1 News UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND Professor M.P.K. Sorrenson assumed the headship of the department last May for a three-year term. Dr Valerie Flint has been promoted to associate-professor. Dr L.Y. Andaya has been appointed senior lecturer and Dr Barbara J. Watson- Andaya tutor. They are both specialists in the history of Southeast Asia. Dr S.J. Wallace has resigned and returned to Edinburgh. Dr M.E.R. Bassett resigned on his re-election to parliament. Mrs Ruth Ross has completed her term as Arts Faculty senior research fellow. Mr J.R. Kenny is a teaching fellow in the department. Professor P.N. Tarling was chairman of the organizing committee of the ANZAAS Congress held in Auckland in January and Professor Sorrenson and Ms Judith Bassett were respectively chairman and secretary of the history section. The third New Zealand International Conference on Asian Studies will be held at the university May, under the chairmanship of Professor Tarling. Dr R.T. Phillips is secretary. Professor K. Sinclair, Dr Raewyn Dalziel and Dr Margaret Lamb have, returned from leave. Dr M. A.R. Graves is on sabbatical leave. Professor Tarling and Associate Professor Flint go on leave in August and Ms Judith Binney in December. VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON Dr D. Mackay has been appointed Chairman of Department for a three-year term beginning in December Dr T.H. Beaglehole is on leave until June. Professors D. Hamer and P. Munz go on leave in the second half of the year. Mr M. McKinnon has had his junior lectureship renewed for another year. Dr P.G. Robb of the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London, is visiting the department until June. UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY Dr L.E. Richardson has been promoted to senior lecturer. Craig Harlan has successfully completed his Ph.D. for the University of California at Irvine and Ann Parsonson has successfully completed her Ph.D. for the University of Canterbury. 107

2 108 NEWS Dr J.E. Cookson will be returning to the department in May from Canberra where he is currently holding a research fellowship at the Australian National University. UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO Professor W.H. McLeod has returned from leave and is acting-chairman of the department until August. Professor J. Omer-Cooper is on leave in South Africa and London until August Associate-Professor H. Morton is on leave in England and Canada also until August. Dr J.A. Airo-Farulla resigned in Mr Raeburn Lange has been appointed assistant lecturer in history, specializing in Early Modern Europe and New Zealand history. Dr Erik Olssen has been promoted to associate-professor. Mrs M. Maslen has been appointed to full-time in place of her part-time post as senior lecturer. THE J.M.
