2 Towards Improving Health The International Academy for Design & Health introduces the Scientific Program for the 8th World Congress on Design & Health in partnership with the Ministry of Health Malaysia The International Academy for Design and Health will be organising the 8th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in partnership with the Ministry of Health Malaysia and supported by world-renowned academic institutions and healthcare industries worldwide. Following the acclaimed success of the 7th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition in Boston, USA, we are delighted to have renewed our commitment to the Asian region and to invite your contributions for the 8th Design & Health World Congress & Exhibition, to be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 27 June-1 July As the world undergoes a significant economic and demographic shift, the Asian region will be increasingly at the centre of world affairs socially, economically and politically. Many Asian countries, such as Malaysia, which is targeting to become a developed nation by 2020, have recognised that progressive societies aiming to achieve strong and sustainable economic growth must also be healthy societies. Growing awareness of the importance of health promotion and the need to invest in healthy and sustainable public, social, institutional and domestic infrastructure is placing Asian countries at the forefront of opportunity and the leading edge of change. In 1997, the World Health Organization identified that the health arena, including priority settings and frequently used spaces such as the workplace, schools, hospitals, correctional institutions, commercial offices and public spaces within our cities should be at the centre of health promotion activities in the 21st century. During the 66th meeting of the General Assembly of the United Nations this year, the socio-economic challenge facing the world of non-communicable disease was discussed for the first time. The IADH believes strongly that the built environment has a significant impact on health and is committed to bringing this understanding to the design and health professions in an effort to reduce the prevalance of these lifestyle diseases. Using the environment as a strategic tool is one of the most cost-effective and enduring approaches to improve public health. International research demonstrates how the quality of our public and private spaces is closely linked to levels of community and individual s health, socio-economic status, crime prevention efforts, poverty levels and our quality of life. The level of design quality in the built environment is also critical to the sustainable development of our neighborhoods, towns and cities. In one of the most important sectors, the successful delivery of health infrastructure, requires the adoption of a salutogenic approach that can support the delivery of high quality medical treatment and support the corporate development of the health provider as a health promoting organization where wellness factors are to the fore, embedded in the everyday cultural life of its staff, patients, their families and the local community. As the impact of the global economic downturn has forced governments and public institutions to face up to new challenges and priorities, the IADH believes that population health and well being is significantly related to, and influenced by, the designed environment. A Salutogenic approach to health and public infrastructure investment and development embedded at the core of a preventative care strategy changes the focus from risk factors and the treatment of disease to a more holistic understanding of a healthy society. 3 through Design Call for Papers The Design & Health World Congress provides an opportunity to engage with the world s foremost interdisciplinary network of thinkers in the field of design and health. Participants will join with architects, psychologists, physicians, nurses, health planners, environmental designers, health administrators, policy makers and other researchers, practitioners and key decision makers and influencers. The WCDH 2012 Congress Secretariat is delighted to invite you and your colleagues to participate in the 8th Design & Health World Congress 2012 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 27 June-1 July, 2012 by submitting abstracts on the following themes, with a focus on the Asian, African and Middle Eastern emerging economies: The future hospital: creating places and spaces for healing Case studies of successful healthy environments Salutogenic design for healthy communities and urban planning Improving health by design in emerging economies Developing international benchmarks in design and health Health policy, finance & planning: creating access to healthcare for all levels of society Indoor environmental quality to improve health & well-being New design paradigms influenced by medical technology The role of traditional and complementary medicine in modern healthcare infrastructure Authors are invited to submit abstracts of 400 words in English. The abstract should clearly state the objectives, methods used, results and conclusions. The paper will be presented to an audience with diverse interests and disciplines. Consequently, we are seeking presentations that focus on the practical importance of environmental design qualities that promote health. Papers addressing more than one of the congress themes will be given preference. All abstracts will be comprehensively blind peer reviewed by the WCDH 2012 Scientific Committee and a select number will be chosen for oral presentation with a wider number presented as posters. Abstracts and enquiries should be submitted by to the WCDH2012 Secretariat at the following address by no later than December 15, International Academy for Design & Health, Box Stockholm, Sweden. Papers chosen for presentation will be published in the Final Program and Book of Abstracts, with selected papers published in full in World Health Design in 2012/13. The author(s) or co-author(s) should register and pay the registration fee in order to present the paper at the conference. The official language of the WCDH 2012 is English. Yeunsook Lee PhD Yonsei University, Korea Dr Yeunsook Lee is professor and director of the Institute of Millenium Environmental Design and Research at Yonsei University in Korea. She is the author of many books on designing for children and the elderly in Korea. Rohaizan A Kadir Jailani Dr Rohaizan is the senior principle assistant director of the planning and development division at the Ministry of Health, Malaysia. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health (UK) by distinction. Massoud Shaker PhD, Pr Eng CPEng Minister of Health, South Africa Dr Massoud Shaker is senior advisor to the health minister of South Africa working on the redevelopment of health facilities in South Africa. He has a PhD in engineering from the University of New South Wales in Australia. Mohsen Mostafavi Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, USA An architect and educator, Mohsen Mostafavi is the Dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He serves on the steering committee of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture and the board of the Van Alen Institute. She is a fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Architects.
