4 A home does not stand separate from it s surrounding. The concept of a Not So Big House requires the careful design of the transitions between interior and exterior. Moveable glass wall systems effortlessly create larger or smaller rooms as needed, and allow the most efficient use of available space. You get two completely different spatial experiences, depending upon whether the wall system is open, or closed, and to experience the difference between the two is nothing short of amazing. 12 The NanaWall SL70, provided the opportunity for this truly spectacular penthouse site to engage with the view of downtown San Francisco and open up the living space to the exterior. 16 The NanaWall allows the client to fully join the treehouse screen porch with the living space. The southeast breezes are pulled from the outside all the way through the main floor of the house, making for balmy, bug-free evenings much of the year. 22 The old hay-loft of this 40 s barn was converted to the living, dining and kitchen area of this home. The NanaWall System allowed us to open the room into this new three-story screened porch with connecting catwalk over to the studio/office building. The wall actually stays open most of the year, and the air conditioning system is seldom on. The screened room between the two stone buildings acts like the traditional dog trot buildings to increase the (passive cooling) air flow through the space. 24 We chose the NanaWall because we wanted to open up the dining area to include the beautiful view and incorporate the outdoors with the indoors. The NanaWall created a functional architectural element that allowed us to blend the beauty of the exterior with the comfort of the interior, while maintaining the structural integrity of the room. 26 When commissioned to design the typically pragmatic master bedroom addition, we decided to use what little programmatic area we were given to its fullest poetic advantage, a more with less approach. By lifting the addition on pilotis, the new bedroom is aligned with the former bedroom, creating a master suite. The terrace created beneath this addition provides shaded rest for the users of the pool and bocce ball court nearby. Folding open the large window wall (NanaWall) allows the custom bed to track out onto the elevated terrace bringing the indoors out permitting comfortable nights spent under the moon and stars.
