2 n Blik op die afgelope 30 jaar Wat sê 'n mens oor 'n skool soos Parel Vallei - 'n plek wat nie soos 'n skool voel nie, maar soos 'n ouerhuis : daar is lewe, warmte, omgee, onderskraging, belangstelling, aanmoediging? Parel Vallei het sedert 1986 gegroei vanaf 'n personeel van onder 20 en 'n leerdertal van minder as 300 tot 'n skool met 'n totale personeel van meer as 100 en 'n leerdertal van Die derde skoolhoof is verlede jaar aangestel. Die ouerhuisgevoel het egter net sterker geword. Ons mooi skool is vanjaar 30 jaar oud. Van die oorspronklike personeel hou nou nog hier skool, van die oudleerders se kinders het al hier gematrikuleer, elke jaar kom skryf nog oudleerders hul kinders vir graad 8 in Ons stamboom groei In 1986 is maar net nog 'n skool in die Wes-Kaap gebou, onbekend en niks belangriks nie. Vandag loop Parel Vallei se reputasie hom vooruit. Die publiek weet waar die skool is, weet van Parel Vallei se prestasies op kultuur-, akademiese en sportgebied. Elke jaar is daar baie meer inskrywings vir graad 8 as wat die skool kan akkommodeer. Parel Vallei het ontwikkel, mooi ontwikkel, op baie gebiede ontwikkel Ons is baie trots op ons mooi skool en vol vertroue dat die volgende 30 jaar se getuigskrif volgeskryf sal word met nog beter prestasies. 4 Headmaster s Message Die stoep by Ledbury is een van my gunstelingplekke waar ek baie van my dinkwerk doen. Dit is 'n voorreg om die geleentheid to hê om daar te sit en beplan sowel, as om terug te dink oor die jaar was my eerste volle jaar as 'n skoolhoof en ek is bale trots op wat die skool bereik het. Van die graad 8- kamp voor die jaar begin het tot en met die laaste eksamens was dit 'n ongelooflike ervaring en ek kan skaars glo hoe vinning dit gegaan het. Die skool is besig en hierdie jaarblad is getuienis daarvan. Parel Vallei bied ongelooflik baie geleenthede en ek is bly om te sien hoe meer en meer van ons kinders daarvan gebruik maak. Dit is nie net die deelname wat toeneem nie, maar ook die prestasies op alle vlakke en oor 'n breë reeks aktiwiteite. I am starting to feel the effects of the Blue Thread campaign aimed at uniting us as a school past and present. The vastly improved communication through the Communicator and the school website highlighting day to day information and celebrating excellence through written word and pictures is having far reaching effects. We celebrated our 30th year this year and I feel an energy in the school and a determination to excel at even more levels. The 2015 school magazine celebrates the activities for the year and for the first time we are including written reports to go with the photos as a record of events. The magazine will also be stored digitally and made available on the school's website - another 1st for PV! Ek is baie trots op ons skool en wil erkenning gee aan al ons personeel wat dit moontlik maak vir ons kinders om so 'n opvoeding te kry. Parel Vallei is een van die bastionne van uitnemendheid in die Wes-Kaap en ons is vasberade om daaraan te bou en standaarde hoog te hou. Hartlike Parel Vallei-groete David Schenck Principal: Mr David Schenck Stigtersnaweek Die eerste boublokke vir 'n nuwe tradisie is gelê toe Parel Vallei vir die heel eerste keer 'n Stigtersnaweek, vir die herdenking van die skool se 30ste bestaansjaar, gevier het tydens die Winter- Interskolenaweek. Die blou lint (blue thread) van trots wat deur die skool vloei, was tasbaar tydens die Stigtersdagseremonie. Die doel van dié seremonie was om God te dank vir dit wat was en Sy seën te vra op wat nog moet gebeur, terwyl Parel Vallei sal voortgaan om na uitnemendheid te strewe Onderwysers en gaste het heerlik saam verjaardagkoek geëet en leerders het gesmul aan verjaardag-oliebolle wat hoë energievlakke verseker het vir die BIG BRAG, wat gevolg is deur die eerste derbywedstryde teen Somerset College. The weekend ended with the PVU (Parel Vallei Union) dinner and dance on the Saturday evening. It is a highlight on the school's calendar when past Parel Valleiers, parents and friends of PV reunite and relive the good old days! May Parel Vallei, through the Parel Valllei Union, always remain the centre point for close friendships and business associations that will last a life time! 2

5 Governing Body and PVU Governing Body: Dr I Malherbe Congratulations Parel Vallei on your 30th birthday. When you reach such an important birthday it gives us time to reflect on the past but more so to look ahead. Parel Vallei achieved so much in such a short time. We are competing on all levels with schools much older than ours, and on the academic field we are among the leaders of the pack in the Western Cape. The governing body is acutely aware to maintain the standards of excellence that was set by the previous GBs. We are driven by the concept of legacy (Blue Thread). Often when you think about legacy, it's something that is left behind after a person has passed. Legacy is more about sharing what we have learned, not just what we have earned, and bequeathing values over valuables, as material wealth is only a small fraction of our legacy. A more holistic definition of legacy is when you are genuinely grounded in offering yourself and making a meaningful, lasting and energizing contribution to humanity by serving a cause greater than your own. The requirements of a legacy are that we embrace our uniqueness, passionately immersing ourselves into life so that our gift will be to all and that we take responsibility to ensure that it will have a life beyond that of our own, its creator, outliving and outlasting our time on earth. Hierdie nalatenskap skep sekere uitdagings. Die grootste hiervan is om die groeiende getal aansoeke te akkommodeer. Vanjaar het ons net onder die ses honderd aansoeke gehad vir die moontlike 260 plekke. Dit verseker egter dat ons leerders van hoë gehalte is en die skool net van krag tot krag kan gaan. Dit bevestig dan ook net hoe gewild en gesog Parel Vallei geword het onder die inwoners van die Helderbergkom. Uitnemendheid in 'n veranderde wêreld skep groot uitdagings om die skool se finansies en kapitaalprojekte te bestuur gedurende die taai ekonomiese tyd. Ons strewe om ons kampus se fasiliteite uit te brei, geniet voortdurend aandag en in die nabye toekoms sal ons hopelik kan rondplas in ons eie swembad. Vanjaar was beslis 'n jaar waar daar groot vooruitgang gemaak is in die vasstelling van Parel Vallei se nalatenskap. Hoogtepunte wat uitstaan vir my was beslis die volgende: 2014 se fantastiese matriekuitslae Derde posisie in die Wes-Kaap in Wiskunde en ook 'n Top 10-plek in die Wiskunde-olimpiade die doodsnikke-oorwinning van die atletiekinterskole die fantastiese talentuitstalling tydens die musical ons stigtersnaweek die talle wonderlike kultuur- en sportprestasies. Ons is regtig geseën met ouers wat 'n verskil wil maak. Dit is verblydend om te sien hoe wonderlik die ouers hul kinders en die skool ondersteun tydens die talle akademiese, kulturele en sportgeleenthede. Ek wil dan ook van hierdie geleentheid gebruik maak om die ouers en opvoeders te bedank vir hul onbaatsugtige diens aan Parel Vallei. Sonder julle ondersteuning sal Parel Vallei net nie die hoë standaarde kan volhou nie. Ons sien uit na nuwe uitdagings in Ian Malherbe Trotse Parel Valleier 30 years ago the legend began, but we could never imagine it would look like this. PVU Report The Parel Vallei Union (PVU) has had an exciting 2015, and as such has achieved significant milestones during the year. Probably the most profound of these has been the incorporation of its members to include not only past pupils and teachers, but also parents of all pupils, past and present. A year ago the Parel Vallei Union was established with the clear vision to create a lasting legacy, while working together and honouring our shared experience at Parel Vallei and, most importantly, translating this history into meaningful relationships in the present. The power and success of any organisation lies deeply rooted in the individual contributions and synergy harnessed from its members. Ons is baie trots op die resultate wat ons skool al behaal het, en ons vertrou dat dit maar net die fondasie is vir dit wat voorlê. Dit is duidelik dat ons skool se visie op elke aspek van die leerder se ontwikkeling toegepas word. Die PVU wil graag hê dat elke leerder wat ons skool verlaat, sal weet dat daar 'n plek is waar hulle kan kom aanklop en deel word van 'n organisasie wat hulle skool ondersteun en uitbrei om sodoende 'n nalatenskap vir jare daarna te los. Parel Vallei has over the past, and will continue to strive to do so, kept a strong unique characteristic touching every avenue within the school. This 'Blue Thread' is now boldly evident and present in every activity that takes place at the school. It is precisely this 'Blue Thread' that the PVU is striving to foster within the ambits of you being able to give back to the community, that which has been invested in you. Die PVU het weereens hierdie jaar 'n baie suksesvolle reünie gehou en ons getalle in lidmaatskap bly groei. Die nuwe klubhuis se planne is al ver gevorder, en so ook die PVU se deelname aan verskeie skoolaktiwiteite. Ons vertrou dat PVU sal groei van krag tot krag en dat ons saam met die skool, jaar na jaar vordering sal maak en sukses sal behaal. 6 Boodskap van Hoofleiers Jacque Gericke - Hoofseun Wat 'n voorreg om 'n PV Bulldog te kon wees. Baie bevoorreg om ook hoofseun te kon wees van ons geliefde skool. Soveel goeie herinneringe om in die toekoms met my saam te neem. Soveel dankies te sê aan almal wat die pad saam met my gestap het die afgelope vyf jaar. Te veel om op te noem. Parel Vallei-familie, as daar een wenk is wat ek jul kan gee, is dit: maak gebruik van elke geleentheid en streef daarna om die beste te wees wat jy kan. Doen wat jou gelukkig maak. Laat Filippense 4:13 jou lei op jou toekomspad, Ek is tot alles in staat deur Hom wat my krag gee. Hiermee 'n ode aan Parel Vallei, geliefde skool. 2011, Hoërskool, 'n nuwe begin stap ons as graad aggies by Parel Vallei se hekkie in. Brakkies onder die arm, naambordjies om die nek tradisie hier by PV is beslis in plek. Oriëntering was 'n fees want ons wou mos bulldogs wees. Gou het ons geleer om betrokke te raak dis wat van jou 'n ware bulldog maak. Akademie, sport, kultuur - Parel Vallei het soveel te bied iets vir 'n ieder en elk om te geniet. Aan die verskeidenheid van kultuur en sport is daar by PV geen tekort. Al was die uitslae nie altyd na wense was ons bly oor die ondersteuning van ons mense. PV jou lekker ding! 'n Lied wat ons met oorgawe sing. Met tonne toetse en take het ons by PV geleer met harde werk is daar aan ons geen keer. Saam het ons soms harde bene gekou vriendskapsbande wat vir ewig sal hou. Aan sommige onderwysers se lippe kon ons hang vir ander was ons sommer net bang! Gelukkig het die skoolwerk eerste gekom en die uitslae, onderwysers en ouers verstom. 'n Paar keer langs die pad moes ons die oë ook klad. Ons groet ons geliefde mnr Gouws met seer harte en 'n staande applous. Mnr Schenk - ons nuwe dinamiese hoof, oulike onderwysers plus passievolle leerders, laat klop die syfers. Parel Vallei is nog net in die begin met soveel meer om nog te ontgin. Head Boy & Girl 2015: Jacque Gericke, Amy Ward Sapienta et inteligentia (wysheid en insig) is ons leuse om volle potensiaal te bereik, 'n definitiewe keuse. PV fokus op ontwikkeling van liggaam, siel en gees dus kan ons nie anders as om uitnemend te wees. Jaar na jaar is hoogtepunte bereik voorwaar 'n skool om na op te kyk. Die blou draad bind ons almal saam Parel Vallei ons skool se trotse naam! Vinnig het die tyd gevlieg 2015 en ons is amper deur matriek. Met die eindeksamen voor die deur is al wat oorbly net leer, leer, leer! Met die toekoms wat blink en die grootmenswêreld wat wink. Ons sal die skool in ons gebede en harte omvou Parel Vallei, geliefde skool, ons sal jou altyd onthou. Totsiens en beste wense vir 'n fantastiese toekoms. Jacque Gericke Amy Ward - Head Girl My Parel Vallei story is one that I will not forget soon. Even if I wanted to forget it, I think it would prove impossible. Parel Vallei is too much a part of who I am today. It is here, between these walls, that I have made some of my closest friends and fondest memories. It feels surreal to be saying goodbye to a place I have come to know so well. Even though I am ready to leave, because one does get to that point, my heart twinges with emotion when I think of everything that I am leaving behind. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the way that God has blessed this time for me. I have witnessed such remarkable lives and come to know such inspiring people. I don' t feel emotional because this chapter is closing, I feel emotional because sometimes it takes leaving to realise how wonderful something was. That is the crux of it - I get to walk away with an array of beautiful memories, blessed with people who have changed me for the better and for that reason, I can walk away fulfilled and content. Parel Vallei is an excellent school. It can nurture you if you allow it to. What has always made it special to me is the spirit. Fame, success, status... that's all lovely, I'm sure, but without substance, I think it's pointless. I have always felt substance behind everything we do. People are so diverse - they are passionate, responsible, caring, talented and clever, just to name a few things. There is a place for every individual here and when we unite, we make magic. Your time here will fly by and pretty soon you will walk out of these doors for the last time as well. You will know it is your time, but I hope in that moment you will look back over your shoulder and smile at all that you see, knowing that you have reached the end of a beautiful story. While you are here, make things happen. Find opportunities, use them and make a change for the better. You are all capable of contributing something positive to this school, it's just a matter of putting that capability into action. As Jim Elliot said, Wherever you are, be all there. You will find true enjoyment if you are present in every moment. For the past five years, this has been home and you have all been family. Earlier this year I was asked what The Blue Thread meant to me. That hits the nail on the head for me: The Blue Thread is not forceful - it is inevitable. It is this, this family. What we don't realise is that when we leave, Parel Vallei leaves its very own Blue Thread imprinted on us. When you are a part of this family, you will leave a legacy, but quietly in the background, Parel Vallei is busy changing you at the same time. It's a beautiful transformation on both sides. The Parel Vallei family is a remarkable group of people. From our newest grade eight members to our veteran teachers, I appreciate every one of you and am excited to see how you will all be a part of uplifting and improving our home. It has been an honour. Farewell Mrs Pienaar: 01/07/ /12/2015 Farewell Mrs Rabie: 01/01/ /12/2015 Tot siens mev van Staden: 01/01/ /12/2015 Tot siens mnr Smit: 01/01/ /12/2015 When Mrs Pat Pienaar began teaching at Parel Vallei High School in July 1993, she came with an impressive range of experience. She had taught at a wide variety of schools (including Constantia Boys' Reformatory -small wonder that discipline proved no problem to this astute, dignified teacher), lectured part time and been a publications consultant. Mrs Pienaar's expertise and skill established her as the doyen of the English Department. Her collegial leadership style was much appreciated, as was her razor sharp wit. She established both the quarterly newspaper, La Voix and Interact, a service club affiliated to Rotary. Mrs Pienaar has had a profound influence on many lives. We wish her a happy retirement, with many fulfilling new ventures. It is with sadness that the Commercial Department says good bye to Mrs Marianne Rabie at the end of 2015, when she retires from teaching. She started at Parel Vallei in January 2003, and has made a valuable contribution in the classroom, teaching EMS, Accounting and Business Studies across all grades in her 13 years at the school. Outside of the classroom, she managed the school golf team for a number of years, and transported many a learner to school related events in the school busses after obtaining her code 10 driving licence. It is perhaps for her unfailing faith that she will be most fondly remembered by the staff. Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16) is truly how Marianne lives her life. Her values and morals, and care for her fellow man are beyond reproach. Marianne is indeed a wellrespected colleague and teacher who is going to be missed by both the teachers and learners. We wish her a happy, healthy, fulfilling retirement. Margaret van Staden het in Januarie 1997 by Parel Vallei aangesluit en die vak, Geografie / Aardrykskunde gr. 8-12, onderrig. Sy is passievol oor haar vak en het oor die jare uitstekende matriekuitslae behaal. Sy het ook die vakhoofskap van Geografie met nougesetheid hanteer - altyd beskikbaar om te help en die jonges te lei. Sy was ook vir etlike jare graadhoof vir die graad 10- groep. Vir baie jare was sy alleen verantwoordelik vir die organisering en spyseniering van funksies wat die skool aangebied het. Sy was ook by tennisafrigting betrokke. As 'n gewaardeerde kollega gaan ons haar baie mis, maar ons beste wense vergesel haar en haar man, Jannie, wie se aftreejare nou voorlê. Na 19 jaar van onbaatsugtige diens aan 'n skool wat sy op die hart gedra het, groet ons haar. Soos 'n stewige bastion staan die withaarman in die 500-gang. Hou links!. Dis woorde waarmee elke nuwe graad aggie in die skool ingelyf word. Vanjaar groet ons vir mnr. Nico Smit. Na 18 jaar van onbaatsugtige diens as getroue ondersteuner van skoolsport, streng beoefenaar van dissipline en onvervangbare bron van wyse woorde aan matriekregisterklasse (en Afrikaanse klasse) verlaat mnr. Smit ons skool vir 'n welverdiende rustyd op onder andere sy geliefde Hartenbos. ( Dis lekker by die see! ) Mag die nuwe era vol lekker ervaringe en geseënde rus wees. Ons sal u mis, mnr. Smit. 32 AP Maths The IEB Advanced Programme Mathematics course was introduced to our grade 10 pupils in 2011 and our first cohort of matriculants wrote their final examination in A total of 90 pupils have enrolled in 2015 with a matric group of 26. The 2014 results were excellent with 3 of the 22 pupils obtaining a mark above 80%. Reports received from past pupils studying at tertiary institutions highlight the benefits of the programme. Uit die rekordgetal van 180 skole wat deelgeneem het, het Parel Vallei vierde geëindig. Altesaam 8 leerders het goue toekennings ontvang vir top 10 posisies in die kompetisie. 34 A Levels Advanced education at Parel Vallei The Advanced Education Centre has made good progress during 2015 and continues to add value to the PV package. The Cambridge Exam results were a credit to both learners and staff: of the 54 papers written, 48 were graded, 6 received As and only 5 were ungraded. An Outreach Evening, held in September, was attended by over 150 parents and learners. The AEC has received 86 applications for courses starting in July These are spread over 7 different subjects, including Psychology, which has been re-introduced. The AEC has received Associate Examinations Centre status through the British Council, which means that our candidates will once again be able to sit for their exams at PV, and will not have to write at outside venues. A highlight of the year was the star-gazing trip to Sutherland in July. Some 35 learners and staff made the journey. 53 Music Drumline Drumline was established in January 2005 by Mr Duncan Combe. It has since gone from strength to strength taking part in both the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Eisteddfods, Music Concerts, the Grand West Backstage Pass, Open Day and at sports events. It consists of 5-8 members: boys and/or girls from Gr Drumline selection has been based on technical skill and all the members have formal lessons to keep the level as high as possible. Music Bursary Seung Ree Lee, a Grade12 learner has been awarded a Bursary and Departmental Scholarship from the University of Stellenbosch Conservatoire of Music for 2016, where she will continue her studies in piano. Seung Ree Lee has been an active performer this year and has been awarded numerous awards, medals and trophies from the Stellenbosch, Helderberg and Tygerberg International Eisteddfods as well as being a finalist in the Pieter Kooij NATIONAL MUSIC Competition and the winner of the Music Maestro Competition: Senior Classical section. 56 Musical Back to the 80's a Totally Awesome Musical! and what an awesome musical it was! The theme of the musical celebrated the 30 years of Parel Vallei High School's existence, as 'Back to the 80's' is a musical set in the era in which Parel Vallei was founded. For many parents and teachers it was a trip down memory lane, as the musical featured all the well-known songs from the 80's: From the up-beat Kids in America, Footloose, Video killed the Radio Star and 500 miles, to the more heart-wrenching, dramatic songs such as Total Eclipse of the Heart, Eye of the Tiger and The Final Countdown. Michael Jacksons and Madonnas, big shoulders, big earrings and even bigger hair, bright neon t-shirts, legwarmers and sun-glasses filled the stage with all the colour, attitude and flair of the 80's. The 86 strong cast and crew consisted mainly of Gr 11s and 12s who were singers, dancers, choreographers, actors, musicians, technicians and backstage hands. Rehearsals started early in the year and after many, many hours of rehearsals, dedication, laughter and tears, curtain-up revealed a most enjoyable and entertaining musical of utmost professional standards. The audience was left aghast at the outstanding talent of all the actors, singers, musicians and dancers in the production. For all involved, this musical was an amazing journey. All the talents discovered, the friendships made, the memories and the mishaps, the aspirations realized and confidence built made every minute of sacrifice and commitment worthwhile. 58 Drama Parel Vallei se dramaproduksies het weereens vanjaar uitstekend gevaar en PV se naam met trots uitgedra. Die potensiaal en rou talent wat op die verhoog uit elkeen van die leerders gestraal het, was inspirerend, om nie eers te praat van die entoesiasme waarmee hul elke produksie aangepak het nie. Nie net het hulle verskeie pryse verower nie, maar hulle het uit hierdie drama-ervaring vriendskappe, ondervindinge en lewenslesse ryker geword. Hulle het bewys dat hulle werk van hoë kwaliteit is en het weereens puik gevaar met toneelspel sowel as regie, tegniese inkleding en teksskepping! PV het met 2 produksies, Life Wish deur Yanou Pienaar en Sondebok deur Annelie van Zyl, en 31 leerders aan VIER toneelfeeste elk deelgeneem. Hierdie feeste sluit in die Logan Toneelfees te Fraserburg, Klein Libertas Toneelfees in Stellenbosch, die Durbanville Toneelfees by Hoërskool Durbanville, asook die ATKV- Tienertoneelkompetisie. Sondebok het aan die einde van die seisoen 'n vierde plek in die Wes-Kaap in die ATKV-Tienertoneelkompetisie verower. 59 Public Speaking Redenaarsverslag Vanjaar het 15 leerders ingeskryf vir die ATKV- Redenaarskompetisie. Ses leerders het deurgedring tot die semi-finale rondte en vier leerders het onder die Top 10 in die Wes-Kaap geëindig. 'n Groter getal leerders het vanjaar vir die Toespraakaand ingeskryf, wat verblydend is. Tydens dié aand is twee leerders gekies om aan die Hottentots-Holland Redenaarskompetisie tussen skole van Stellenbosch, die Helderbergkom en Kuilsrivier, deel te neem. Die ATKV waardeer dit opreg dat Parel Vallei bereid is om hul geriewe beskikbaar te stel vir die aanbied van die 1ste rondte van die Wes-Kaap hoërskole en semi-finale rondte van die Wes-Kaap hoër- en laerskolekompetisie. 60 Klubs Eco club The Eco club has again been active in Parel Vallei High School has been awarded the International Flag Award for being an Eco-School for 5 years and for working towards a healthy environment. The Eco-committee carried on with the initiative of recycling paper and collecting e-waste at the end of each term. We visited the Eco centre at Jan Marais Nature Reserve and Hayley Wittridge addressed the school about the importance of soil conservation in the International Year of Soil. Can collections, Strand beach clean-up and a talk, hike and picnic in the Helderberg Nature Reserve were among the activities that members could take part in during the year. Participants can be awarded a bronze, silver or gold medal, each of which has requirements to fulfil in the areas of service, skills, physical recreation and an adventurous journey. The Gold Standard is the highest level, and requires commitment, perseverance and dedication to complete over a minimum period of 12 months. Our 2014 Head Girl Robyn Keet was called upon to give her testimony on the impact of the Award Programme at this year's Gold Award Ceremony which was held at Bishops Diocesan College in October Robyn completed her Gold Standard in 2014 and Parel Vallei is very proud of the example she has set. In completing the President's Award I have learnt vital life skills, the most important being independence, perseverance, social responsibility and leadership. Through the challenges of the Award, I discovered what I truly believed in and what it is that I want to stand for. As Joshua Marine said, 'Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful'. More and more learners are enrolling for First Aid courses. We had sixty qualified First Aiders in Parel Vallei this year. Thirty five learners qualified this year for level 1, 2 or 3 certificates. 'n Noodhulpkursus behels ten minste vier dae intensiewe opleiding gevolg deur 'n teoretiese en 'n praktiese eksamen. 'n Vlak 1 kursus kan in graad 8 of 9 gedoen word en om vlak 3 te doen moet die leerder ten minste in Graad 11 of 12 wees. Danté Alberts het hierdie jaar die toekenning gekry vir die persoon wat die hoogste punte gekry het in 'n praktiese noodhulpeksamen - 96% vir die Vlak 3 praktiese eksamen. Noodhelpers lewer 'n diens aan die skool tydens sportbyeenkomste waar hulle bystand lewer by enige beserings of noodgevalle. Hier leer en oefen hulle die nodige vaardighede vir basiese noodhulp, maar hulle kry ook baie lewenservaring om noodsituasies te kan hanteer. Die senior noodhelpers tree op as mentors vir die juniors. So het Parel Vallei se noodhulpspan in 2015 altesaam 548 ure diens gedoen!! 63 Clubs ATKV Die ATKV het vanjaar die bul by die horings gepak en ingeskryf vir die HANDEVATprojek. Dit behels dat 'n bevoorregte skool die geleentheid kry om in samewerking met 'n minderbevoorregte skool 'n volhoubare projek aan te pak ten bate van die minderbevoorregte skool. Tereo-skool, 'n skool langs die N2 met ongeveer 60 kinders uit minderbevoorregte omstandighede, het ingestem tot die projek. Die ATKV-klub het gehelp met 'n leeskamer. 'n Skenker uit Engeland het die klaskamer geskenk en die komitee het die boeke en meubels gekry en die klas versier. Veels geluk aan die hele komitee vir 'n puik nalatenskap. Dit is 'n voorreg om ander te help en op te hef. The weekly cell group at Marti's grew from strength to strength and the Tuesday weekly break meetings were well attended and enjoyed by all with a number of guest speakers and youth pastors throughout the year. Our Hospital project has been launched thanks to our own special team of parent and staff support. We worked closely with the Sunrise Rotary Club and a number of NGOs to assist people and animals in need. This year we participated in quite a number of fundraisers. Our volunteers assisted Sunrise Rotary during their annual Rotary Race Night to help raise funds for Animal Welfare. Some of our members also marshalled at the Cycle for Life event in support of Hospice. The Interact Club sold Casual Day stickers and the proceeds were donated to Aanhouwen. We also supported them by managing a stall at their annual market day. The money from our weekly cupcake sales have been donated to the Gabriella Centre. Other projects include a food drive for Pebbles crèche, a dog food drive for the Animal Welfare Society, knitting squares to make blankets, two blood drive events to support the WP Blood Transfusion Service and the Tops and Tags project with the goal to collect enough to buy a wheelchair for a person in need. However, it remains important for us to interact with our community, so not only did we raise funds and manage projects, but our members also made time to visit the various institutions we support on a regular basis. 64 Service / Diens Biblioteek Ons biblioteek het tien prefekte, twee uit elke graad. Gedurende graad 11 of 12 word een van die prefekte bevorder na Hoofbiblioteekprefek. In Oktober word posisies geadverteer en leerders kan aansoek doen om biblioteekprefekte te word. Aansoekvorms is by die biblioteek beskikbaar. Die prefekte moet elkeen drie diensbeurte gedurende die week doen: een elk tydens eerste, tweede pouse en na skool. Daar is ook een vergadering per kwartaal. Pligte sluit in: doen diens by fotostaatmasjien, hanteer kleingeld, help met boeke uitleen en terug ontvang, help biblioteekgebruikers om lekker boeke te vind om te lees en inligting vir take te kry, boeke wegpak, opruim van biblioteek. PV library is not a boring, quiet place, but alive and active, a fun place to be. Thanks to the our prefects, we provide an excellent service to the school. We also provide the newest reading material as it is being published. History was also made this year when 10 athletes were take on a Karoo tour to participate in the Cradock Top Ten athletics meeting. The aim was to get kids on bicycles and introduce them to the sport of Mountain Biking. We had training rides twice a week and participated in local events. Our learners developed quickly and soon they were participating in provincial, national and even international races. Our team grew in strength and depth. Since 2010 we participated in The Spur High School Mountain Bike League and every year we had the privilege of sending our top riders to the Nationals of the School League in Gauteng. In 2015 our team consisted out of 45 Cyclists. Every year we have learners receiving their Western Province colours and achieving great results in the SA Cup Series and SA Championships. We had learners participating in the African Continental Championships where they achieved podium positions. We even had 3 learners participating internationally at the World Cup and World Championships. Two of our highlights were when our boys' team came 3rd at the Nationals of the School League in 2014 and when our mixed team was the winners of the league in the Western Province in It is great to see our learners grow a love for the sport and enjoying their time in nature. We are achieving our goals and enjoying the journey! In the early years, Lucy Saunders obtains Springbok colours for Life Saving. Some of our top results included Ashley Oliver who was selected for the SA Junior Age Group team to compete in Brazil twice and obtained a bronze medal at SA Senior nationals. Yolandi van der Merwe was selected as Senior WP captain and chosen to represent South Africa at the Open Water swimming in France. The efficient organization by the learner council combined with irrepressible Grade 8 enthusiasm once again made the Grade 8 gala a very enjoyable event. The Inter-house Gala was characterized by maximum learner participation. Our local Helderberg Intershools was tightly contested with both the boys and girls of Parel Vallei beating Somerset College. 69 Gholf en Skaak Golf Two teams (first and second) were entered in the Boland Schools League. Our first team won two of the four matches played against Somerset College and Paul Roos, both regarded as very strong teams. Our four top players, Craig Black, Wernher Böck, Maxine Smet and Dara Steingaszner represented Parel Vallei at the Boland Interschools Tournament. Craig Black represented us at the Boland Top 60 Tournament and came second. This second place automatically qualified him to represent Boland Schools against Western Province. The highlight of the year was a golf tour to the West Coast. The players played against the Development Team of the West Coast. In total 50 pupils have joined, or at least visited, the PV chess club. A record number of 30 of our pupils have played in chess matches or tournaments this year. It is the first year that we have been able to enter 4 teams in the league matches: u/18 open, u/15a&b and an all girls' team. It was with great pride that we heard that 3 of our teams were selected to play in the District East Top Schools Chess Trials at Beaumont in August. Later in August they went through to face much tougher competition in the WP Top Schools trails where PV was ranked third in the Western Province. Two players have been selected to represent Chess Western Province in the U/18 Squad at the 2015 South African Junior Chess Championships (SAJCC) which will take place at the University of Cape Town from 3-10 January

Hierdie dubbels- en gemengde dubbelspeltoernooi bied aan ons spelers die geleentheid om mee te ding teen sterk skole wat buite GIRLS Senior 1st Team BACK: L de Clippel, J Whitfield FRONT: A Greyling, E van Wyk, C Greyling ons onmiddellike omgewing geleë is. Skole van so ver as Oudtshoorn, Vredenburg, Humansdorp, Bellville en Moorreesburg ding mee om die titel. At our annual interschool's clash with Strand High, Parel Vallei was again victorious, winning with 33 matches against 9. Social tennis at Parel Vallei is well supported and the courts are occupied till six o'clock in the afternoons during the tennis season. A big thank you to all the teachers and coaches for their time and effort with the coaching and organising of the tennis, it is much appreciated. 73 Hockey Hockey 2015 was weereens 'n besonderse jaar op die hokkievelde by Parel Vallei. Ons het vanjaar nie minder as 25 seuns- en dogtershokkiespanne gehad nie. Ons het gedurende die Maartvakansie ses spanne geneem na die Elsie Coetzerhokkietoernooi in Bloemfontein. Ons 0/19A dogters en 0/16A seuns het hulle onderskeie afdelings by die toernooi gewen. 33 Spelers is vanjaar gekies om Bolandspanne te verteenwoordig en Rebecca Kaps is gekies vir die 0/16 SA groep. Our u/19a girls hockey side ended the season ranked 27th in the country and the u/19a boys side 34th in the country. Over the past 30 years Parel Vallei has delivered 12 National players at school and senior level. Jade Mayne is currently vice captain of the SA Ladies side. 77 Rugby Rugby Op die rugbyfront glo ek die uitslae teen Somerset College is 'n goeie refleksie van elke wedstryd die seisoen in die verskillende ouderdoms-en graadgroepe. Ons het teen 24 verskillende skole gespeel. Daar was vier rugbytoere (twee uitgaande, twee inkomend) asook 'n ongelooflike spesiale pa- en seunskamp in Grabouw vir spanbou en motivering! Aan die bopunt van PV Rugby se verdiensteleer eindig ons onder 16-span. Hulle is die seisoen in 'n spesiale groep rugbybroeders omskep. Hulle is onoorwonne die jaar met 'n Top 20 SA Skole 0/16-plek op die SA School Sports Powerade Performance Rankings. Voorwaar die trots van Parel Vallei Rugby die laaste drie jaar! From humble beginnings and tough lessons in high school rugby and the demands thereof, to a formidable under 14 squad! An amazing inaugural tour and now future start to the season saw the boys compete on the national stage at the prestigious Kwagga Week in George. The team was rewarded after a 15 match season with a historic U/14 Top 55 SA Schools Ranking and the birth of a C team! Our 1st XV players and coaches were gutted as their season ended in another 'should have ' match at the College derby, bringing a tough under 19 season to an end. Combined ranking from SA School Sports for all teams at number 53 in South Africa! To the coaches and outgoing grade 12 group, know we are proud of you! 79 Krieket Cricket This year Parel Vallei entered seven teams into the Boland League. Three teams (u/19a, u/19b and u/15a) played in the Saturday league and the other teams in the week day league. Congratulations to the u/14a team who were unbeaten in their league. This team also toured to Worcester where they played three matches in a tournament. They won one and lost two matches. Congratulations to Ricardo Trenti who has been selected for the u/17 Boland Rural team. Harlan Greig unfortunately fell out of the final Boland u/19 group during the final selection process. A huge thank you to all our coaches for all the long hours spent on the practise fields. Thank you to the ground staff for the fantastic condition of our cricket field. 81 Netbal Netbal 2015 Parel Vallei se netbal het die afgelope jaar baie mooi verbeter. Ons het in totaal 26 spanne, wat uitstekende getalle is. Die seisoen skop af met 'n netbal-oorslaap waar spangees gebou word. Buiten die ligawedstryde deur die loop van die seisoen, is daar ook 'n interne liga waar die C-en D-spanne deur die seisoen teen mekaar meeding. Die o/15-span het vanjaar skoonskip gemaak! Ons wedstrydresultate verbeter elke jaar en die gaping tussen die tellings raak kleiner. Vir die afgelope drie jaar bied ons 'n Extreme Netball-kursus vir ALLE spelers by die skool aan. Dit word deur professionele mense aangebied en dit help ongelooflik met die ontwikkeling van noodsaaklike vaardighede.
