7 ARCHITECTURE D DAVID CHIPPERFIELD M MARC MARK Chipperfield was trained by Richard Rogers and Norman Foster. Since 1984 he is self-employed. He now maintains offices in London, Berlin and Milan, and a representative office in Shanghai. Chipperfield was the only British architect who was shortlisted to receive the contract to design the Tate modern museum in London. He designed the Figge Art Museum in Davenport and the award-winning River and Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames with green oak cladding, concrete and glass. Many of his buildings are, however, abroad, particularly in Japan and Germany. In January 2006 in Marbach am Neckar he handed over the Museum of Modern Literature as part of the German literature archive in Marbach. In 2007 he was awarded the Stirling Prize for it. In 2007 he was awarded the contract for the implementation of his award-winning design of the new building of the Museum Folkwang in Essen. He is a visiting professor at the London College of the Arts, a professor at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and holds the Mies van der Rohe Chair at the Escola Tecnica Superior Arquitectura in Barcelona. We build to protect ourselves from nature. Buildings neutralise nature. They help us to stay dry, cool and warm. Having achieved this protected condition we attempt to reintroduce, in a controlled way, the elements that we seek shelter from, for it is these elements that give significance to our life: a warm ray of light, a cool breeze, a view of the garden. Marc Mark was born in 1967 in Dusseldorf and was raised in Dusseldorf and Stuttgart. After a draftsman apprenticeship, he studied architecture at the prestigious University of Applied Sciences in Biberach / Ulm. After his graduation in 1995 he made his way south to Munich, where he completed his first years of experience from the prestigious and internationally known office Auer and Weber. His next professional post led him to Innsbruck in In 2007 Mark founded the office sphere together with Christoph Achammer (ATP), which he has led since that time as owner. Numerous won national and international competitions accompany the career path of Mark, which is characterised in particular by the execution of large and small projects. Any design or construction project must always lead to an individual solution, which receives its unique identity together with all parameters. Mark s interest in design was early and thus he succumbed gladly and often to the fascination of the coexistence of advanced technologies and the creation of atmospheres. Sphere focuses on the edge of the actual disciplines and leads the work of architects in its increasing complexity in interdisciplinary teams in a new context. The reputation derived from history as a generalist has developed into a state of mind. This attitude is the basis for communication and a guarantee for the understanding of individual loose networks of combined specialists. 8 ARCHITECTURE M MATTEO THUN R RICHARD MEIER Matteo Thun was born in 1952 in Bolzano, Italy. He studied at the Salzburg Academy under Oskar Kokoschka and completed his architectural studies in 1975, together with Adolfo Natalini, in Florence. In 1978 he moved to Milan, where he met Ettore Sottsass and worked with him. In 1981 he co-founded the Memphis Group, which significantly shaped the design movement of the eighties. In the following year he was awarded a professorship at the Vienna Academy of product design and ceramics. After he left the Memphis Group, he founded the Studio Matteo Thun in Milan in 1984 and was creative director at Swatch from 1990 to Matteo Thun won the ADI Compasso d Oro Award for design excellence three times. In 2001 the Side Hotel Hamburg, which was designed by him, was elected Hotel of the Year, the Vigilus Mountain Resort won the Wallpaper Design Award 2004 and the Radisson SAS Frankfurt was awarded the Worldwide Hospitality Award for best reopened hotel in Since December 2004, Matteo Thun has been a member of the Interior Hall of Fame in New York and a member of RIBA, the Royal Association of British Architects. Richard Meier studied architecture until 1957 at Cornell University and opened his own architecture office in Essex Fells, New Jersey in 1963 after he had worked for Marcel Breuer among others. He received orders for detached houses and villas, elegant white buildings that are not related to the so-called Bauhaus style, but to the domestic architecture of Le Corbusier, as Meier repeatedly emphasized. Almost all other buildings designed by him are connected to this style. They are decorated in white and strict geometric forms and are characterised by light-flooded interiors. One of his few deviating exceptions to his principle to build exclusively in white is the Getty Centre (also: Grotta House, Westchester House and Des Moines Art Centre addition). At the Getty Centre, the builders insisted on a colour adapting to the landscape, Meier, in contrast, on pure white. The compromise manifests itself to each visitor of the Getty Centre at first glance: All the buildings are painted in light ochre, the specially created Getty White. Lake Garda is a childhood dream: Lemons, olives, white limestone - the lake is almost a sea! Villa Eden Gardone in its private park is one of the most beautiful locations, here. MATTEO THUN We have designed our Villa with the intent to capture the magnificent light of Lago di Garda in all its dramatic hues and shades and to carefully frame the views of the Lake and the extraordinary landscape for each space in the Villa. 12 VILLA DAVID CHIPPERFIELD NORD VILLA CHIPPERFIELD NORD Following the overall design of pergola houses worldwide, we propose a sequence of closely staggered building units one behind the other for the villa. Their arrangement follows the topographical conditions and building regulations. Different long and high buildings occupied the slope and create the grandeur of the place corresponding to the ensemble. The entrance to the villa leads from the public road and leads into the pedestal-like front building where the garage and informal side entrance are housed. Integrated into this base structure, a large flight of steps leads via a two-storey pergola to the main entrance of the building. Stepping off the path, in varying form and position, sometimes facing the lake, sometimes averting the lake, the diversity of the unique landscape area unfolds to the resident. The two-story main body includes living, dining and kitchen area on the ground floor. A spacious entrance hall leads to the bedrooms above with a sublime view of the landscape. The underlying structure houses the master living area. This wing is accessed by a separate staircase. In the base of the building, side rooms are arranged. Analogous to Villa David Chipperfield, Ovest is a separate guest house with separate living and sleeping areas slightly down slope and marks the vastness of the area together with the west on a flat landscape edge. 15 VILLA DAVID CHIPPERFIELD OVEST OVERVIEW VILLA CHIPPERFIELD OVEST Based on the general design of the building, this villa is also divided into different buildings, which create a rapid succession of exciting indoor and outdoor space staggered one behind the other. Due to the position of the staggered building across the slope, the villa benefits in particular from the exposed location at the top of mountain ridge and the direct distance views of Lake Garda. The dominant main building with the upstream two-storey pergola and terrace houses a spacious dining room and kitchen on the ground floor. On the 1st upper floor, the residential area, which is divided into three zones, has direct access to the swimming pool and spa area. The upstream one-storey building structure, which is in a southern direction below the main building structure, includes a number of bedrooms, living room and side rooms. A terrace is also attached here with a shady pergola. Another building structure, which is placed north-wards in the slope, is separated from the main house by the swimming pool terrace. This part of the building, which a pergola is also presented to, serves as a spa and relaxation area. The garage is below these rooms with an informal entrance and side rooms. A spacious staircase connects the swimming pool terrace to the northern courtyard. The summer house, which is arranged on the flat terrace plateau, places the axial continuation of these steps downhill. The summer house is provided as a guest apartment, in a spacious relation to the main house. GARDEN 29

19 VILLA SPHERE NORD OVERVIEW VILLA SPHERE NORD VThe grounds of the villa, which is framed by the access road and the topography of the property, is very prominent and faces the public in connection with the club house. The place of construction, which is limited by a protected well system towards the west, is characterised by a free field of vision and its secluded outdoor area. Quasi lowered the building structure nestles into the slope, whereby the slope-side parts of the building obtain additional quality through an atrium. The position of the house also goes its own way. While the other villas in the area are distinguished by classical materials and position, the architects respond here with a self-conscious and very modern attitude. A position that is more reminiscent of loft apartments in the cities of the world and their urban context than the expected response for a building of its kind on the shores of Lake Garda. The design of the villa is based on this position to the smallest detail. The visitor or resident of this house will feel and look for the tension between the modernity of the house and the landscape at Lake Garda. Staying in the house becomes a very special experience. The building is only accessible by the underground garage. An underground car park reflecting the qualities of the living area and linking it to a space continuum. The transition from the naturally lit atrium through a parking garage to the living room is fluid. The cool materiality of the garage is continued in the living area and stands in deliberate contrast to materials. Following the underground car park the visitor reaches the spacious designed Kitchen / dining area, which is designed as a front kitchen, which connects to a room with the living area and the spa. The resulting space continuum here becomes the great, spacious experience of space. MATERIAL The design of the villa interprets the living style of the classic lofts. All materials of the facade and the floors follow the cool colour of classical Modernism. Reduction, openness and transparency accommodate the modern globetrotters who know a life of art and luxury without having to show it. The floors are coated and are monolithic in their haptics. The walls will be primed and painted, as well as the ceilings. VIEW 37

The concept of the villa is totally designed to exploit this situation. The house appears landed or secluded. Place and house experience tension through the conscious experience of apparently different approaches Hence, the, villa receives very classic sequences in function and layout. In its formal shape this appears modern and fresh, while its materiality, in turn, allows references to the history of construction at Lake Garda. The construction of the building takes into account the topography, the use of outdoor facilities is limited to the built terraces which are directly connected to the rooms of the house. The building structure stretches along the slope back and uses the highly situated plots of land. This siting allows the desirable intimacy of the complex during simultaneous views of the entire lake. In order to obtain the character of the olive grove, no topographical changes are made. Pompous entrances or gates rich in gesture can be avoided. The building is accessible through the underground car park, stair tower and lift. The opening of the underground garage, which can accommodate parking space for 3 cars, is staged by lighting from above. The guest and fitness area is located on the way to the upper floors. The main level of the villa is characterised by the central terrace landscape with pool. The adjoining leisure area with spa area is located in south-west orientation. Protected on the hills, it allows the use of the villa following the path of the sun. The ensemble is framed by the spacious lobby in the development of the north and residence areas of housing and food, the float as a bolt on the hillside to the east. 28 VILLA SPHERE SUD V VILLA SPHERE SUD The villa is located in the western portion of the property in Gardone Riviera. The allocated plot is characterised by a protection-giving, rather densely wooded hollow, allowing the protected garden and outdoor areas and preventing the neighbourhood insights into this area. The building structure, which runs in an east-west direction, uses the entire length of the exposed location at the same time for the protection and ubiquitous view and panorama. The outdoor areas are linked to the living area with the construction, which is formed as a joint here, hovering over the outdoor living and dining areas like a protective canopy. The sleeping areas of the guests and the resident are under and above the landscape joint. The siting of the building structure allows the desirable alignment of the residents bedrooms to the east. The sublime location of these rooms guarantees the intimacy of these rooms in the interior while preventing an insight into the leisure area with a lounge, garden and swimming pool. The leisure area, which is similar to a clearing, is secure and provides a spectacular view of the lake. The building is accessible through the under-ground car park, stair tower and lift. The opening of the underground garage, which can accommodate parking space for 3 cars, is staged by lighting from above. As a result, the guest area, the living level above it with well area moved to the west side and subsequently the living areas, as a highlight, are accessible by the mentioned measure. In order to keep the landscape and to avoid interventions, gardens are established very sparse following the character of the olive grove. Natural stone walls / plaster and typical local plants form the design model here. MATERIAL The design of the villa interprets vernacular buildings and the classic type of villa on Lake Garda. All materials of the facade and the floors follow the cool colour of the embankment. Natural stone walls, alternating with plaster facades and/or exposed concrete dyed beige provide the same solidity. Large format glazing is an indication of modernity. The floors are coated alternatively with olive parquet or travertine / limestone from the area. FACADE 55

32 VILLA MATTEO THUN VILLA MATTEO THUN VINTERIOR DESIGN WITH HIGH STANDARDS The main entrance of the villa is an exterior stone staircase. All floors of the villa can be reached by lift and also connected by a central staircase. The villa has two above ground and an underground floor designed in such a way that all the attributes of comfortable living can be optimally placed. The trapezoidal living area on the upper floor opens onto both sides by floor through floor-to-ceiling windows: In the front part, the view wanders to the beautiful panorama in the rear part in the olive grove. This room forms the centre from which you can reach the kitchen, next to the pantry, laterally and also experienced direct access to the family room. There is also space here for a cloakroom and a bathroom. The master bedroom and two guest rooms will be in the upper floor and are fitted with private bathroom, naturally ventilated and exposed. The lower floors are connected by a discreet staircase to the kitchen and provide easy access to storage and equipment rooms. The spacious rooms, wellness and gym area and a private wine cellar meet the highest standards of proportion and equipment, while the separate service apartment, the glass-enclosed elevator, and parking with three parking spaces guarantee maximum functionality. The villa is directed towards the northsouth and opens mainly to the east and west. Thanks to the cut and the volume the building seems to almost fly. NATURAL MATERIALS The leitmotif in every phase of the project is the sustainable development that accompanies Matteo Thun in all his projects: Both the analysis and understanding of the micro-climatic conditions, the optimal orientation and shape of the building, in the selection of local materials, the use of simple and reliable systems with low environmental impact yet highly effective work, and in the application of supervisory and regulatory systems has always followed the maxim of genius loci, the recognition of the soul of the place. Following the philosophy of the Triple Zero (0 km, 0 C02, 0 waste), only local materials were used: Stone, plaster, glass and wood. The Villa Matteo Thun is connected to the provided road network in the master plan, which in turn is connected to the major transport network. FACADE 63

35 LANDMARK MATTEO THUN LANDMARK MATTEO THUN Located east of the Villa Eden building complex, the Landmarkbuilding Matteo Thun project is nestled on a south eastern slope. In line with its ambitious pretension Le finestre sul Garda the project takes up the typical architecture of the area, combining it with modern elements to achieve perfect harmony between landscape and building. The different levels of all villas enjoy a flexible layout, allowing for individual adaptation according to personal preferences. Flooded with natural light, the lower ground floor is especially well suited for a private spa and relaxation area, as well as for a garage. The ground floor is complemented by a generous terrace and space for a garden with swimming pool. The upper level can be converted to exclusive living and sleeping quarters. 50 CLUBHOUSE MATTEO THUN C CLUBHOUSE The private Clubhouse of Villa Gardone Eden with an area of 1,050 square metres provides exclusive entertaining for the owners of the villas and apartments. Surrounded by greenery, at the foot of the area, it has a restaurant, lounge bar and a spacious terrace. A spacious, high-end SPA area connects the inner with outer spas and offers its guests an addition, private oasis. The Clubhouse takes up again the theme of transparency and interprets the colours of the environment with its external facade in a playful way. An atmosphere is created here at three levels, which adopts the lightness of the architecture by light floors, classic shapes and generous proportions and places the theme of well-being at its centre. A central lift leads to very private first and second floors via a representational reception level where the suites of the Clubhouse offer a spectacular panoramic view. The suites, which have been designed with exclusively natural materials, vary from 45 to 150 square metres and are another highlight within the context of the Clubhouse with their luxurious proportions and state-of-the-art comfort. Innovation in safety and comfort is another element that meets the highest demands. NATURAL MATERIALS The leitmotif in every phase of the project is the sustainable development that accompanies Matteo Thun in all his projects: Both the analysis and understanding of the micro-climatic conditions, the optimal orientation and shape of the building, in the selection of local materials, the use of simple and reliable systems with low environmental impact yet highly effective work, and in the application of supervisory and regulatory systems has always followed the maxim of genius loci, the recognition of the soul of the place. Following the philosophy of the Triple Zero (0 km, 0 C02, 0 waste), only local materials were used: Stone, plaster, glass and wood. The Clubhouse and the Villa Matteo Thun is connected to the provided road network in the master plan, which in turn is connected to the major transport network. 99
