3 photo: Arno de la Chapelle photo: Arno de la Chapelle Turku Central Library Linnankatu Turku Turku used to be the number one town in until 1809 when Helsinki was made the capital city After the passing of the Scandinavian Classicists and the early functionalist architects Alvar Aalto and Erik Bryggmann, the city was best known for its eagerness to tear down older buildings and replace them with structures commissioned by friends of local politicians and bankers But recently Turku's name has once again begun to appear in association with quality architecture like the new city library The new extension was built alongside the old baroque-inspired building On the upper level is the central book hall, with in situ cast concrete ceiling and slender columns Dominating the whole is European oak, which has been used for wall panelling, built-in furniture and bookcases Contrasting nicely with this is the red, pre-cast concrete spiral staircase connecting the central book hall with the next level 2007 Client JKMM s City of Turku Tarja_Nurmi photo: Arno de la Chapelle Mon-Friday: Saturday: Sunday: 12-18:00 h 3

4 photo: David Uró Vilanova photo: David Uró Vilanova KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art Mannerheiminaukio Helsinki Kiasma lies in the heart of Helsinki at the foot of the Parliament building, with Saarinen's Helsinki Station on the eastside and Aalto's ia Hall on the north The concept intertwines the building's mass with the geometry of the city and landscape An implicit cultural line curves to link the building to ia Hall, similarly engaging a natural line connecting the adjacent landscape and Töölo Bay Asymmetrical in design, the museum is a slightly warped gallery of rooms Curved sequences provide mystery and surprise The visitor is confronted with a continuously changing perspective, connecting the internal and overall concept of intertwining Variation in room shape and size due to the gently curving building section allows the 25 galleries to be naturally lit, taking advantage of Helsinki's horizontal light 1998 Client Steven Holl Ministry of Public Building duv_ photo: David Uró Vilanova Tue: 10 am-5 pm, Wed-Sun: 10 am-830 pm, 4

5 photo: Arno de la Chapelle photo: Jussi Tiainen Viikki Church Agronominkatu Viikki has recently seen a revival of timber architecture in churches A new addition to this genre is the Viikki Church, distinguished by the quality of its interiors, atmosphere and details On the outside, the upper part of the building housing the church spaces, is clad with thick aspen shingles which will turn grey over time The only indication of its religious identity is a stubby belltower and slender, barely noticeable metal cross The lower, recreational section is generously windowed and clad with boards The most exciting internal spaces are of course the religious ones which can be combined by opening the sliding doors dividing them The church halls have windows about 2m high overlooking the landscape and a small garden, but the overall appearance, appropriately for a space of worship, is closed and inward-looking The most striking features of these spaces are the wall construction and the ceiling, vaguely reminiscing Nordic Christmas decorations made of straw photo: Jussi Tiainen 2005 Artist Client JKMM s Antti Tanttu Parish of Helsinki Tarja_Nurmi 5

6 photo: Voitto Niemelä photo: Voitto Niemelä Parliament Annexe Arkadiankatu Helsinki The red-granite Parliament House designed by JS Sirén and completed in 1931, is a familiar landmark for visitors to Helsinki When the old premises could no longer meet the need of the day, additional space was found on a patch of parkland next to the Parliament House, although separated from it by a road An international competition was launched in 1998, and won by Helin & Co s The annexe is divided into two distinct sections: a triangular, higher mass located by the roadside, and a low, curved wing Between these sections lies a semicircular atrium the height of the entire building, bringing light into the heart of the exceptionally deep plan The façade of the triangular section was originally intended to be glazed, but this had to be exchanged for burnt-clay brick for reasons of city scaping and security concerns In contrast, the curved section has a glazed double façade, to emphasize the open nature of Nordic democracy and its links with the public photo: Voitto Niemelä 2004 Client Helin & Co s The Finnish Parliament Anne_Veinola The ground floor of the triangular section contains facilities open to the public: a bookshop, a café and an information office Guided tours: Saturdays 11 am and 12:30 noon, Sundays 12 noon and 13:30 pm 6

7 photo: Piotr Krajewski photo: Piotr Krajewski Temppeliaukio Church Lutherinkatu Helsinki Temppeliaukio Church is a Lutheran church in the Töölö neighbourhood of Helsinki The Temppeliaukio (Temple square) was selected as a location for a church in the 1930s, but the plan by J S Siren, the winner of two competitions to design the church, was interrupted in its early stages because of WWII After the war, there was another architectural competition, which was won by Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen in 1961 For economic reasons, the suggested plan was scaled back and the interior space of the church reduced by about one-quarter of the original plan Construction finally began in February of 1968, and the rock temple was completed for consecration in 1969 The interior was excavated and built into the rock, but is bathed in natural light entering through the glazed dome The church is used frequently as a concert venue due to its excellent acoustics photo: Piotr Krajewski Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen pkrajewski_pl Monday & Tuesday: (in winter: Tuesday: :45 & ) / Wednesday: / Thursday & Friday: / Saturday: / Sunday: 11: & / Closed during religious services 7

8 photo: Rauno Träskelin photo: Rauno Träskelin Kirkkojärven koulu Kotikyläntie Espoo This school is planned for 700 pupils, including preschool and classes from 1 to 9 The school building consists of two building volumes, rising up from the landscape, back to back, like brothers The small building mass represents the primary school and the big mass the comprehensive school The building divides the plot into school yard areas for children of different ages, with favourable orientations The school yard for the primary school receives morning light The yards of the comprehensive school bathe in afternoon sun The spaces are organized into public, semi-public and private areas In the central space the surrounding landscape is emphasized From the lobby and the dining hall there is an interplay of views to the Kirkkojärvi Park and other parts of the building The brick façades utilize the versatile properties of brick, comprising a collage of different brick-laying and bonding techniques 2010 Verstas Arkkitehdit GM_ photo: Rauno Träskelin 8

11 University of Helsinki Library Kaisaniemenkatu Helsinki A building on Kaisaniemenkatu-Kajsaniemigatan was renovated into a library for four faculties of the University of Helsinki Anttinen Oiva Arkkitehdit It is very near the main railway station 11

12 HTC Helsinki Tammasaarenkatu Helsinki HTC Helsinki, 's first High Tech Center, is located on Tammasaarenkatu street in the seaside environment of Helsinki's Ruoholahti district The five HTC buildings, which were completed in 2001, were named after explorers' ships: Columbus' Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, Nordenskjöld's Vega, and Heyerdal's Kon-Tiki Some 30 companies providing 1,500 jobs operate from rented floor space totaling approximately 36,000 m2 The buildings were designed by Kai Wartiainen Oy, an architect's office, in cooperation with Evata Oy Floor area/size m² arkitektur plus development ab 12

26 photo: Jussi Tiainen Helsinki Seafarers Centre Komentosilta Helsinki The starting point in a David and Goliath juxtaposition has required a carefully considered architectural strategy The infinitely small volume of the Seafarers' Centre was in danger of being completely dominated by the crushing hectare-sized steel warehouses, and the artificial landscape of tarmac fields and container seas As a counter-point, a soft organic form language was chosen for the building, as well as a wood construction The architecture of the building could be described as contextual in the wide sense of the word: the preserved hillock, with its trees and rocks, is an essential part of the architecture of the building photo: Jussi Tiainen 2009 ARK-house s 26

27 Parliament House Mannerheimvägen Helsinki Sirén designed Parliament House in an architectural style combining Neoclassicism with early twentieth century modernism Sirén's combination of simplified columns and balusters with simplified planar geometry bears comparison to similar explorations by Erik Gunnar Asplund and Jo?e Ple?nik The exterior is red Kalvola granite The façade is lined by fourteen columns with Corinthian capitals The building has five floors, each of which is unique The floors are connected by a white marble staircase and famous paternoster lifts Most important for visitors are the main lobby, the stately Session Hall and the large Hall of State Notable later additions to the building are the library annex completed in 1978 and a separate office block, the Pikkuparlamentti (English: Little Parliament), the necessity of which was an object of some controversy, completed in Johan Sigfrid Sirén Guided tours are arranged on Saturdays at 11:00 and 12:30 and on Sundays at 12:00 and 13:30; in July and August also at 14:00 on weekdays Tuesdays and Fridays you can watch the Parliament in session from the public balcony 27

28 photo: Alvar Aalto photo: Jorge Losada House of Culture Sturenkatu Helsinki The House of Culture in Helsinki is Aalto in his 'red brick period' He achieves the free-form curves of the concert hall walls using wedge-shaped bricks, arranged variously with their shorter edge facing inside or outside the wall The impact of the solid brick walls must be seen in the context of what had gone before In, the National-Romantics had used wood and granite to show closeness to Finnish nature, while the modern movement (as elsewhere) used more abstract white plaster surfaces (which did not wear well particularly in the Finnish climate) Aalto's red brick was therefore a bigger statement than it now seems: a man-made material that keeps its individuality and local personality The House of Culture combines a concert hall (in curved red brick), an office building (a conventional rectangle in form, but with a visually striking facade brought alive by greening copper), and a lecture-theatre block connecting the two photo: Jorge Losada 1958 Alvar Aalto 28
