1 Venue changed to Hong Kong Hong Kong, June TH WORLD CONGRESS & EXHIBITION Deadline extension: 30 December 2014 In partnership with FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT CALL FOR PAPERS International Academy for Design & Health Media partner ARCHITECTURE CULTURE TECHNOLOGY

2 Revitalising Health in China by The scientific programme for the 11th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Hong Kong will explore the global application of salutogenic perspectives on improving human health and wellbeing by design The International Academy for Design and Health (IADH) will be organising the 11th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition (WCDH 2015) from 24 to 28 June, 2015 in Hong Kong. Host city Hong Kong is a multicultural metropolis with limited space created demand for denser construction, which developed the city into a center for modern architecture and the world s most vertical city. The confined area has also led to a highly developed transportation network with the public transport travelling rate exceeding 90 percent, the highest in the world According to UN estimates. Hong Kong has one of the longest life expectancies of any country or territory in the world. As of 2012, Hong Kong women are the longest living demographic group in the world. China has one of the longest recorded histories of the practice of medicine of any civilisation. Routed in ancient Chinese philosophy, the methods and theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) date back more than 2,000 years. It is a unique system of medical theory with holistic approaches to disease prevention and health preservation, and it is complementary to modern salutogenic approaches to health promotion. With rapid economic development resulting in large population movements from rural to urban environments, the health status of the Chinese people is integrally linked to the quality of the country s urban infrastructure and having access to clean, air, clean water and clean soil. By integrating salutogenic design methodologies that promote health and wellbeing with ecological design approaches that support natural ecosystems and prevent environmental destruction, architects, designers, planners and developers have a critical role to play in the creation of a healthy and more sustainable China. Well-designed healthcare facilities around the world are making a critical contribution to the process of healing and rehabilitation. However, a broader, more holistic perspective demonstrates that health processes are continuously operating in all types of physical environments. Design objectives for enhancing human health must facilitate an active lifestyle, enable the successful management of physical, psychological and emotional stress, and support mental and cognitive processing of information by stimuli in a variety of designed environments. The salutogenic perspective embraces both the art and science of health promotion through the exposure of wellness factors in the built environment that supports behavioural change and motivates us to lead healthier lifestyles. By improving our understanding of health as a process that engages social, mental, spiritual and physical wellbeing, the salutogenic approach recognises health as a fundamental resource to individuals, communities and nation states. Embracing the salutogenic perspective in how we shape our built environment to support more active lifestyles, at the core of a preventative health strategy, changes the focus from risk factors and the treatment of disease to a more holistic understanding of the factors that determine a healthier society. In the 21st century, a new society is emerging in China; it is one in which the ability to create a strong scientific research and knowledge infrastructure, support innovation, and enhance productivity through the creation, growth and exploitation of new knowledge will be key to the future prosperity and economic competitiveness of the country. By employing an interdisciplinary approach, architects, designers, engineers, public health scientists, psychologists and economists can improve the human condition by creating stimulating, enjoyable and sustainable environments that enhance health and wellbeing for all. The IADH wants to bring this understanding to the design and health professions in order to reduce the prevalence of lifestyle diseases and improve quality of life. We are therefore delighted to invite you to submit scientific abstracts and case studies by 30 December for the 11th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in the historical city of Hong Kong. Prof Alan Dilani PhD Founder and Chief Executive Officer, International Academy for Design & Health, Sweden Prof James Barlow PhD President, International Academy for Design & Health, UK Chair in Technology and Innovation Management, Imperial College, London, UK George Mann receives the Lifetime Leadership Award 2014, at the 10th Design and Health World Congress in Toronto Sharing ideas and exploring opportunities with colleagues during the exhibition at the 9th World Congress in Brisbane Announcing in Toronto that the 11th Design & Health World Congress will be held in China 2 WCDH 2015, June
