight angle to the street grid, meaning that all the offices have a direct view of Sydney Harbor and the famous Harbor Bridge. From the public plaza at the foot of the building steps offering seating and a café area lead to the foyer. The facades of the foyer storey feature adjustable glass lamellas and folding glass elements that can be raised during the day and allow fresh air to stream through the lobby. The central atrium extends over the entire height of the building, 130 m, with the natural flow of air being drawn up by the chimney effect and dispersed at roof level, guaranteeing permanent air exchange. The tower is fully glazed, both the interior walls of the atrium and the elevator, as well as the external, naturally ventilated double facades which is a first for a highrise in Australia. This double facade allows for optimum levels of daylight, decreases the thermal load and heat loss, and accentuates the homogenous, crystalline overall appearance of the building. Each floor contains up to 1,600 square metres of office space; nearly half the office space is no further than 4.5 meters from the facade. On the 14th storey, the office space is set back and surrounded by a wraparound terrace. A glass protects the roof terrace with a wooden decking and trees on the 28th floor. A trigeneration system powered by gas and solar energy generates the necessary cooling and heating energy and provides electricity to the office floors; an evacuated tube solar collector on the roof with a 500-square-metre surface helps to cool the building through the use of heat exchangers.

5 In addition, the in-house water treatment system cleans up to 100,000 litres of black water every day 75,000 litres of it from Sydney s sewers for use in the cooling systems and for flushing toilets. As the only office building so far, 1 Bligh has received the highest possible 6 Star Green Star Office Design certification from the Green Building Council of Australia. With its dense agenda including sustainability, public space, workplace environment and view, this relatively small high-rise sets new Australian standards. From the jury s verdict: With its moderate dimensions this building is outstanding in terms of its grandiose overall quality. It avoids the iconic in favour of a firm emphasis on user requirements and the view from the offices. Ecological criteria / sustainability Indoor lighting: Daylight from the external perimeter and the internal atrium. Ventilation: Glass louvres in the south facade provide natural ventilation of the lobby and atrium. Materials: Sustainable construction materials; reduced embodied energy through the use of high-strength concrete; low-voc materials used through-out the building; use of recycled timber, concrete and recycled steel. Water: On-site sewage treatment of 100,000 litres a day of waste water (blackwater) from the building and from city sewage pipes; a 65,000-litre rain-water harvest tank provides rainwater for irrigation. Water-efficient appliances; all water use is monitored via the Building Management System for maximum efficiency. Energy: A trigeneration system uses gas and solar energy to generate cooling, heating and electricity; 500 m2 of roof-mounted solar panels provide energy to directly power the absorption chiller; a hybrid air conditioning system of chilled beams on the perimeter facade and a low-temperature VAV system. Double-skin facade: Double-glazed inner skin of high-performance glass; outer skin of clear glass separated by a naturally ventilated cavity that contains an automated blind for optimum solar control and daylight reflectance while maintaining views. Service: 350 lockable bicycle spots, changing rooms with17 male and female shower cubicles in the basement, shower facilities on each office floor and 290 lockers Certification: Australian Green Star Rating: 6 Star Green Star Office Design V2 of the Green Building Council of Australia; 5 Star NABERS Energy Rating

The symbol of the International Highrise Award consists of paper-thin layers of titanium, which, with the help of electron beam meeting (EBM), can be layered in almost any shape. The process, which is primarily used in the manufacture of medical implants, as well as the aerospace and automotive industries, is currently regarded as the most innovative production technique in rapid manufacturing. A building consists first and foremost of thoughts and ideas, which at the design stage manifest themselves in the form of concepts, plans, data and presentations, and later as contracts, lists of faults, agreements etc a tower of documents. And even after it has been finished, Thomas Demand says, describing his work, as a result of various tenants, visitors, uses, opinions, and congregations being stacked one on top of the other, a high-rise can be interpreted as a tower that represents different conditions, intentions, movements, changes, and deposits. The internationally renowned artist Thomas Demand studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, the Düsseldorf Academy of Art and at Goldsmiths College in London. In recent years his works have been displayed in numerous solo exhibitions, including in the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2005), the Fondazione Prada, Venice (2007), the Center for Contemporary Art, Kitakyushu (2008), the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2009), and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, in Rotterdam. Demand lives in Berlin.

7 Exhibition BEST HIGHRISES INTERNATIONAL HIGHRISE AWARD 2012 November 17, 2012 January 13, 2013 Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), first floor Schaumainkai 43, Frankfurt am Main Open: Tue, Thu Sat \Wed , Sun Guided Tours: on Saturdays and Sundays, 2 p.m., with Yorck Förster For the International Highrise Award (IHA) Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) has nominated a total of 26 buildings built within the last two years from 17 countries worldwide. On the first floor DAM presents all the nominated projects as part of the Best Highrises exhibition and thus showcases the range of ideas and current trends in contemporary highrise architecture. The 2012 winner, the 1 Bligh Street office building in Sydney, Australia was designed by ingenhoven architects from Düsseldorf in cooperation with the Sydney studio Architectus and is documented in detail on its own exhibition platform, as are the four other finalist projects. The 2012 finalists include four residential highrises, two of which are in North America and two in Southeast Asia: Eight Spruce Street in New York by Gehry Partners, Absolute Towers in Mississauga (near Toronto) by Beijing-based studio MAD Architects, Pinnacle@Duxton in Singapore by ARC Studio, and The Troika in Kuala Lumpur by Foster + Partners. The special commendation for a revitalization project was awarded to the Deutsche Bank towers in Frankfurt/Main, renovated by Hamburgbased architecture studio gmp (Gerkan, Marg und Partner) as technical architects in collaboration with Mario Bellini Architects from Milan for the design. The exhibition displays structural designs and technical details in the form of architectural plans. The façades and interiors are depicted in numerous photographs, and for some buildings there are interviews with the architects and developers. Models of the finalist highrises give the observer an idea of the buildings in their entirety. Short texts explain the key aspects of each project as well as the ecological criteria. Accompanying Catalog An accompanying catalog entitled "Best Highrises 2012/13. Internationaler Hochhaus Preis 2012 / International Highrise Award 2012" has been published by Edition detail. 8 Partners International Highrise Award 2012 City of Frankfurt/Main Frankfurt/Main is the dynamic financial and trade fair city with Germany s most striking skyline. A stone s throw from the high-rises there are cozy Ebbelwoi (cider) taverns and historical attractions such as the Imperial Cathedral (Kaiserdom) and the Paulskirche, the cradle of German democracy. As the focal point of the Rhine-Main region, Frankfurt is one of the leading European corporate centers. Its central location, the excellent infrastructure with the largest continental airport, the concentration of future-oriented companies and its international flair give the city a top ranking. Measured by the size of Frankfurt, its cultural pickings are formidable. The curtain rises on a performance over one hundred times a week. Frankfurt has the Museumsufer and well-known institutions, for example Kunsthalle Schirn, the Städel, Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), and the Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK). Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM), Frankfurt am Main When it opened in 1984, DAM was the first architecture museum in Germany. It organizes temporary exhibitions addressing national and international architectural and urban planning themes. As a center for the discussion of current questions it stages a series of conferences and workshops, issues numerous publications and is represented on national and international juries. The architecture of the Museum, which is located on the Museumsufer in Frankfurt, is the work of the renowned Cologne architect Oswald Mathias Ungers. An abstract house-within-a-house, which, using its own basic architectural means, makes architecture its theme, was incorporated in the historical gründerzeit villa.
