2 Caring for the families of those who served their country FROM THE WIDOWS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Dear friends I returned from overseas in time for ANZAC Day where I attended the Dawn Service at Green Point, Brighton Beach then into the city to participate in the March to the Shrine. Despite the wet conditions it was wonderful to see so many people along St Kilda Road and the Shrine precinct. FROM THE EDITOR Hi everyone I spent Mother's Day seeing 'Strictly Ballroom' - a fabulous show and much better than the Sydney version. By the time you read this column I will have had a much-anticipated short break in Murwillimbah to catch up with family in May. I hope you're all rugging up against the cold and keeping warm! Cheers Dot Byrne Noelle in Tromso, Norway My holiday was spent in Surrey, England with my sister and we enjoyed a cruise from Dover to Norway and the Faroe Islands. I'm pleased to report that we were fortunate to see the Northern Lights and the Solar Eclipse during the cruise. From the spring flowers in England to autumn here in Melbourne. I hope our winter will be kind to us - enough rain for the farmers and snow for the skiers. Have you had your flu shot yet? Planning is well underway for Legacy Sunday so please keep 30 August free. Keep warm and safe. Noelle Pratt FROM THE WIDOWS CLUB CO-ORDINATOR Hello ladies I hope everyone is well during this busy time of the year. We have had school holidays, Easter and ANZAC Day over the past months. The Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance was particularly moving. It was great to see that the weather didn t dampen the fantastic attendance of 80,000 people. The March later in the day was also well attended. This was an exciting time for me as my son, Lachlan, went with fellow high school students from the 38 Army Cadet Unit to his first ANZAC service. I have started receiving inquiries about Legacy Sunday and would encourage everyone to register early this year. Please find the registration form to attend on the back cover of this issue. If you have any enquiries please contact me on Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Fridays from until 3.00pm on Trisha Keevers LEGACY WIDOWS PRAYER We pray for help and guidance To keep us safe and well, and to be kind to one another. Also help us to give support to those who need it. AMEN IN FLANDERS FIELDS In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place, and in the sky The larks still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe, To you from failing hands we throw The Torch: be yours to hold it high! If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields Lt Col John McCrae ( ) (A Canadian Artillery Medical Officer, who died on 28th January 1918 whilst on active service in France. He is buried at Wimereux, France.) Fear not that you have died for naught; The Torch you threw to us we caught! And now our hands will hold it high, Its glorious light shall never die. We ll not break faith with you who lie On many a field. R.W. Lilliard (An American Poet. The Answer was adapted from the second verse of his poem An American Answer which was first published in the New York Evening Post ) This magazine provides information on a range of services for the benefit of our members. 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Caring for the families of those who served their country INSIDE Front cover ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students...1 Hello everyone I trust that everyone is well and preparing for the onset of winter. April was certainly a very busy month with many activities centred around the Spirit of ANZAC. The Welcome Home Parade of service personnel involved in Iraq and Afghanistan (Operation Slipper) held in March, culminating in a service at the Shrine of Remembrance, was well attended and supported by the citizens of Melbourne. The reception given to these young service men and women was very heart warming. On 23 April nearly 7000 students from all parts of Victoria participated in the Legacy ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students at the Shrine and, once again, the weather was very kind to us with beautiful autumn sunshine. Not so kind was the weather on 25 April, however, for the ANZAC Day March, attended by thousands of veterans and dependents. It was great to see many of our widows and legatees participating. With the onset of winter I urge you all to have heating appliances checked to ensure that they are in safe working order. Winter can be a difficult time with increased heating bills, so please remember to let your supplier know your concession number and expiry date. This must be done yearly to ensure that you get the concession benefit you are entitled to. Legacy may be able to help if you are having difficulty in meeting the costs and are in necessitous circumstances. If this is the case, please notify Legacy House and we will see how we can assist in keeping you warm. Until the next issue of The Answer, I wish you all good health and a winter free of colds and chills. 5 Caring for the families of those who served their country Proud to be a member of Legacy s Torch Society Mrs Gwen Davis was recently inducted into the Melbourne Legacy Torch Society, a group formed to recognise like-minded people who have confirmed that they have included a bequest to Legacy in their Will. She is pictured with the President of Melbourne Legacy, Ian Harrison, receiving the Legacy Torch Society Certificate. Gwen said, I like to think that by including Legacy in my Will I am perpetuating what my husband, a Legatee, did and the money I have bequeathed to Legacy will help the children coming through from the Gulf conflicts and Afghanistan war. I know what it was like to care for a wounded soldier and I am comforted to learn that Legacy now also supports families who have lost their health due to serving their country. My husband, Albert Davis, returned home from WW2 with injuries and poor health and upon being repatriated he spent the rest of his life committed to the welfare of ex-servicemen and families of deceased veterans. Albert actually worked for Legacy in the 1960s as a finance director and later became a Legatee and he never ceased caring about veterans and their families. Legacy was very close to his heart. When I made my Will it was a conscious decision to include Legacy and I am proud to now be a member of the Legacy Torch Society, said Gwen. The Melbourne Legacy Torch Society has 150 members, including Legacy Widow, Gwen Davis, all of whom have confirmed that they have left a bequest to Legacy in their Will. If you would like more information on leaving a bequest in your Will, please contact Melbourne Legacy s Community Liaison Officer, Bruce Roberts on (03) Around the Clubs Epping Legacy Widows' Club Epping Legacy Widows' Club was invited to Legatee Derithe s home for lunch in May. It was a surprise venue and the ladies were very impressed with the 3-course meals she provided. 5

Grace, Ethel and others walked to the Cross. Lunch was enjoyed at the Top of The Range Cafe. Kenneth, the local peacock, posed for some photos, but without his tail! We headed for the bus and down came the rain. A cook's tour on the way home went past Pentridge, which looks a lot different to what we remember. For our 37th birthday in April we had the Glen Goldies entertain us in a superb concert. Some members knitted poppies, which treasurer, Jean Carter, put into a wreath for laying at the ANZAC Day service at Boronia RSL on 19 April. Thanks to the ladies who helped sell ANZAC Day badges. On Wednesday 15 April approximately 90 widows from the Outer Eastern Legacy Widows' Clubs were treated to a wonderful day out. They were escorted by 18 legatees and partners from the Outer Eastern Branch of Melbourne Legacy. The event was made possible by the generous combined support of the Whitehorse Rotary Clubs (Box Hill Central, Box Hill, Forest Hill, Mitcham and Mont Albert and Surrey Hills) and the Warrandyte Rotary Club. The Box Hill RSL provided the financial support for all of the Box Hill Legacy Widows' Club ladies who attended. They were picked up by buses and then welcomed by the owners and staff at Killara Winery, East Seville. After a beautiful lunch and a glass of wine they were entertained by winery management and taken on a short tour of the winery. The tour was followed by dessert and lots of chatter and laughter. Judging by the noisy journey home a great time was had by all. The buses, which left from the RSLs where the widows' clubs hold their monthly meetings, were provided by Outer Eastern Branch. 17 Caring for the families of those who served their country Health, hope and inspiration stroke rehab Health A large number of people will experience a stroke this year. A stroke occurs when there is a blockage or leak within a blood vessel in, or near, the brain. There are currently more than 437,000 people living in Australia who have experienced a stroke, of which more than 60% have a limitation that impairs their ability to dress or wash themselves, walk, feed themselves, drive and more. Have you ever thought about how you would manage if you were unable to prepare a sandwich or simply hold your handbag? These are two questions Joan recently encountered following her stroke in December 2014, subsequently losing strength and movement in her left arm and leg. Hope Joan is an 89-year-old Legacy widow who was devastated when she learnt she had experienced a stroke and suddenly needed help to complete what were previously simple tasks that she took for granted. 'I didn t know what I was going to do,' she explains. 'What really concerned me was that my hand didn t work anymore.' This is one of the common impairments following a stroke. Following some time at a rehabilitation hospital, Joan was discharged to a care facility. At this time her GP and clinic nurse referred Joan to Diversified Rehab for an occupational therapy program to help enable her to regain daily living skills and for hand therapy. Joan had overall reduced strength; but she also had hope. Hope is very important for rehabilitation and is something everyone can offer a friend or family member if they have experienced a stroke. Her goals were to relearn how to complete her morning routine, hold her handbag again, and open a can of soup. These were significant goals given she had no strength in her left hand and very limited movement in the arm. Joan wanted to be independent again, with all her personal tasks and also carry her own handbag in her affected hand, as 'you never know when you will need some lippy!' To be an effective therapist, one must always focus on the person and their goals while providing education and diverse therapy options. Joan practising hand control exercises with dominoes. She can now grip and place these on the mat. Prior to therapy she could not pick up any dominoes Joan can now hold her handbag following hand strengthening exercises Inspiration Joan s positive attitude, family encouragement, and commitment to her occupational therapy (OT) home program are some of the reasons for her success. She is now independently showering, drying, dressing and making cups of tea. Joan is developing strength to use her left hand to pick up small light objects such as cutlery, which was impossible only a few months ago. Most importantly, she has learnt how to hold her handbag again in her left hand with a 1kg weight for 3 minutes - and we are now aiming for 5 minutes. Tips for rehab Joan attributes her success to having functional goals that make sense to her. She also acknowledges having a professional therapy team that can create challenging and fun home therapy programs that she can practise by herself. She encourages people living with a disability to request referrals from their local GP for rehabilitation programs such as occupational therapy, speech therapy, physiotherapy, and dietitians. Most of all she encourages people to always have hope! A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed a hopeless failure may turn to glorious success. Elbert Hubbard Q and A (ask us your question!) We encourage you to or write to us with any questions about stroke or rehabilitation that we can address in the next issue of The Answer. You can shane@diversifiedrehab.com.au or post to Diversified Rehab, PO Box 296, Kew East, Vic 3102 and one of our talented therapists or a rehabilitation doctor will reply. If you would like to discuss a possible referral please call ; DVA will fund most therapy programs for Gold Card holders only. 17

Above right: Widows from Burnside Legacy Widows' Club enjoy lunch at Legacy House 'We Are Here, Too' At last after a century, women in World War 1 are being recognised for the enormous contribution they made and challenges they faced. Five nurses, including Sister Olive Haynes, are featured in the ABC miniseries 'ANZAC Girls' (produced by Screentime, with Olive played by Anna McGahan, and the DVD distributed by Roadshow) from August 'ANZAC Girls' was informed by Peter Rees book 'The Other Anzacs Nurses at War, ' (Allen and Unwin, 2008) that was largely sourced from nurses diaries and letters. The letters and diaries of Olive, compiled and edited by Margaret Young in 1991 in 'We Are Here, Too', was one of the key sources. Margaret received her mother Olive s diaries and letters from her father, Pat Dooley, following Olive s death. She chose the title 'We Are Here, Too' referring to Olive s frustration that attention was always on our boys, but our girls were almost completely ignored. 'We Are Here, Too' had sufficient audience to justify a revised second edition published in But women in war were not of mainstream interest. If it had not been for the dedication of people like Margaret that stuck with it and kept the stories alive, the current interest would not have been realised. This reprint of 'We Are Here, Too' gives the audience, who recently got to know Olive, direct access to her original and lively voice, and many photos of her and taken by her during WW1. Again inspired by 'We Are Here, Too', Olive was chosen by the WA Museum to represent the ANZAC nurses at the National ANZAC Centre at Albany, WA, at its opening in November Copies of 'We Are Here, Too' are available for $25 each through Legacy widow, Nancy Dooley, on Sister Olive Haynes was Nancy's mother-in-law. 22

23 Caring for the families of those who served their country Students pay respect to ANZAC Legacy Australia s ethnic and cultural diversity was front and centre at Legacy s 84th ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students held at the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne on 23 April. The crowd was made up of primary and high schools student from many cultural backgrounds, some wearing silver crosses, some hair ribbons and some turbans or hijabs. But one thing they had in common was respect for Australian servicemen and women, evident through the peacefulness of the 6700 strong crowd during the hour-long ceremony. The students heard from military and government officials, sang 'Advance Australia Fair' and 'Waltzing Matilda', and observed a marching contingent. The Governor of Victoria, The Hon Alex Chernov AC QC, congratulated Melbourne Legacy for its staging of the Annual ANZAC Commemoration Service for Students in this ANZAC Centenary year. He told the students in his address that they reflect our nation s bright future. It will be them who will keep the torch of remembrance burning so that our servicemen and women, who have paid the ultimate price for us, are not forgotten. It was a moving experience to see hundreds of students on the steps of The Shrine with school banners, laying beautiful wreaths around the eternal flame, and hearing the piper and the bugler who were both from Scotch College. Melbourne Legacy President Ian Harrison said, 'We not only pause to pay our respects and remember the original ANZACs of 100 years ago, but we remember all Australian soldiers and nurses who have served their country in times of war. 'Many children and families were left without a father and it is looking after these families where Legacy has played its role for 92 years. Legacy stands ready to continue to help caring for the families of those who served their country and we honour the promise a soldier made to his dying mate on the battlefield in WW1, to "Look after his missus and kids" '. We saw an increase of over 40% in the number of students who participated in this year s Commemoration Ceremony, which commemorated the Centenary of the ANZAC Landings at Gallipoli. The music was provided by the band, cadets and choir from Melbourne High School and also by the choir from Mac.Robertson Girls' High School. Both schools have been involved with the ceremony for around 60 years. 23
