1 DISCOVER EL PASO S Discovergram An organization founded to educate the public on the history, culture and heritage of the area WEBSITE: Volume 19, Issue 7 July 2018 Greetings Members, We had a great turn out at the June meeting at the Wyndham. It was wonderful to see all of the members, dressed in red, white, and blue, who attended to support our military. I would like to thank Mary Jo Melby and Jay Duncan for providing us information about The International Museum. I would also like to send out a special thank you to the talented Andrea Mendoza for singing a stunning rendition to The Star Spangled Banner. Honoring the military was OUR HONOR!! We are looking forward to seeing our dear friend, Doug Pullen, and hear about the upcoming film festival at the Plaza Theatre at our July meeting. Grab a friend or invite a neighbor to join us. It is more fun when we are surrounded by a lot of friends. Read the bulletin and find out about the Tea Party Fundraiser which will be held on Sunday, July 27. Only thirty tickets will be sold. Call Darci or Jennie to buy your ticket. This will benefit our Grants and Awards in September. Have a great day!! Stay cool!! 2 Discovergram July of 5 Our Program Our program for July will be presented by Doug Pullen, who will speak to us about the Plaza Classic Film Festival. Doug grew up in El Paso and graduated from Eastwood in He received a Bachelor s degree in Journalism from Texas Tech in He worked as an entertainment journalist and as a syndicated music critic for nearly 30 years. He returned to El Paso in 2008 and shortly thereafter, was hired by the El Paso Community Foundation as Program Director. The festival was an exciting welcome back when he returned to El Paso after being away for 25 years. Now approaching its 11 th year, the Plaza Classic Film Festival continues to be a favorite summer event for movie goers of all generations. Last year more than 40,000 people attended the festival and an average of 15 percent of attendees came from out of town. Two thirds of the 95 movies in this year s lineup will have some sort of connection to the region, either through the actors, scripts, plots, or references in the dialogue. The list includes Glory Road, The Border, Amadeus, No Country for Old Men, and The Getway, which will be accompanied by celebrity guest Ali MacGraw. This year s theme is a subtle way of nudging people in Hollywood, reminding them that there s a lot of potential out here. quoted Pullen. This year s festival runs from August Passes and individual tickets can be purchased at PlazaClassic.com. 3 Discovergram July of 5 Socks for Soldiers~ Thank you for donating socks for soldiers and for wearing your red/white/and blue to show your appreciation for those who serve our country. We had three soldiers who were able to attend our meeting. They were very grateful for all of the socks which were donated. One of the woman said before she left To a soldier one of the most important parts of the body are..feet. Blister and trench foot are common problems for soldiers. We wipe our feet with baby wipes, throw on some powder and clean socks and I m ready. Member Corner ~ Getting to Know Judy Boudreaux Judy (Broussard) Boudreaux was born April 27, 1944 in Gum Cove, Louisiana. She was the second of five daughters. The family moved to Sulphur, LA in 1946 when the family home burned down. Judy spent a lot of time outdoors as a child. After high school, Judy went to Business College. She had many different interesting careers which included working at the Chamber of Commerce and Lake Charles Port Authority. She moved to New Orleans to work for a major law firm and then to Houston to work at The First City National Bank. She met and married Gary while he was in dental school. They moved to El Paso in 1973 for Gary s dental practice. She became an Administrative Assistant to the President and CEO of the State National Bank s Holding Company. She later worked at Monte Vista as the Move-in-Coordinator and loved working with the senior community. One of Judy s great accomplishments was earning a pilot s license in For many years, she has made and sold beaded jewelry, often donating pieces for fund raisers. Judy had her one and only child at the age of 40. Her son Michael and his wife Emily (best daughter in-law in the world) live in the Austin area. When Michael was growing up, Judy was active on PTA Boards. Now retired, Judy has a daily exercise routine and works out five times a week. She enjoys seeing her much loved friends at the gym. She also belongs to several organizations. She is a member of P.E.O, Chapter AJ and is on the boards of the UTEP Woman s Auxiliary and Discover El Paso.
4 Discovergram July of 5 A Bit of History ~ Continuing on with the history of the now International Museum of Art, the building was once the residence of State Senator William Ward Turney and his wife Ida. They were prominent El Paso citizens who were credited with adding to the growth of El Paso. Designed by noted architect Henry C. Trost, their home was built in 1909, with architects James T. Hewitt and H. T. Ponsford. A two- story Greek Revival style, fronted by two story columns with Corinthian capitals, the house was the scene of many civic and social events from 1909 until As stated in last month s column, the acquisition of the Kress s 57-piece 12 th to 18 th century collection of European art required the city to remodel the Turney home and add two large wings in The Kress collection was hung in May, The El Paso Museum of Art continued in this location until 1998 when the Museum was moved to its current location in the remodeled Greyhound building downtown. The El Paso Art Museum Association, the group of volunteers who oversaw operations and funded purchases for the El Paso Museum of Art, proposed that the building remain a museum under its operation, separate from the city s art museum, but still open to all. The city of El Paso agreed to lease the building to the El Paso Art Museum Association, which changed its name to the International Association for the Visual Arts. Initially, the Turney house stood empty. The El Paso Museum of Art had moved all its collections to the new location. The International Association for the Visual Arts, under the leadership of George McBride, Burton Patterson, Katherine Kitty Kistenmacher, Tony Conde, Deanne Miller and others, quickly filled the giant building with art and artifacts from all over the world. Today, the International Association for the Visual Arts continues to operate the International Museum of Art. The Museum houses collections from all over the worlds and is free and open to all still honoring the wishes of the Senator and his wife that the house always be used for the arts.
