2 ABOUT ROMANIA AND BUCHAREST ROMANIA has one of the fastest growing economies in the EU. In T4/2016, Romania scored a 4.8% annual economic growth, ranking 1st among all European countries. The financial predictions for 2017 are indicating Romania on the top spot once again, for the second consecutive year. BUCHAREST is the cultural and financial centre of Romania. It is the most economically developed and industrialized city, generating around 1/4 of the country's GDP and of its industrial production, while only accounting for 9% of the country's population. Bucharest serves as headquarters for 186,000 firms, including nearly all large Romanian companies, with an unemployment rate of 1.8%, which is significantly lower than the national 4.6% rate. The city's strong economic growth has revitalized infrastructure and led to the development of many shopping malls, modern residential buildings and high-rise office towers.
