1 NOTES ON THE SAMPLE PAGES These pages are GUIDELINES only. Every church will have its own problems and so St Anne is a fictitious church. The examples have been culled and adapted from various Records in order to present a sample of good practice and as an aid for the layout and presentation of a NADFAS Record. Any discrepancies which may occur, for example between the lists of names on the Roll of Honour and the War Memorial, or with the references, arise from the eclectic nature of the source material. The text has been produced using the NADFAS Styleguide which ensures uniformity of appearance in all our Records. If use of the Styleguide is not possible for typing up a Record, we ask you to follow the example of these pages as closely as possible. This not only keeps the appearance of our Records consistent but is an aid to any researcher who may need to refer to more than one Record. Please note that the indentation of the inscription in 9 is entirely optional. The inscriptions in the Miscellaneous Section are given as an example of not indenting. Whichever option you choose please be consistent throughout the whole Record. Numbering of pages is desirable but also optional. It can be done for both text and photograph pages or just the text. The format employed here is the preferred one for this option. In the Windows Section there is an example of another optional feature - a footer on each page of text giving an explanation of the 1-10 format. For reasons of economy these pages have been produced in double-sided format. Please note that a completed Record MUST NOT CONTAIN DOUBLE-SIDED PAGES. This is because the wide left hand margin needs to be on the inside edge on every page to allow for binding without obscuring text. In this document the text has not always been justified on the right hand side, however this should be done in a Record. Hyphenated words at the end of lines as used in this document should not appear in a Record. As stated in the Introduction, the terminology in these pages is mostly taken from Inside Churches and Recording a Church: an illustrated glossary (both listed in the Handbook bibliography). It is strongly recommended that Recorders purchase a copy of Inside Churches which can be ordered from NADFAS Enterprises Ltd by calling It costs incl p&p. Recording a Church is a valuable supplement to Inside Churches. It is a Council for British Archaeology publication (ISBN ) and can be obtained from booksellers or direct from Central Books. Supplementary pages to help with your Recording can be easily downloaded from the members area of the NADFAS website notes updated June 2016

2 The National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies RECORD OF CHURCH FURNISHINGS ST ANNE DOWNINGHAM MERCIA

3 in the diocese of Mercia The NADFAS Record of Church Furnishings 2007 by the Downingham Group; commenced in 2004 during the incumbency of the Reverend Edmund Marshall. Evidence of a Saxon church on the site of the present church can be seen in the north wall of the Nave and Chancel. The recorded history of the church begins in the 12th century when the Lord of the Manor, Richard de Redver, of Mercia, presented the Manor of Downingham to the Abbey of St Mary de Montebourg, Normandy. A contingent of French monks established a Priory and the ownership subsequently passed backwards and forwards between France and England. In 1399 Richard II presented Downingham Priory to the Carthusian Monastery of St Anne at Coventry. Following the dissolution in 1539, Downingham Priory was given to a supporter of Henry VIII. During the 17th and 18th centuries much of the interior was changed and it became more of a preaching house. By the end of the 19th century the church had fallen into disrepair. Restoration took place in Under the Town and Country Planning Act of 1947, the church was included in the list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest. Today it is much loved and well cared for by the parishioners of Downingham. This Record has been sponsored by the Downingham Decorative & Fine Arts Society. [A little more history may be written, but please do not go on to a second page, remember to include all sponsors of the Record.] introduction, page 1
