1 ~>--...,,:: >, CASFM COWRADO ASSOCIATION OF STORMWATER AND FWODPLAIN MANAGERS NEWS LEITER VOL. 2, NO. 1, JANUARY 1991 PLANNING UNDERWAY FOR 1991 ASFPM CONFERENCE --Bill Stanton, ASFPM Conference Director In approximately four months, during the week of June 10-14, 1991, the state of Colorado will be host to the 1991 ASFPM national conference. This conference provides a national forum for floodplain managers, emergency planners, disaster researchers, and federal, state, and local government officials. Prelirn.inaiy Agenda. The 1991 conference agenda will be similar to previous ASFPM conferences. Committee chairpersons will meet on Sunday morning. The Second Annual ASFPM Open Golf Tournament is being planned for early arrivals on Sunday afternoon. A reception for CASFM members and volunteers will be held Sunday evening. The six ASFPM committees will meet on Monday morning with a general membership meeting to follow Monday afternoon. The State Food Fest will be held Monday evening. The technical part of the conference will officially open Tuesday morning, closing Thursday noon. Technical field trips are scheduled for Thursday afternoon. Site visits include Boulder Creek, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project in the South Platte River corridor, local flood control and stormwater management projects in the Denver metro area, and flood warning systems in the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District. Friday will offer three optional extended excursions, an ASFPM committee chair meeting, and a CASFM general membership meeting. Spouse Tours. Spouse tours are also being planned. Tour 1 will include an overview of the city and shopping at Cherry Creek Mall. Tour 2 will visit historic Georgetown with an option to ride the narrow gauge railroad over the Georgetown loop. The third tour will visit Rocky Mountain National Park. Extended Excursions. Three optional extended excursions are being planned for the week-end after the conference. These include a one day trip to the Big Thompson Canyon, a one day "trek to the divide" near Breckenridge, and a two day trip to the mountains of the western slope. These trips will only be held if there is sufficient interest. Additional details will be provided in the registration packet. Exhibit Space. The conference has proven to be an excellent marketing vehicle for businesses that provide a service or make a product related to
2 floodplain management. The national exposure and contacts made during the conference may lead to new prospects and an improved client base. According to Dan Accurti, Exhibits Chair, between 30 and 35 exhibit spaces are being planned for the 1991 conference. Corporations or groups interested in obtaining exhibit space should contact Dan at (717) The exhibitor fee this year is $625 for ASFPM members and $725 for nonmembers. This fee includes one 8' x 10' booth with table and one free conference registration. Registration Packets. Details about the preliminary agenda, field trips, spouse tours, extended excursions, and other conference activities will be included in the registration packet to be mailed in April Registration Fee. The registration fee includes the conference notebook, conference proceedings, and participation in most activities at the hotel. Breakfasts, lunches, and out-of-hotel activities will be charged separately at or near actual cost. Registration fees depend on membership class and date of registration. The sooner you register, the lower the rate. Members of the CASFM will receive a significant discount. The 1991 registration fees will be as follows: By joining the CASFM for $25 and registering before the May 1 deadline, a local government official in Colorado can save $75 over the non-member conference rate. Local Corporate Sponsors. To help defray conference costs, local area corporations may become sponsors. In return, sponsors will be recognized in the conference notebook and at other appropriate times during the conference. A list has been made of the items that are needed and can be donated. The minimum donation amount is $100. Conference Volunteers Needed To put on a national conference of this magnitude requires a lot of effort. We will need all.kinds of individual volunteer assistance from the CASFM membership to make it a success. I have already received several offers for help but additional workers, for the following tasks, are still needed: Notebook Assemblers 4 Envelope Stuffers 4 Registration Desk 6 Runners/ Gophers 4 Room Monitors 6 Ticket Takers 6 Local Corp.
