3 photo: Beppe Giardino photo: Beppe Giardino Sports Club Boathouse Via Roma Torno A major part of the funding for this boathouse came from a family member of the founding father of the Sports Club in Torno, a town on Lake Como Generous as this was, it covered only two-thirds of the total construction costs Accordingly, the whole population of the village, more than half of whom are members of the sports club, decided to help by working as impromptu carpenters and technicians The commission was awarded to the young Turin-based MARC studio, who decided to build the new boathouse in a natural cove, where the ground naturally slopes down towards the lake, thereby freeing up the area used by the public which in the past had often been cluttered up by boats The building is composed of two different parts: the main body, comprising changing rooms and a storeroom, and the shed-like volume next to it, used to store the boats The materials used in the main body are waterproof and flood-resistant, as no technical systems or wires are used on the lower level photo: Beppe Giardino Public access unknown! 2006 MARC studio Associazione Sportiva Plinio Torno Daria_Ricchi 3

4 photo: Agentapple photo: Agentapple Porta Oratory Via Costa di Dentro 6614 Porta Switzerland The synthesis between traditional and modern architecture in Cavadini's first buildings was influenced by the 5-year apprenticeship he served at Luigi Snozzi s studio following his studies in Venice The buildings are characterised by roughly cut concrete cubes with large apertures, and precisely directed access paths Not only the buildings positions, but also the material from which they are built create a dialogue with the local setting This was Cavadini s breakthrough: the granite walls that are linked with concrete strips, are reminiscent of the traditional Ticinese building methods, while the rows of windows could not be more modern Cavadini turned this idea into a masterpiece with the new Oratory in Porta Half of the chequered railing out of concrete beams is infilled with granite stonework The other half serves as a portico The structure is redolent of Renaissance and of the architecture of Tadao Ando and the works by Sol LeWitt (text from 300 years of St Petersburg) photo: Agentapple Floor area/size m² Raffaele Cavadini agentapple 4

5 Villa Bianca Corso Giuseppe Garibaldi Seveso Villa Bianca in Seveso, north of Milan, is a good example of Italian Rationalism by architect The house is one of many he designed in Milan and vicinity, all of them experiments that show his research on shape, even in the face of more binding professional commissions Terragni designed Villa Bianca in 1937 and played with its composition The enclosed volume is still articulated thanks to the body projected towards the outside on the ground floor, as well as to the podium and the playful combination of protuberances in the crowning mezzanines (text from website Centro Galego de Arte Contemporánea) Public access unknown! 1937 Marloes_Faber 5

11 Asilo Sant'Elia Via Andrea Alciato Como The main entrance is protected by an ample cantilevered portico, whose function is providing shelter for the relatives waiting for the children and for the children themselves as they throng to the exit The ample, well-lit atrium is part of a larger covered space forming the recreational centre The kindergarten is to be considered a home for a large family, which has encouraged avoiding long, monotonous corridors Hence, the principal rooms, classrooms, refectory and offices are located around this atrium-recreational centre that lies at the heart of the building In summer time, the glass wall separating the two recreational zones may be folded back to create one single, easily supervised area A large ramp leads to the solarium located above the portico and is decorated with a hanging garden This feature has a highly useful function of offering protection from the excesses of temperature and climate for the underlying rooms 1937 Marloes_Faber You can visit the building but you have to make an appointment in advance Send an to the tourist information at least 2 months before heading to the Asilo 11

14 Casa Bianchi Via Fomeggie 6 Riva San Vitale Switzerland This single-family house is located at the foot of the San Giorgio mountain, on the banks of Lake Lugano The house establishes a dialectic play with the environment, emphasized by its minimal occupation of the site and by the thin metal bridge that establishes the physical relationship between the house and the mountain The 'tower', virtually defined by four corner piers and carved with geometric cuts through which the light penetrates, is organized along the vertical axis in a succession of different architectural situations and rhythms The spatial interpenetration between interior and exterior thus gives shape to a 'filter zone', terraces within the perimeter in its functional organization: the upper part holds the entrance atrium, a study, and the stairs leading to the lower floors, where the parents' room is located These levels are partially open and in communication with the living and dining area below, while the services are placed in the basement Project is not public! 16 Centro Sportivo Nationale Via Brere 6598 Tenero-Contra Switzerland The main building for sport and gymnastic facilities, is characterised on its south front by an generous portico which offers a shaded place of transition between the outdoor and indoor services The administration and hostel building has a semicircular shape, completely closed on the street front (functioning like a noise protection wall), while the south façade with the loggias is turned towards the lake Two main volume composes the site: the principle building (with the gymnastic hall provided with all sports facilities as well as a refectory) is structured by a row of 10 linear 760 m wide units creating a large portico of 11 m height The inner space offers an appropriate flexibility of organization according to the requested use Skylights inserted in the vaulted roof allow a bright daylight within the inner spaces The reinforced concrete bearing structure is clad with red bricks like the smaller semicircle building which houses lodging and administration Floor area/size m² Swiss Confederation jpmm from the freeway Bellinzona-Locarno take the exit Tenero, at the end of the exit you see the building in front of you 16

17 Central Bus Terminal Via Corso Enrico Pestalozzi 6900 Lugano Switzerland The platform roof for the new central bus terminal of the public urban transports is located on the city square of the Piazzale Ex-Scuole, and has a front line of 70 meters along Corso Pestalozzi, and a side depth of 18 meters The project is composed of a central, 7 meter high nave with two 5 meter high side aisles, formed by two opposed structures, which create a new urban space, offering a protection platform roof for the Bus stop and on the south front, the connection with the parking lot for cars, bikes and scooters The bearing structure is made of a steel frame with a double beam - supported by only 4 columns - jerking as a roof on each fronts at both the heights of 5 and 7 meters The structure is covered with a translucent material (plexiglas) and offers an opaque surface allowing a filtered light The given effect of the translucent surface characterizes the whole spot of this central bus station, whether offering wide, bright and weather protected spaces Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Passera Pedretti & Partners City of Lugano jpmm From the Stazione FFS take the bus to Autosilo Bale Car from the E35, exit 50, Lugano-Sud, roundabout 2nd exit, roundabout 1st exit, Viale Giuseppe Cattori, left Riva Paradiso along the lake, 2,5 km left Via Degli Albrizzi, 300 m the Via Corso Pestalozzi 17

18 photo: Andrea Martiradonna photo: Andrea Martiradonna Building Azzate Via Piave Azzate photo: Leo Torri The site for this scheme lies in an open landscape that is visible from a local countryside environmental route and has a strong relationship with a hilly wooded area behind it The new Azzate housing development on via Piave has been carefully studied in terms of form and volume to create the best possible views, using geometries and perspective axes that enable it to be successfully integrated into its green surroundings In terms of composition, the approach chosen combines traditional elements such as the double-pitched roof with an irregular pattern of openings on the facades The two main blocks, with asymmetric pitched roofs in sheet aluminium, are on two storeys (the second houses duplex units only), differentiated by the colours and cladding materials used for the lower ground storey, as well as by the use of different street elevations, dictated by the differing orientation and optimal control of solar factors Project is not public!
