2 This project is about the design and making of benches by 28 designers from the European Union: Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, the United Kingdom, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden. novembre 2013 The benches are set on a determined path in Strasbourg. 3 ABOUT STRASBOURG Today:: - Strasbourg is host to several Art and Design schools: H.E.A.R, Haute École des Arts du Rhin, E.N.S.A.S, École Nationale Supérieure d Architecture de Strasbourg, C.E.A.A.C, Centre Européen d Action Artistique Contemporain, The University with degrees in Fine arts, Applied and visual arts, Design and Multimedia, L.I.S.A.A, L Institut Supérieur des Arts Appliqués, MJM Graphics & design, Lycée Le Corbusier and many talents from various European nations; - Strasbourg is a link between European capitals; - Host to European institutions; - Strasbourg is a pleasant place to live surrounded with beautiful architecture and historical monuments, also listed as a Unesco world heritage site; - In Strasbourg, people take time to enjoy nature through its parks, green areas, rivers, canals; - Strasbourg wants to show that Europe is part of everyday life; - Strasbourg needs events on a European scale; - Europe needs to see that Strasbourg is a booming city, proud of its riches and looking towards the future. 4 THE DESIGN PROJECT AND PURPOSE Purrpose:: - Associate modern design and Europe with the creativity, energy and quality of life in Strasbourg; - Create a synergy effect between the 28 members of the European Union ; - Promote young European artistic designers; - Enhance the city s beauty; - Attract new visitors to Strasbourg, and change their view on the city for those who already know it. THE PROJECT Have young European designers create unique benches; Organize a contest open to all 28 members of the E.U. The contest has specific requirements. A renown designer will take part in the jury; The designer, the contractor and the various departments from the city of Strasbourg will work in close collaboration to ensure the design project can be integrated in the urban landscape. 5 WHERE The benches (one selection per country) will be placed Along the European path, Starting from the Pierre Pflimlin statue (in the Parc de l Orangerie, In front of the Council of Europe, The European Court of Human Rights, On quai Ernest Bevin And in front of the European Parliament, In link with the historic place mark stones. 8 BENCH DESIGN REQUIREMENTS Each designer will have to work in close collaboration with the project management team to Validate all technical specifications linked to the location and installation of the benches. Artiistiic and techniicall requiirements STANDARDS: The benches will need to meet the NF P French standards (See attached appendix) SIIZE:: Length: maximum suggested length 200 cm, Seat depth: 64,5cm Seat height: 40,5cm MATERIIALS:: Mainly wood, but other materials used in complement are allowed. Keep in mind that some materials are less durable and require more maintenance. All materials should meet the current French standards of - Durability, - easy cleaning and maintenance, - meet environmental requirements (See appendix 1) Types of wood European species with autoclave treatment If coating is used: acrylic coating Concrete Should not disaggregate and be frost resistant, Metal Protection against corrosion required Natural stones Should be non- abrasive and frost resistant, Strasbourg Pour l Europe wwww.spe-eu.net 8

9 SEATIING SURFACE The seating surface should not allow any possible risk of injury (No sharp edges, rough surfaces, pinching, etc.) ASSEMBLY:: The following parts of the bench should be dismountable and replaceable: The seating part, the back of the bench and the arm rests (if any). The benches will either be attached or anchored to the ground so they cannot be moved. WEATHER PROTECTIION The benches need to be weatherproof MECHANIICAL CARACTERIISTIICS Robustness (See chap. 7.1 NF P standard) Stability (See chap. 7.2 NF P standard) BUDGET 5,000 (taxes included) per bench selected will be attributed to the designer for the making and transportation of his/her work. This amount includes the design, manufacturing and transportation costs of the bench, taxes and insurance fees if any. It also includes the cost of materials used and the designer s retribution. The bench should come with instructions on its positioning and ready to be installed. However, this sum does not cover the installation by the designer. Installation will be done by the city of Strasbourg with the Association SPE (project management team). SELECTION CRITERIA To enter the CONTEST, each candidate must provide: A biography, a resume, the call for entry (see call for entry document) The Jury will be composed of: Members of the Association SPE, partners and investors from the worlds of design and art CALENDAR Selectti ion crri itterri ia Meet the requirements on page 8 (Requirements to design and make a bench) The contest starts in November 2013 The preliminary project selection will be on January 5th, 2017 The jury will meet for the final selection on January 15th, 2017 The selected projects will have to be delivered by March 15th, 2017 Strasbourg Pour l Europe wwww.spe-eu.net 10

11 STRASBOURG POUR L EUROPE The association Strasbourg Pour l Europe (SPE) wants to promote and give more life to European institutions through events launched towards a larger public from Strasbourg, France, Europe SPE is a nonpolitical organization created in 1986 by leaders in the city of Strasbourg. Successive former presidents were Pierre Polak, Francis Hirn, Christophe Kieffer and Valérie Blum, since SPE is a think- tank whose goal is to promote Strasbourg as a European capital. Its members count many city officials, people from the business world, industrial world, social, political, touristic worlds, etc. SPE members meet on a regular basis to exchange ideas on Strasbourg s European dimension. Projects/events such as Strasbourg Capitale de Noël», the place of Europe, «Food culture», etc., were initiated during those meetings. SPE s goal is to launch visible and lasting actions to promote Strasbourg among European citizens so that they take part in a European future. Strasbourg l Européenne needs you now!
