2 From the first sketch to computer simulations to fascinating building sites By showcasing Frankfurt-based engineering firm Bollinger + Grohmann, the exhibition at Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) shows the work involved in realizing complex architectural projects. Spectacular buildings such as the European Central Bank in Frankfurt/Main (Coop Himmelb(l)au), the Rolex Learning Center of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (SANAA) or the extension to Frankfurt s Städelmuseum (schneider+schumacher) would not be possible without the engineers behind the scenes. Klaus Bollinger and Manfred Grohmann are structural engineers and opened their office in Frankfurt/Main some 30 years ago. Ever since they and their team have worked on challenging projects with a whole host of international architects, including Zaha Hadid, Renzo Piano and Dominique Perrault. The DAM is now devoting a special show to Bollinger + Grohmann. For once it is not the finished buildings, but the design process and the realization of the plans on the building site that take center stage. Meaning that instead of marveling at finished results, we get to glimpse the work behind the scenes. Currently under construction: The European Central Bank in Frankfurt/Main According to the plans by Vienna-based architects Coop Himmelb(l)au, a high-rise split in the middle is being built right next to Frankfurt s erstwhile wholesale market hall, erected by Martin Elsaesser in Bollinger + Grohmann devoted themselves to the demanding task of uniting the two components into a sturdy structure from the very first design sketch. They had already worked with the architects in developing the high-rise concept for the competition. Another of their tasks is modernizing the remaining sections of the historical wholesale market hall in line with preservation standards. Delicate shells: The Learning Center in Lausanne The exhibition also traces all planning and construction stages of the Rolex Learning Center. Japanese architects SANAA (Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa) were the brain behind the new heart of the campus of the Technical University in Lausanne, Switzerland. As in most of their European projects, Bollinger + Grohmann were responsible for the structural planning. The building s most striking structural elements, the unusually flat, inclined concrete shells, made for the most challenging aspect in the structural concept. Bollinger + Grohmann were also involved as structural and façade planners in SANAA s Louvre Museum in Lens (North France), which opened in December Three-dimensional planning on the computer The third project that serves to illustrate the diversity of the construction process is the Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center, completed in 2013 in Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. Once again it is a design (architects: Talik Chalabi, Vienna) that Bollinger + Grohmann accompanied from the start. A characteristic feature of this project is working jointly on three-dimensional computer models, which were drawn up by the architects and structural planners and advanced PRESSINFORMATION Page 2

3 by way of a permanent exchange. The parametric planning processes of the window geometry within the concrete structure, which juts out up to 15 meters, likewise played an important part. Parametric design is a term hotly debated by architects today. Here it means that the shape, number and arrangement of windows are based on a special method with which the geometry is gradually optimized by incorporating certain fundamental conditions, the parameters. The extreme sunlight and achieving a favorable distribution of forces within the reinforced concrete walls were decisive aspects. Yellow strip of sheeting, engineering drawings as works of art On the first floor of the DAM yellow sheeting similar to that used on building sites to manufacture reinforced concrete, runs through the room like a folded strip. This coarse setting provides the framework for the exhibition s three main projects (European Central Bank, Rolex Learning Center, Sheikh Zayed Desert Learning Center). The presentation supports the idea that the engineers drawings can be works of art in their own right. Visitors can also see films about the various building sites and view photos of them. The strip of sheeting also divides the space into smaller sections that provide in-depth information on specific topics. Further exhibition topics: Models based on computer data were produced especially for the exhibition, some of them using a 3D printer. The room devoted to skeletons showcases seven projects whose structural engineering presented particular difficulties, including, for example, the roofs of the Hungerburgbahn station in Innsbruck (architect: Zaha Hadid). So as to give an idea of the projects original size several structural details, so-called nodal points, will be shown as original parts. Visitors can also see for themselves at interactive stations how altering the parameters alters the overall composition of the support structure. The Façade / Sustainability / Refurbishment theme room displays examples of other fields of work, which likewise form part of the services the firm offers. The spectrum of exhibits ranges from large façade cross sections of the Louvre in Lens (SANAA Architects) to an original piece of wall from the Großmarkthalle, the former wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Frankfurt/Main (Coop Himmelb(l)au), on which the individual stages in the renovation of the masonry are portrayed. The room devoted to Developments features 13 projects, each of which focuses on a certain aspect, for example: The BMW Bubble (1999, Bernhard Franken and ABB Architekten) was the first blob ever to be built. The trade-fair pavilion has the shape of two drops of water merged with one another. A computer was used to design this special shape, and digitally controlled tools were employed to make the parts. The stability of the Opernturm (2000, Prof. Christoph Mäckler Architekten) was not only achieved in a conventional fashion through the interior core of elevators and stairwells, but instead, so as to be able to build a generous lobby, only parts of the structural core were continued through to the floor. The Carreau du Temple in Paris (2006, Studio Milou), a cast-iron market hall, is an extraordinary example of industrial architecture for this era. The modernization and conversion measures aimed at keeping the influence on the existing structure to a minimum.
