3 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss MIT Chapel Massachusetts Avenue W15 77 Cambridge Massachusetts United States l Eero Saarinen designed the non-denominational MIT Chapel in 1955 It is located opposite the Kresge Auditorium which was also designed by Saarinen The oval chapel is a cylindrical brick form constructed of rough and imperfect bricks which catch the sunlight on its textured surface The building sits in a shallow moat and is supported by a series of low arches of different radii which rise out of the moat that reflects patterns of light onto the exterior wall of the chapel and evokes images of bridges spanning a river To enter the small chapel, one walks from the public spaces surrounding the chapel into a small grove of birch trees, enters through the timber doors which are located off the main oval and turns 180 degrees to head back through a enclosed glazed bridge into the circular chapel and is then drawn towards the light falling onto the white marble altar from the ceiling 1955 Eero Saarinen thom photo: Thom Mckenzie The MIT Chapel is open seven days a week from When nothing is scheduled during those times, it is open to members of the MIT Community for private meditation The chapel is located within the grounds of MIT Take the Red Line subway at the Kendall Stop Parking is available on the campus 3

4 photo: Frankss photo: Frankss Kresge Auditorium Massachusetts Ave 48 Cambridge Massachusetts United States l Kresge Auditorium was designed by Finnish architect Eero Saarinen It is located opposite the MIT Chapel on the Kresge Oval The pair of buildings were designed to define MIT's social cohesion The Auditorium was designed for formal events and the chapel was designed for marriages and memorial services with the oval in between as a public space for civic events The auditorium has an elegant copper-clad roof which springs from the ground at three points with sheer glazed walls that fill in the arches created by the form of the roof These sheer glazed walls offer views into the lobby and out onto the green The roof was constructed as a thin-shell structure of concrete which was an innovative building technique at the time of construction The building contains a concert hall which can seat 1226 people and a small theatre with 204 seats, rehearsal rooms, dressing rooms, offices, bathrooms and lounges The domed roof allows the interiors to remain column free photo: Thom Mckenzie Project is not public! 1955 Eero Saarinen thom The building is located on the MIT Campus Take the Red Line subway to Kendall Stop Parking is available on campus 4

8 Kleinhans Music Hall Symphony Circle 1 Buffalo New York United States Kleinhans Music Hall ranks among the Saarinens finest work, exemplifying their sophisticated aesthetic and artistic principles: the shape of the music hall represents both organic and functional notions, with the graceful curvilinear massing encasing a large auditorium and smaller music chamber This fine sense of balance is representative, in Eliel s words, of the structure s 'masculine' and 'feminine' traits as exhibited by 'strongly indicative line' in the former and 'playful pattern of wall surface' in the latter The result is a structure of incredible beauty and utility, with an international reputation as one of the acoustically finest concert halls in the world Home of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra since 1940, Kleinhans was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989 and is slated to be a major venue for the National Historic Trust s Conference in 2011 (text from project's website) Public access unknown! 1940 Main designer, Eliel Saarinen Eero Saarinen Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo photo: Matthew Mancuso Arch Take I- 90 West to the last exit Merge onto NY-33/Kensington Expressway via exit 51W toward Buffalo (33 West) Get off at Goodell Street Go straight through to Elmwood Avenue Turn Right onto Elmwood Avenue Go up three lights to North St and make a left onto North Go around the circle and Kleinhans will be right in front of you 8

9 Michael Lee-Chin Crystal Queen s Park 100 M5S 2C6 Toronto As one of the most important architectural projects and a distinctive new symbol of Toronto for the 21st century, the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal marks the beginning of a new age for the Royal Ontario Museum The Crystal Age announces the Museum as the country s premier cultural and social destination Inspired by the ROM s gem and mineral collection, Libeskind sketched the initial expansion on paper napkins while attending a family wedding at the ROM The design was quickly dubbed the 'crystal' because of its crystalline shape The Lee-Chin Crystal is composed of five interlocking, self-supporting prismatic structures that co-exist but are not attached to the original ROM building, except for the bridges that link them 2007 Daniel Libeskind Royal Ontario Museum Bjorn_Utpott tel: Monday to Thursday :10:00 am - 5:30 pm Friday: 10:00 am - 9:30 pm Saturday and Sunday: 10:00 am - 5:30 pm The main entrance to the new Michael Lee-Chin Crystal is located on Bloor Street West There are two additional entrances located on the ROM Plaza: ROM Museum Store and Bennett Music Court (the latter provides after-hours access to c5 Restaurant Lounge) The St George stop on the Bloor-Danforth subway line is closest to the ROM s main entrance on Bloor Street W The President's Choice School Entrance is located at the Museum stop on the Yonge-University-Spadina subway line 9

13 Art Gallery of Ontario Dundas Street West 317 M5T 1G4 Toronto This project completely transforms the original Art Gallery of Ontario which was built in successive stages from 1918 to 1993 The existing spaces were renovated and reorganized The entrance was relocated to the centre of a new 180m long, curved glass façade along Dundas Street in the north The glass façade, which is cut and peels back at the both ends, wraps the 1974 addition Behind it, the continuous sculpture gallery allows visitors to look out over Dundas Street To the south, a dramatic blue titanium clad gallery block towers over Grange Park, complementing the new Ontario College of Art and Design building An expressive sculptural staircase cantilevers out of a glazed area in the gallery block Floor area/size m² Structural engineer Gehry Partners Yolles Engineering Solutions Art Gallery of Ontario Bjorn_Utpott Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:30 except Wednesday 10:00 to 20:30 (2010) Take the Bloor University Spadina Subway to St Patrick Station and walk 250m west on Dundas Street 13

14 Absolute World Hurontario Sreet 4003 L4Z 0A9 Mississauga These unique 50 and 56 storey condominium towers are located in Mississauga, a suburban city 20 km west of downtown Toronto Winner of an international design competition, the design was chosen by the developer's panel of judges as well as a poll of 6000 residents The 2 towers' twisting shapes, are created by oval floors that rotate by different degrees on different levels The degree of rotation increases toward the middle before decreasing again towards the top of each building The effect is more dynamic than it would have been with a constant degree of rotation Each tower is sited so that it complements the other: the bulge in one tower corresponds to the narrowest part in its fraternal twin The sculptural buildings are gaining landmark status in Mississauga Project is not public!
