CriticalMass started in It was the idea of a handful of graduate students wishing to share thesis project work with other graduate schools of architecture from the Southeast Region. At that time, the students were interested in the idea of place and region, and the event sought to bring diverse projects from different institutions together so that the students could share, and perhaps understand, what commonalities might be present in their final project work. The students themselves identified and invited international and national architects and critics to discuss the work and to give an evening presentation. These critics have varied over the past ten years, from those interested in regionalism to those that were launching practices on a more global scale. In all cases, the critics invited reflected the students interests and the work they had been exposed to in the School of Architecture curriculum. Welcome From the efforts of that first handful of students, CriticalMASS has fostered a tradition of collaboration and exploration across schools of architecture. Year after year, the event continues to inspire students to reach across institutional boundaries and come together with shared interests; no other such forum for cross-institution student interaction and learning currently exists. With coordination from a selected student committee and hard work from graduate student volunteers and faculty advisors, each Spring CriticalMASS hosts a series of presentations and discussions from selected students and Distinguished Guests. Each project that is presented responds to a unifying theme, but explores architectural ideas and issues independently through the lenses of technical methods, urban design, and theory. The yearly success of CriticalMASS is a result of the effort and dedication provided from the current, first-year graduate class and continued support of the students, faculty, and local practitioners. Together we organize and integrate a unique outlet for student work that has become a respected part of the UNC Charlotte School of Architecture and a joint identity of current graduate students. We hope you will join us on our tenth anniversary of this event!

As a former participant of CriticalMASS and a current architectural educator, I commend the UNC Charlotte Architecture Department on its tenacity and determination to develop a generation of critical architects. The student involvement in this program is, by far, the most important element, so much so that I sought out the leadership of the program as soon as I joined an architecture faculty and have used the program as an example to my own students. The spirit of the program to connect regional and national schools in a greater discussion of contemporary issues in architecture as a basis for discussion and learning fills a great need in architectural education. I am very much looking forward to this upcoming session as the topic of social consciousness has become as significant in critical discussion as tectonics or sustainability. My participation as a graduate student was absolutely invaluable to my overall experience in architecture. The experience underscored my firm belief in the collaborative nature of design, provided much needed and desired critique from a wider pool, and reaffirmed the fire of a spirit of camaraderie in the pursuit of excellent architecture. Beyond the mind-blowing opportunity to meet and be reviewed by an architectural hero in Glenn Murcutt, the enthusiasm of the participants and students was simply amazing. This UNC Charlotte group is definitely onto something amazing. Testimonials Julie Granacher Professor of Architecture Savannah College of Art and Design As an international student from China, UNC Charlotte s CriticalMASS 2005 remains an unforgettable experience for me. During the two-day event I met renowned architects and a group of excellent students from various universities. The project I presented was a final draft of my thesis book, but the critiques I received from the honored guests and colleagues at UNC Charlotte inspired me to push my thesis another step forward. After the revision I received the 2005 Best Thesis Award at Virginia Tech. CriticalMASS gave me valuable exposure to a wide range of critics beyond my regular graduate education, and the experience has even proved beneficial to my later studies at Harvard University and to my current practice in China. I highly recommend the upcoming CriticalMASS Qiuda Lin Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design Harvard University Graduate School of Design linkstudio

He has served on the Board of Directors of several nonprofit institutions. TESTIMONIALS...La Dallman s work is not merely painterly. Neither idolizing technology or subsuming it behind other interests, these architects integrate technology into the complete architectural project. They understand the structure and construction are key aspects of our environment, realities contributing to a sustainable world. -Raymund Ryan, Curator, Heinz Architectural Center, Carnegie Museum of Art The bus shelter is everyone s favorite little project. Clearly a labor of love, it s one of those powerhouse projects that has both macro urban effect and micro architectural detail... -American Institute of Architects Wisconsin 2005 Design Awards Jury (Anne Gatling Haynes, AIA, New Haven; Tom Kundig, FAIA, Seattle; and Mark Schendel, AIA, Chicago) [The Frederick Miller Employee Meeting Center] is a mature, skilled project... designed for the long haul; it is very classic and very contemporary... The project could be in many places like SoHo, Houston and other cities where you feel that you are part of the world stage and of the now. -American Institute of Architects Wisconsin 2005 Design Awards Jury (Anne Gatling Haynes, AIA, New Haven; Tom Kundig, FAIA, Seattle; and Mark Schendel, AIA, Chicago)

Grace La and James Dallman... are considered rising stars... They understand the hidden connections among landscape, history and design. -The Atlanta Journal-Constitution [Grace La] is off-the-charts smart with an electric personality and boundless energy-- the person people draft first when they pick teams. -The Business Journal, 40 under 40 One of the hottest [practices] is LA DALLMAN...[who] have garnered so much favorable attention for their cutting-edge, urbane proposals... -The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel...the work of a couple fairly new to the city, Grace La and James Dallman, has broadened the discourse and opened a few eyes. -Architectural Record The outdoor theatre space is really compelling, and the pedestrian walkway is designed with detail and thoughtfulness... This project [the Marsupial Bridge and Urban Spaces] asks us to look at urban infrastructure as interesting parts of our urban situation. -American Institute of Architects Wisconsin 2006 Design Awards Jury (Jennifer Yoos, Minneapolis; Neal Jones, Phoenix; Josh Skelton, Kansas City) There is a lot of care, spirit, and good detailing in [LA DALLMAN s Open Air Classroom]. -American Institute of Architects Wisconsin 2006 Design Awards Jury (Jennifer Yoos, Minneapolis; Neal Jones, Phoenix; Josh Skelton, Kansas City) Trolls, begone: La Dallman Architects converted this unsafe area beneath a bridge near Milwaukee s Holton St. Viaduct into a welcoming and well-lit neighborhood gathering space... -Azure, Canada 2011 Distinguished Guests Grace addresses problem by hitting the books. Constantly searching for knowledge allows her to really absorb the basics of her field. A willingness to collaborate is also an incredible source of strength. -MKE, Girl Power: 7 Wonder Women who are doing heroic work in Milwaukee Like rock n roll, [La Dallman s Kilbourn Tower is] a progression of simple chords. Small changes make a big difference. When done right, Modernism rocks... Kilbourn Tower has one of the most generous and transparently luminous pedestrian passages in Milwaukee... -Milwaukee Magazine A high level of rigor and thought went into the design of this project [the Great Lakes Future]. The detailing is exquisite. The architect captured the full body of the exhibit space. -American Institute of Architects Wisconsin 2008 Design Awards Jury (Ronnette Riley, FAIA, New York; Kenneth Luker, AIA, North Carolina; and Paul Mankins, FAIA, Iowa) La Dallman brings a really fresh view of what an exhibit can be, as well as the best practices of what s happening in architecture. Plus, I get a philosophical perspective and a sense of beauty that is unique to their practice. -Paul Krajniak, Discovery World, UWM Today. [La Dallman has] combined the high-tech process of GIS data-driven design with a deliberate attempt to lend it a tactile, furniture-like sensibility. -Shepherd Express...Skycar City is a brilliant conceit. It is choreographed by Winy Maas of MVRDV and Grace La of the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee... -The Architectural Review, London

[The Levy House] is a light-filled space whose 40-foot-long rear glass wall perches over a leafy ravine, bringing the outside in...they are living in a work of art as beguiling as anything in their collection. -Milwaukee Home La Dallman offers a counter-strategy to architecture s often complicit role in the increasing privatization of the public realm... La Dallman was able to reclaim easements ceded to infrastructure. -Praxis Journal of Building and Writing In large part thanks to the concrete structural design, the Ravine House has the feeling of a tree house which is perfectly appropriate for the setting. The structural design complements and supports the architectural intent in this manner. -Structural Engineers Association of Illinois, SEAOI Excellence in Structural Engineering Award AWARDS 2011 Distinguished Guests 2010 Providence River Pedestrian Bridge Competition Finalist Mayor s Urban Design Award Milwaukee, Wisconsin Hillel Student Center, Joseph & Vera Zilber Building Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute 2010 Design Award - Residential Buildings Levy House 2009 SEAOI 2009 Best Small Structural Project Award Structural Engineers Association of Illinois Levy House Faculty Design Award Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Levy House 2008 Gold Medal and Best of Competition Milwaukee Home Magazine Design Levy House Merit Award for design excellence AIA, Wisconsin Great Lakes Future, Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin Merit Award for design excellence AIA, Wisconsin Levy House Faculty Design Award Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Great Lakes Future, Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin 2007 Second Place Allegheny Square Competition - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania National Invitational Competition for the Redesign of Public Space LA DALLMAN in collaboration with StossLU and ARUP Bruner Award for Urban Excellence Silver Medal Crossroads Project: Brady St Bus Shelter, Marsupial Bridge and Urban Spaces Faculty Design Award Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Marsupial Pedestrian Bridge and Urban Plaza Finalist Chazen Museum of Art Competition - Madison, Wisconsin Competition for the expansion of the Chazen Museum of Art LA DALLMAN in collaboration with the Office of Peter Rose 2006 Engineering Achievement Award American Society of Civil Engineers, Wisconsin Marsupial Bridge 2nd Prize among 109 submissions West End Pedestrian Bridge Competition - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania International Competition Honor Award for Design Excellence AIA, Wisconsin Marsupial Pedestrian Bridge and Urban Plaza Merit Award for Design Excellence AIA, Wisconsin Open-air Classroom, Milwaukee Montessori School 2005 Finalist Andrew Young Plaza Design Competition - Atlanta, Georgia International Design Competition for Ambassador Andrew Young Plaza LA DALLMAN in collaboration with StossLU Mayor s Urban Design Award Milwaukee, Wisconsin Marsupial Bridge Honor Award for Design Excellence AIA, Wisconsin Frederick J. 12 Michael Niezer Clemson University Salvage. Design. Construct. Repeat. This project is a pedagogical model for design/build service-learning studies. An information kiosk and a temporary movie screen were designed and built for the Bluesphere Expo, whose themes were art and environmentalism. Bluesphere sought to bring sustainability education to area residents through a collection of visual arts exhibitions, lectures, films and activities on the environment and conservation. The reuse of salvaged materials and a limited budget played an important role in the design process. Student Featured Projects Ian Reeves Georgia Tech Learning Environments The design and construction of American public high schools are forcibly influenced by ultra-cost effective techniques demanding simplicity in construction and durability of material. The inflexibility and banality of the architecture this Proposed Plan - Therrell High School,of Atlanta Public School System paradigm typically delivers begs for exploration ofsitethe feasibility innovative construction technologies. Building off the existing (proposed) program, which includes three, 400 student schools a methodology will be engaged to identify and analyze the feasibility of a computer aided manufacturing technique that could adequately meet the demands of a high school facility and ideally expand on these demands by offering new concepts of learning environments. 1/64 = 1-0

Cyril Sherif Anyanwu Prairie View A & M University AN AFRICAN MARKET SQUARE: A case study of Igbo Planning of the Market Place uses a 12 x 12 square tessellated in a clearing within the forest. Five sub clearings are arranged within the tessellated field of squares. Each of these sub-clearings allow for in/formal gatherings supporting traditions of the IGBO. The IGBO have many cultural events, festivals, celebrations, ceremonies, rituals, contests and tradition. Most of these events are hosted at the Market Square. This is a very important forum in the IGBO social, cultural, economic and religious life. In IGBO culture, the Market Square is where exchange of tradition happens. The design of the Market Square has to harmoniously weave together the cultural and traditional aspects of the people. Student Featured Projects Stephen Martyak Savannah College of Art and Design Equitable Design: The Missing Variable in Creating Sustainable Public Housing Revitalization This thesis focuses on Building a Better Environment for the nation s most disadvantaged residents through an emphasis on equitable design or socially conscious, unbiased design that effectively engages all users, responds to their individual needs, and promotes the community-at-large. Equitable Design is the missing variable in the equation for creating sustainable public housing revitalization. Therefore, this thesis investigates equity through the architectural and urban design of public housing revitalization, taking a community from an existing distressed public housing project to a mixed-financed, mixed-income, mixed-use, compact, walkable, and environmentally responsive community.

Shari Thompson University of Louisiana Lafeyette Gradation and Mediation of Speeds in Small Downtowns Student Featured Projects Highways develop for efficiency; generally in the form of straight routes, multiple lanes, and high speeds. These roadways are insensitive to what they are passing through for the ease of the commuter. Brandon, Vermont is a small town where the main street doubles as a state highway. The life of Brandon will be decided by planned development of infrastructure, preservation of public parks and recreation, protection of existing historic fabric, and uphold the character of the walkable artisan community. Daniel Beck Virginia Tech - A House and A Workshop This is an investigation into what it means to live and to work and how those two seemingly distinct activities should order the spaces in which they take place. This project examines what it means to fully understand what is needed to live (A House) and to work (A Workshop). The question is raised about what it means to be a designer and builder and why we, as humans, have the urge to create.

Elizabeth Unruh University of North Carolina Charlotte - This is [Hospitality] Tomorrow Ritual, food and space all play important parts in the practice of hospitality, but the nature of their roles is ever changing as they respond to American culture. Architects have the unique opportunity to go beyond observation and design the manifestation of the principles of hospitality in the 21st century. It is through design that architects can suggest ways to repair the rupture that has developed from the lack of connection people have to others and to their cultural identity, thus building a better environment for American society. After completing an appraisal of hospitality at the turn of the century, the mid 20th century, and the early 21st century, six principles were distilled that appeared to influence hospitality throughout time. Those six principles were then studied and measured to determine their contemporary relevance and manifestation. The conclusions will now inform a proposal that advocates for a transformational approach to hospitality. Student Featured Projects Aleksandra Borisenko University of North Carolina Charlotte Urban design, planning philosophies and implementation strategies will have to refocus as we enter into a no-growth or low-growth economy. Due to the recession, the steady and constant urban growth and development are no longer a reality in most urban areas of the United States. The longer-term horizon development projects with steady return on investment could be a new normal. These types of projects can support a greater amount of investment in green initiatives and will have to conform to a long-term financial model. Located in Charlotte s First Ward, the location chosen for the thesis project is the test site for exploring optimum design, planning, and implementation strategies in a recession economy. The development proposal focuses on new building models and typologies that can help encourage development; a much-needed family-oriented housing in urban core and green office buildings. A site-specific form-based code that integrates new and progressive sustainability modules serves as the implementation strategy for the project.

Jeff Scott - University of North Carolina- Charlotte - Digital Feedback Ecologies: Ecological Intelligence as Responsive Design Student Featured Projects Digital feedback ecologies is a concept that combinesmaterial, information, and feedback into a parametric, software system. This process embraces unintended outcomes and the parameters are based upon underlyingecological information (in this case life-cycle data)embedded within the parametric system. The intent of this research is to let the architectural design processrespond to new forms of information, thus allowing architectsto become more accountable for the decisionsthat they make during the material selection phase of aproject.
