Secretary 義務秘書報告香港草地滾球總會二零一二年年報As the 2012/2013 season was drawn to a close, we received encouraging news from the Hong K o n g G o v e r n m e n t w h e n t h e y announced that in recognition for our International Achievements over these last 2 years, lawn bowls has been granted second level elite sport status by the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Although we are still working out the details of this Elite Vote Support System, it is certain that we will receive more support for our Hong Kong Squad. This will benefit our sport of lawn bowls as a whole. The 2012/2013 year was concluded in a satisfactory manner mainly due to the assistance from the private clubs in providing venues for the 在 2012/2013 年度屆滿之際, 香港政府宣佈了一個令人鼓舞的訊息, 為了表揚本會過去兩年在國際賽事中的卓越成就, 將草地滾球列為香港體育學院精英培訓計劃的 B 級精英項目雖然我們仍在了解精英培訓計劃的詳情, 一點可以肯定的就是我們的香港隊將會得到更多支援, 對整項運動的未來發展大有裨益本人在此感謝各屬會在 2012/2013 年慷慨提供場地, 令各項賽事及決賽日能夠順利舉行, 同時亦要感謝各位球員包容及忍耐因場地不足而要改期作賽場地短缺問題在短期內不僅未能得到解決, 更會因多項大型工程啟動而惡化, 尤其是隨著中環灣仔繞道工程的進行, 政府不單要重置維多利亞公園其中一個滾球場, 更要拆除警官俱樂部, 令兩個球場有一段長時間未能使用, 希望各位能接受現況並暫時忍耐 various competitions and final days, and the tolerance of our bowlers in rearranging their league games due to the shortage of greens. The problem of shortage of greens will get nowhere better but worse when the government has to relocate one of the Victoria Park greens and to pull down the Police Officers Club to give way to the construction of the Central- Wanchai Bypass-tunnel. I hope everybody can bear with this and to live with it for a while. I n t e r n a t i o n a l l y, i n t h e Wo r l d Champion of Champions held in Cyprus in October 2012, Stanley Lai came back with a Silver medal in the men s event out of 26 participants whereas Mercredi Yeung came 6th in the women's event out of 25 participants. In the 7th Asia Pacific Indoor Bowls Championship held in Malaysia, Vivian Yip reached the quarter-finals in the women's singles event. In the World Bowls Championships held in Adelaide, Australia, our men s team came 15th overall out of 24 countries and our women s team ranked 10th overall out of 24 countries. The women's triples team got beaten in the play-off and ranked 5th, Tammy Tham in the women's singles was edged off in the 國際賽事方面,2012 年 10 月在塞浦路斯舉行的世界冠中之冠單人錦標賽, 黎幹立在 26 名勁敵中取得銀牌佳績, 而楊秀炫亦於 25 名參賽球手中排名第 6; 在馬來西亞舉行的第七屆亞洲太平洋室內草地滾球錦標賽, 葉慧德於女單晉級八強 ; 在澳洲阿德萊德舉行的世界草地滾球錦標賽中, 香港男子隊在團體總排名 15, 而女子隊則在 24 支球隊中位列第 10, 其中女子三人隊成功晉身資格賽並獲得第 5 名, 而譚美娟在女子單人賽資格賽中僅以得失球之差無緣晉級, 總排名第 8; 至於 2013 年 4 月在澳洲舉行的世界盃室內單人錦標賽, 陳健馳亦成功晉級至總排名第 5 根據現時世界草地滾球總會的最新世界排名, 譚美娟位列 11 黎幹立則排行 12, 本人衷心祝賀他們兩位的卓越表現在青少年發展方面, 總會繼續投放大量的資源在多個項目上過 play-off by shot difference and ranked 8th overall. In the 2013 World Cup Indoor Singles held in Australia, Ken Chan ranked 5th place. Today, in the World Bowls ranking, Tammy Tham is now 11th and Stanley Lai is 12th in the world. Well done to both of them. A lot of HKLBA resources have been spent on youth development. Over the past twenty months, through the School Sports Programme, the sport has been introduced to over 3,000 students and some of them have been recruited to our Young Athletes Scheme training. In February 2013, a six-day training camp was arranged in Malaysia and those selected to attend all felt they had gained some valuable experiences and was worthwhile to participate. Finally, my sincere appreciation to all your support, contributions, sponsorships and participation. My congratulations to all the winners tonight and I wish you all an enjoyable evening. Vincent Cheung 去二十個月, 本會透過學校推廣計劃, 成功將草地滾球運動介紹予超過 3,000 名學生, 部份學生更被吸納入青苗草地滾球培訓計劃 2013 年 2 月, 青年軍到馬來西亞接受一個為期 6 日訓練營, 所有參加者事後均表示訓練營令其獲益良多, 非常值得參加最後, 本人衷心感謝各位的支持貢獻贊助及積極參與, 謹此祝賀所有得獎球員及希望大家享受這個晚上張旭峯 Dear Friends and Fellow Members, Our official 2012/2013 year began in September 2012 with our AGM and the uncontested re-election of all 2011/2012 Officers. We are very pleased to report that in line with our Association s objectives, every year we have enabled growth in our numbers of bowlers to a total now of 2494 [1672 men and 822 women] from last year s total of 2136 [1422 men and 714 women]. For our 37 member Clubs and the general public, we continued with our activities of regular league and national competitions, international events, special events, fun-days, training courses for bowlers, coaches, umpires, district promotion programmes, the Youth Development programme and the Young Athletes Training Scheme. Designed to better serve our members, our web-site remains very active, with constant improvements and updates for the competitions as well as other useful information. In the office, we continued with our 3 full-time and 1 part-time staff. They all continued to work hard to keep up with the office s heavy workload on the routine tasks and the ever changing situations on the competitions and courses. However, it is always very important that we elected officers contribute to the organization and 2012 至 2013 年度的會務在 2012 年 9 月份的香港草地滾球總會週年大會後正式展開, 所有現任委員在無競爭之下連任年內本會活躍球員的數目持續增長, 由去年的 2136 名 (1422 男及 714 女 ) 增至今年的 2494 名 (1672 男及 822 女 ), 達致本會促進草地滾球運動的目標, 成績令人欣慰為了滿足本會 37 個屬會及市民的需要, 本會繼續定期舉辦聯賽公開賽國際賽特別活動同樂日訓練課程教練及裁判培訓地區推廣計劃青少年發展計劃及青苗培訓計劃等等為更好地服務各位球員, 總會的網頁不斷改進, 以高效率更新賽事資料及上載有用資訊在總會辦事處, 我們繼續有三位全職及一位兼職員工服務大家他們每天努力不懈地處理繁重的會務應對不斷更新的賽事及培訓課程值得留意的是, 隨著會務日益繁多, 而總會的員工資源有限的情況下, 我們這一群被選出來的義務委員們, 均各盡其力 management tasks as much as possible as sometimes our staffing resources are inadequate to enable us to serve you, our members, the best we can and ensure that our Association s activities run smoothly throughout the year. We received the continued support from our much valued subvention agency the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, without whom our activities would be severely limited. We also much appreciated the generous sponsorships received from the Zhong Gang Multi-Bowls Club, Pokka Café, True Draw, NONG S, Webber Naturals, Warren Kwok and donations from youth team coaches and many other coaches and bowlers. The Filipino Club continued with their generous sponsorship for the annual Ronson Au Memorial Mixed Fours competition with the donation of all the entry fees and prize monies. On the International front we sent teams to the Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Bowls Championships in Malaysia, the World Singles Champion of Champions in Cyprus, the World Bowls in Australia and the World Cup [Indoors] in Australia. Locally we held the International Bowls Classic. It is to be noted in particular that this year our International bowling profile has been considerably raised by the achievements of our World Champion of Champions and our World Bowls 為會務作出貢獻, 以確保會內的活動和事務運作順暢我們繼續獲得資助機構康樂及文化事務署撥款, 沒有他們的資助, 本會的活動必然受到嚴重限制在此, 我們亦要感謝各界的支持及贊助, 其中包括中港擲球俱樂部百佳 ( 香港 ) 有限公司 True Draw 農本方, 維柏健, 郭新煒先生香港青少年隊的教練們, 以及其他教練及球員的捐款菲律賓會亦再次將一年一度的 Ronson Au 混合四人賽的賽事報名費及獎金全部捐贈予總會在國際賽事方面, 我們派隊參加了在馬來西亞舉行的亞洲太平洋室內草地滾球錦標賽在塞浦路斯舉行的世界冠中之冠單人錦標賽在澳洲舉行的世界賽及世界盃室內單人錦標賽而本地國際賽事方面, 我們舉辦了香港國際草地滾球精英賽值得一提的是, 港隊在世界冠中之冠單人賽及世界草地滾球錦標賽女子三人賽的卓越成就, 提高了我們在國際草地滾球壇的地位, 特別是部份新隊員更是初次 women s triples teams. These teams were fielded by newcomers making their debut and relative newcomers in our Hong Kong Squad. In addition, Stanley Lai s World Champion of Champions [Singles] performance earned him a World Bowls Singles ranking of 12th place, whilst Tammy T h a m s Wo r l d B o w l s s i n g l e s achievement brought her previous ranking from 16th to the 9th position. Sending our teams to these events entails a lot of work by our Association and our appreciation and thanks go to all those who have helped us, especially as team managers, with the arrangements. We also very much appreciated the contribution made by all our volunteer helpers, markers and umpires at our local events. Please all remember that we welcome any assistance from you, all our members, at any time. A l l i n a l l, w e, t h e E x e c u t i v e Committee have again had a very busy and productive year. 4 Hong Kong International Bowls Classic 2012 香港草地滾球總會二零一二年年報The 2012 Classic returned to its regular single gender singles and pairs format, after making way for the HKLBA Golden Jubilee Classic mixed pairs special edition the previous year. The Singles took place at Kowloon Bowling Green Club, Club de Recreio and United Services Recreation Club on 3rd and 4th November, with the finals being held at KBGC. The Pairs was a 7-day competition scattered between Craigengower Cricket Club, Hong Kong Football Club and Indian Recreation Club, with the finals played at CCC on 11th November. For the first time in the history of lawn bowling in Hong Kong, every final match was broadcast live on nowtv and on the Internet. In only the second all-nation Men s Singles Final in the 30-year history of the Classic, Australian Barrie Lester defeated compatriot Matthew Baus to clinch the title at KBGC on Sunday 4th November in front of more than 500 spectators and many more nowtv viewers. Lester, a 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, started the tournament in high spirits, defeating two local players before comfortably dispatching Scottish international Robert Marshall in the third round. He then moved on to beat two Asian bowlers, Ruptu Gogoi from India and Hommer Mercado from the Philippines to enter the Final. Meanwhile, Baus faced an easier route in the competition, dispatching four local players before facing his first real challenge in the Semi-finals against Scottish international Iain McLean. It was a tight affair and Baus needed a tie-break to win the game. I n t h e F i n a l, b o t h Australians were really relaxed displaying the highest level of skills, with the crowd enjoying a close contest. Lester took the first set 9:6; while Baus aggressive play gained him the second set 9:8. In the tie-breaker, Lester displayed nerves of steel and the highest level of concentration to trail the jack to get shot and finish 3:1 ahead t o w i n t h e Men s Singles title. T h e b e s t o f t h e local Men s Singles performance came in Raymond Ho, Hong K o n g s r e i g n i n g B o w l e r o f t h e Year, who reached the Quarter-finals before he went down to the Philippine s Hommer Mercado. Hong Kong international Camilla Leung made history by becoming the first local woman to enter the Final of the Women s Classic Singles, only to be overshadowed by Sandy Hazell, who became the first English woman to win the Singles title in the Hong Kong Classic. Hazell knocked out four local lady bowlers, including Irene Chow of Hong Kong in the Quarter-finals, before beating Sonia Bruce from the Philippines to enter the Final. Meanwhile, Leung had knocked out the defending champion, Nor Hashimah Ismail from Malaysia, in Round 2 and Anna Chan, former Hong Kong Women s Bowler of the Year, in the Semis, en route to facing the former World Indoor Singles Champion in the Final. In the opening set, Leung was on top until the last end, when she was leading 7:4. Despite drawing a shot close to the jack, her other two shots were far off the head. Seven days after dominating in the Singles, Lester and Baus combined to win their second Classic title for Australia, after a marathon Men s Pairs Final with Irishmen Graham McKee and Mark McPeak. The Australians took the first set 10:5. In the second set it was an even tighter scenario when the jack went out of bounds eight times. The Irish once opened up a lead of 7:2 but in the sixth end lost five after McKee missed all four driving shots. This was only the second time that Wales has flown their flag in the Hong Kong Classic and their first time claiming a women s title. After a hard day on the green we were blessed with a day off and a chance to get out and about and enjoy the Hong Kong lifestyle.

The men s champion was KBGC (S.K. Chow, Ken Chan, Stephen K.M. Chan, Joseph Chu and David H.K. Ng), and the Women s champion was HKFC (Terri Tsang, Lydia Yang, Anne Gately and Emmie Wong). 香港草地滾球總會二零一二年年報The new Victorian Open Women s Singles Champion describes highs and lows of different kinds during her trip to take part in the Hong Kong International Classic A month after my Malaysian stint, I was lucky enough to be boarding another plane at the international terminal, this time bound for Hong Kong. Paired up with Anne Johns and alongside our male representatives of Barrie Lester and Matthew Baus, we were in for a trip of a lifetime. The fellas well and truly stole the show over in Hong Kong. A two-day knockout singles tournament before the big pairs event started came down to Lester and Baus fighting it out against each other in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. In true Aussie spirit the boys took it right down to the line in a tie-breaker. Lester managed to turn the tables by trailing the jack with his last bowl to take out the Gold and leave Baus with the Silver. There was no time for rest or too many celebratory drinks with the next day heralding the beginning of the pairs tournament. The men s and women s fields were both divided into two sections with the top three to play finals after 11 rounds of play. With a high-class field of international bowlers, past winners and the best of the local talent, those three spots were to be fiercely contested. After a hard day on the green we were blessed with a day off and a chance to get out and about and enjoy the Hong Kong lifestyle. Top marks for their amazing public transport system, friendly citizens and clean streets. Being the daredevils we are, we decided to spend the day at a massive theme park. The boys chickened out on the last rollercoaster claiming they didn t want to risk injury. Chickens!!!! You can t go to Hong Kong without visiting Happy Valley Racecourse, so that s were we spent our evening and that s where my wallet got rather empty while everyone else s got rather full. The next day it was back to the important stuff. With five games to go the boys were in third position, but Anne and I were in seventh with some serious work to do unless we wanted our trip to end early. Heads downs and bums up we managed to knock off the Irish, English and Malaysian women with full points to hurtle us up into the top three just in time. The knockout rounds had begun and all the action came down to the semi-finals on Saturday night with a massive crowd that filled the grandstand, surrounded the green and even filled up the balcony of the club. Unfortunately this was the end of the road for us; the Welsh ladies were just too good and would go on to win the final the next day. The same fate nearly befell the boys against Scotland. In the tie-breaker Lester was determined to kill as many ends as he had to until they could get the three they needed and that s exactly what eventuated on the third attempt at the end. This lined them up for a finals showdown against the Irish entourage who had remained undefeated during the entire tournament. It became a game of laughs for the crowd every time Lester lined up for a drive. After four dead ends in the first set and eight in the second we can be sure that next year the respot rule will be a new addition to the tournament. The length of the game was quickly forgotten when they finally got to the last end and our boys took out the win. It was a massive effort by the Aussie boys bringing home the top honours on foreign soil. Now for my tip to anyone who considers heading over to Hong Kong for a bowling holiday: It s an amazing place to go with beautiful people and endless attractions to keep you occupied away form the green. But make sure you do some pre-holiday weight training because those 11-second greens require some muscle power if you want to be anything but three yards short each end. Report on 7 th Asia Pacific Indoor Bowls Championship 2012 This annual event was held from 1 to 6 October 2012 and was hosted by the Malaysia Lawn Bowls Federation at the Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium, Klang, Selangor, Malaysia. The competition venue contained an 8 -rink covered bowls green. The Hong Kong Team comprised our Indoor Championship winners, these being Tony Cheung, Walter Kwok, Vivian Yip and Queenie Lai, with Team Manager Warren Kwok. There were 14 participating countries - Australia, Brunei, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macau, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Malaysia. Their combined performance was the best-ever from Hong Kong players in this prestigious event that was held for the first time on Cyprus, the island of Aphrodite, in the Mediterranean Sea. When I arrived in Hong Kong for the Classic a week later, a respected s e n i o r f i g u r e t o l d m e, r a t h e r apologetically, We don t seem to have the big names that we used to have, but the overall standard in Hong Kong is probably higher these days. Could it be that the emergence of Lai and Yeung and the achievement of the five local players who qualified for the quarter finals of the women s Classic singles this year may signal a revival, and herald a new dawn, when Hong Kong thrust new big names on the world of bowls? But, how did Lai and Yeung do it? What did they think of Cyprus? And what were the highlights of the World Bowls Champion of Champions? 報Briefly, Lai started well, winning his first three matches, and losing only three out of twelve in his round When Jones won, Yeung knew that robin campaign. He qualified for the victory over Jersey s Suzie Dingle knockout stage in third place in his would see her overtake Steyn, and DAVID RHYS JONES group table behind Kiwi Peter Hodson redoubled her efforts. 11 and young Scot Mark Kelsey, both of whom he beat. In the quarter finals, the KBGC star chalked up an impressive 9-5, 10-4 win over former Middlesex cricketer Keith Jones, then outclassed Hodson, 12-3, 7-7, to clinch a place in the final, where he met Malaysia s rising star Hizlee Abdul Rais. It was fascinating to see two such methodical players come face to face. Lai and Rais showed qualities of patience and determination, and, if there was a lack of fireworks, there was certainly no lack of consistency. A close first set ended when the 23-year-old Malaysian, who has taken Safuan Said s singles berth in the national side, scored a full house on the last end, and the second set was a dour affair, with Rais just coming out on top to record a 13-6, 7-5 victory. By contrast, Yeung was slow to start her campaign, and made what seemed to be a disastrous start, losing her first four matches but there was only one way to go after that, and she told me afterwards that she was not downhearted! It was a daunting draw, as Yeung gave best to South Africa s Esme Steyn, three-times Welsh champion Caroline Taylor, Zimbabwe s Jane Rigby and Malaysia s Emma Firyana Saroji I knew I had played the better players in the group, so I kept at it, and won my next eight matches, revealed Yeung. My last game started late, and I was able to keep an eye on what was happening in the game where Esme (Steyn) was playing the Norfolk Islander Petal Jones. Yeung also revealed that, after losing those first four games in her preferred red shirt, she looked over at how Lai was doing so well in his blue shirt, and decided to change her colours. The blue shirt, with its dragon emblazoned across it, may not be universally popular in Hong Kong, but it served Yeung well as she powered her way into the knockout stage though that was where her challenge ends, with a defeat at the hands of Malta s Carmen Spiteri. B e l i e v e i t o r n o t, t h e M a l t e s e championship is played in Australia, where there are hundreds, if not thousands of bowlers who hold Maltese passports! Spiteri is a spirited opponent, but Yeung outscored her, and was unlucky to lose on a tiebreak, 8-5, 2-9, 3-1. Lai and Yeung agreed that Cyprus was a great venue for the Classic, the climate being very similar to that in Hong Kong, and the Athena Beach Hotel, where the event was staged, met with the Hong Kong players approval. It was a well-organised event, and everyone was very friendly, said Lai. Even the artificial greens, which surprised a lot of the competitors who are accustomed to playing on grass, were quite similar to some of our greens in Hong Kong, he added. The next Champion of Champions will be staged in Christchurch, where many bowls clubs have closed following last year s tragic earthquake. Lai and Yeung, who thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Cyprus, will be envious of Hong Kong s 2013 representatives, but wish them well for a successful campaign.

Perhaps the tide has turned, and there are new stars emerging! A Hong Kong bowler provided me with one of my fondest memories of the event, when Robin Chok delivered a magical last bowl to dispatch the World Bowls Tour number one Paul Foster, taking out the Scot s shot, and trailing the jack for a match-winning count of four shots. Foster is too young to remember it, but, in 1980, Robin s dad Philip Chok starred in the second manifestation of the world indoor singles championship at the Coatbridge club in Scotland, where he reached the final before being toppled by the world s greatest-ever bowler, David Bryant. Robin won four of his first five games, but lost four in a row, before It was left to the Hong Kong women to hit the heights, and they did so notably in the triples, where Tammy Tham, Jessie So and Alice Lee performed brilliantly to finish second in their group, and qualified for the knockout stage. They just could not go wrong, as they strung together nine wins on the trot, and it was significant that their first two wins were against world-class opposition in Malaysia and New Zealand, and 14-12, respectively. Sitting pretty at the top of the table for the first four days, they fell from grace in their last two group games but there was no disgrace in giving best to England and Australia! New Zealand were delighted to gain revenge for that early defeat by beating Hong Kong, 16-6, in the first knockout phase (a stage that the WBL call the post-sectional play-off, but that I insist on calling the quarter finals). Tammy Tham did Hong Kong proud in the women s singles, In the process, it must be said, Tammy did some damage, bringing the high-flying Melmore down to earth - as well as beating the hotlytipped Scot Claire Johnston and the young Malaysian, Emma Firyania Binti Saroji. In the pairs, Joanna Nam and Camilla Leung finished seventh in the group after winning five of their eleven matches, while, after the inspirational success of the Hong Kong trio, it was surprising to see Alice Lee, Jessie So, Joanna Nam and Camilla Leung struggle to take tenth place in the fours. The 5 centres are located in Causeway Bay, Ap Lei Chau, Shatin, Tseung Kwan O and Tuen Mun bowling greens. There were a total of 37 and 45 participants for Phase 1 and Phase 2 respectively in 2012/2013. After the completion of this year s scheme, 2 players were selected to join our Youth Development Team and 5 players to Pre-youth Squad Team. With subvention from LCSD. the new programme was introduced in May 2012 with 10 young athletes selected from the Young Athletes Scheme to undergo a 36-week systematic regular training at Ap Lei Chau Sports Centre on Saturday morning. 2 athletes were promoted to the Youth Development Team after the completion of the training. Under-25 Age Group Championship The inaugural Under-25 Age Group Championship was held in July at Hang Hau Man Kuk Lane Park Bowling Green. This was a new event organized by the Association. A total of 98 youngsters took part in the event. This is a record entry among the youth competitions organised by the HKLBA. Youth Novice Competition This competition was open to young bowlers aged under 25 and was successfully held at the Ap Lei Chau Sports Centre on 10 & 17 March A total of 50 participants took part in the event, and most of them were players under our Young Athletes Scheme (YAS). They achieved excellent results. The champion was Fung Ming Chung, 1st runner-up was Pang Sze Hang, 2nd runner-up were Tse Tun Laam and Ng Man Hei. Inter-schools Competition With support from LCSD and Southern District Council in 2009 for the first time, this competition was successfully held again at the Ap Lei Chau Sports Centre on 1 May A total of 24 teams with 82 primary and secondary students took part in the competition. The champion was Yan Chai Hospital No.2 Secondary School, 1st runner-up was Cheung Chuk Shan College and 2nd runner-up was Wah Yan College Kowloon. 17

Junior Squad Overseas Training : The Hong Kong Junior Squad Overseas Training Camp 2013 took place from 12 to 17 February at Bayuemas Indoor Bowls Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The team comprised 12 Junior Squad and potential youth players, these being Crystal Li, Pinky Chan, Vivian Yip, Andrea Chan, Yunse Ha, Monica Ho, Tiffany Tsui, Simpson Chang, Jason Choi, Clarence Chiu, Jason Tsang, Anthony Yip, with Coaches Arthur Yiu and Rita Shek.
