JULY 7 & 8, 2017 Ames MONUMENT Ames Monument National Historic Landmark Symposium and Dedication Ceremony July 7 8, 2017
WELCOME Built between 1881 and 1882 in southeastern Wyoming, the Ames Monument was commissioned by the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) as a memorial to brothers Oakes Ames ( ) and Oliver Ames ( ) and their role in building the Transcontinental Railroad. The Ames Monument is sited on what was the high point of the UP, where it passed through the Laramie Mountains on its way west to meet the Central Pacific Railroad in northern Utah. Henry Hobson Richardson ( ) designed the monument, which features two inset carved relief portraits sculpted by artist Augustus Saint-Gaudens and carved by architectural craftsman John Evans. The monument was P lease join our celebration! The Ames Monument was listed as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) by the Secretary of the Interior on October 31, The Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office and program sponsors are planning a symposium, banquet, and dedication to celebrate this national recognition and the important place the monument holds in American history. Please join us at the Laramie Railroad Depot to hear a series of nationally recognized experts in the history of the Ames Brothers, H. H. Richardson, and the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. We encourage you to register for the symposium and prepurchase banquet tickets for Friday evening at Depot Park as space is limited. Then join us Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the Ames Monument for the dedication of the National Historic Landmark Plaque and recognition of the Ames Monument as Wyoming s twenty-sixth NHL. constructed by the Norcross Brothers, the primary construction company used by H.H. Richardson. The monument is nationally significant because of its association with H.H. Richardson. Historian Jeffrey Carl Ochsner calls the Ames Monument a pure essay in a distinctively American architecture that Richardson developed as he entered a phase of professional maturity in which he began to simplify form and to eliminate architectural detail.
SCHEDULE Friday, July 7, 2017 Laramie Historic Railroad Depot 1st and Kearney, Laramie Noon 1:00 P.M. 1:10-1:50 P.M. Information Table Opens Welcome by Darin Westby, P.E., Director of Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources James L. Ehrenberger Having researched Wyoming railroad history for nearly 65 years, Ehrenberger will provide an overview of the history and impacts of the Union Pacific Railroad in Wyoming. 1:50-2:30 P.M. Anna Lee Ames Frohlich Almost a century after John Ames built shovels that were used at Bunker Hill, Abraham Lincoln asked Oliver Ames and Sons to supply Union troops with shovels during the Civil War. President Lincoln, pleased with this success and interested in Oakes Ames use of profits to build two railroads across Iowa, asked Oakes to help him see that the transcontinental railroad was successfully completed. The railroad was completed in 1869 after much political and financial upheaval. Oakes was involved in raising funds and Oliver became the President of the Union Pacific. Their lives were greatly affected by this project. There are many questions surrounding this story and Anna Lee will fill in some gaps. 2:30-3:10 P.M. Ethan Carr, Ph.D. Ames Monument, completed in 1882, was a pivotal work in H.H. Richardson s career and was arguably the most significant Richardson extant work that had not yet been designated an NHL. The boundaries of the NHL District are those of the current State Park, 8.4 acres. It was nominated under Criterion 4, and Criteria Exception 7, which refers to its exceptional place in American architectural history; its NHL theme is architecture, and it was built by Richardson s frequent collaborators, Norcross Brothers. There are 19 Richardson NHL s, and we estimate 23 other extant works, many of which suffer a lack of integrity, and none of which represent such an important moment in his career. With the Ames Monument we see the moment Richardson turned from more historically-inspired forms, to naturalistic, event geological forms and materials which subsequently influenced not only his later work, but the course of American architectural history, when we consider its influence on Sullivan and Wright, in this regard. It is also a moment of maximum mutual influence between the architect and his friend, neighbor, and sometime collaborator, F. L. Olmsted. Continued...
SCHEDULE Friday, July 7, 2017 Laramie Historic Railroad Depot 1st and Kearney, Laramie 3:10-3:20 P.M. 3:20-4:00 P.M. Break Maury Klein, Ph.D. The Ames brothers were two remarkable and very different men who became key players in the building of the Union Pacific Railroad in the late 1860s. Oakes was a congressman from Massachusetts; Oliver was the head of the family business, the Ames Shovel Works in North Easton, Massachusetts. Although their roles remain controversial, their contribution was crucial in completing the grandest project of the era. 4:00-4:40 P.M. Mark Wright, AIA Architect Mark Wright presents the Ames Monument as architecture in the context of Richardson s studio practice and in its landscape. What were his sources of inspiration? How was it designed? How was it built? And what did it mean to Richardson and his closest collaborators Olmsted and Norcross? Consideration of the monument in a sequence of Richardson s other buildings demonstrates how this commission was central to his achievement as an American artist. Depot Park, Tent 6:00 P.M. 6:45 P.M. 8 BIOS Symposium Speaker Bios James L. Ehernberger has been researching Wyoming railroad history for nearly 65 years. He is well-known as a railroad photographer, historian and author. Beginning with a 34 year career with the Union Pacific, it has enabled him to succeed in a career as well as his interest in railroad history and preservation. At age 17, two of his photographs were published in a national magazine, and from that time he has assisted many authors with photographs for their publications. He has either authored or co-authored 15 railroad books, and most recently, he produced 38 locomotive pictorial books for the Union Pacific Historical Society. He has been featured on several PBS documentaries and is currently working with the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle on a monthly column covering Cheyenne s 150th anniversary and the first train into Cheyenne. Ehrenberger is a charter (and life) member of the Wyoming State Historical Society, and has served as president for the Laramie County Chapter. He has also served as president for the Union Pacific Historical Society, Rocky Mountain Railroad Club in Denver, the Wyoming State Museum Volunteers and is a member of a dozen railroad associations. Anna Lee Ames Frohlich is a great-great-great granddaughter of Oakes Ames. Her interest in this topic accelerated in 2008 when, with friends, she was given a wonderful tour of the Ames Monument by Larry Ostresh of Laramie. In 2010, she put together a slide presentation about the monument which she has given in Massachusetts, Iowa, Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado. It has been gratifying to see the interested in the history of the West. Anna Lee has also written over 65 articles for the Colorado Gambler newspaper about other branches of her family with history in the West. Continued...
BIOS Ethan Carr, Ph.D., FASLA is a professor of landscape architecture at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is a landscape historian and preservationist specializing in public landscapes. He has written two award-winning books, Wilderness by Design (1998) and Mission 66: Modernism and the National Park Dilemma (2007) that describe the twentieth-century history of planning and design in the U.S. national park system as the context for considering its future management. He is the volume editor for The Early Boston Years, of the Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted (2013) and currently directs the Cultural Landscape Management program at the University of Massachusetts. Maury Klein, Ph.D. is professor emeritus of history at the University of Rhode Island and the author of 18 books on American history, including a three-volume history of the Union Pacific Railroad. Mark Wright, AIA is a practicing architect and architectural historian based in New Jersey. His engagement with the work of H.H. Richardson began in 1980, when his mentor the architect Robert Kliment agreed that young Mark should stay an extra day in Boston to see a production of Sweeney Todd, but only on one condition: he was to spend the daylight hours at Harvard photographing Sever Hall in changing light, and return to the office prepared to give a slideshow and explain to Robert precisely why he (Robert) loved Sever so much. Ten hours with Richardson s three Cambridge buildings taught Mark how to see his work. Mr. Wright is the author of H. H. Richardson s House for Reverend Browne, Rediscovered, published in JSAH, the peer-reviewed Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. He was educated at the Rice University School of Architecture, teaches at the New York School of Interior Design, and serves on the Glen Ridge Historic District Preservation Commission. In 2010 he was awarded a MacDowell Colony Fellowship.
