In the last edition of the Quill the Monte Carlo or Bust Rally was previewed. In September the event took place. On Tuesday 8 th September 15 Citroen cars assembled in Leadenhall Market and provided quite a spectacle, this coincided with a lunchtime presentation on the Citroen 2CV in Lloyd s Old Library and in the evening a drivers celebration at the Brokers Wine bar in Leadenhall Market. The Tuesday events was a great prelude to the drive off from Leadenhall Market early on Wednesday 9 th September. Picture: Leadenhall Market ~ Courtesy of Driven Imagery Page 6
The cars were led out from Leadenhall Market by representatives from the Lime Street Ward, Langbourn Ward and Tom Bolt from Lloyd s. There was much flag waving and excitement in Lime Street as the cars drove into the Tower 1 layby at Lloyd s and set off for Monte Carlo. The remainder of Thursday was spent getting to Paris to meet our headline event sponsor, Amundi Asset Management for a celebration at Le Chalet des Iles, Bois de Boulogne. Next day we moved on to Magny Cours with an overnight stay at Magny Cours and a trip to the Magny Cours race circuit set us up for our journey towards and over the French Alps. The trip over the Alps in the iconic French cars was magnificent and by Sunday evening we had all arrived safely in Menton. Within striking distance of our Monte Carlo objective the drivers and support crew had a celebratory meal in Menton. Some amusing and car related incidents on the way but nothing to phase the excellent support team from 2CV Adventures equipped with their support truck and an old fire engine with workshop facilities and a spare car fixed on the roof. On Monday to coincide with the commencement of the Reinsurance Rendezvous Conference the cars rolled into Casino Square in Monte Carlo to be met by John Nelson Chairman of Lloyd s. In the evening all the drivers and support crew in their race suits attended the Lloyd s Cocktail party at the Hotel de Paris. We were delighted to be joined at the celebration in Menton and at the Lloyd s Cocktail party by Don Coombe our Three Rooms Club Hon. Life President. The whole team had a magnificent adventure but the main purpose was to raise money for Charity and that objective was achieved. We are still receiving donations but we are on course to raise over 60,000 for charity. Our sincere thanks to the Committee of the Three Rooms Club for supporting the event. Page 7

A look back through the Lloyd s Motor Club Archives.. Sunday 7th September 1958 Annual Lutine Rally Trouble at the Sugar Bowl Country Club 7th September 1958 saw the running of the Annual Lutine Rally. The competitors were required to return to the finish at the Sugar Bowl with as many as possible of the articles listed in the captioned extract from the event documentation. Some interesting items depicting the era, including item 20! Standard issue for senior market figures of the era? The LMC Committee had agreed that on return to the Sugar Bowl Country Club the drinks were free and that s where it all started to go wrong. A letter from the Sugar Bowl management on the day following the event reported: You will observe a slight increase in the charge. I think some of your members helped themselves to some bottles of drink after the closing of the bar. We found several empty bottles around the swimming pool this morning. One complaint arises from this one or more of your members presumably from amongst those swimming afterwards, threw some glasses and bottles into the pool and gave us quite a job this morning, removing the broken glass from the bottom of the pool. There is no evidence offered that could pin the unfortunate events on LMC members but maybe the uncooked sausage, man s suspender, mask, Dimple Haig bottle and the remnants of a wafer found floating in the pool gave the game away. The letter from the Sugar Bowl concludes: I was naturally glad to hear that you found our arrangements and service satisfactory, and look forward to being of service in the near future. Page 10
Very kind words or was this just a quaint way of saying, try somewhere else in future. The LMC organiser of the event responded on 10th September settling the account in the sum of 75 12s 10d ( 50 was the budget) and apologised for the behaviour of LMC members advising that the incident had been brought to the notice of the LMC Committee and the LMC letter of response states: Needless to say, disciplinary action is being taken against the offenders. Sorry readers there is nothing in the file about the punishment for the offenders but I ll keep looking in the archives. The event was won by a Mr & Mrs B driving a Buick, they were awarded the Lutine Trophy and the Navigator s Downside Cup to hold for the year. Page 11
DON T FORGET! THE LAST THREE ROOMS GET TOGETHER FOR 2015 THURSDAY 19 th NOVEMBER 2015 (YOUR INVITATION / APPLICATION IS ENCLOSED) If you have any pictures or articles for future editions of the Quill please sent them to: The Three Rooms Club, Room 805, Lloyd s, 1 Lime Street, London EC3M 7HA Or send by to: Martin Robinson martinbrob@gmail.com Page 12
