There are enough groups and activities for everyone to find a place, the PTSA is very active, the academics seem at an appropriate level and it seems to be a safe environment for learning. We moved recently and made sure to buy a house in the CPHS district so our kids could stay in the local schools. Rating: 1 Posted: 6/3/2013 by parent As our daughter's senior year comes to an end, we are relieved and thankful to be leaving. College Park is a disgrace. While aware of the limitations of the huge Mt. Diablo school district in terms of class size and funding for programs, the administrations mismanagement is ridiculous. The morale is horrible for teachers and students alike. We are thankful for the few wonderful teachers that she did have and that she overcame the incompetence of the others. The last 2 years with the current principle have been especially bad. There are not enough AP classes, not enough variety in the curriculum, not enough guidance personnel and a shortage of supplies such as current textbooks. The school district is too large and too administrator heavy and this school is suffering. Our daughter goes off to college later this year and definately wont miss high school. If your child has any special needs, low motivation or anything else outside the norm, you will likely feel let-down. We transferred our child to a private high school because he had a 401 plan and wasn't getting any kind of special accommodations, even though they were specified and we met with the whole staff. I liked the teachers and most of the staff, but they are totally overwhelmed and have nothing extra to offer. Rating: 5 Posted: 8/21/2011 by parent Great School and Parent Participation. Pleasant Hill has a great neighborhood/family fee to it. The students at college park are all approachable - and that is at any grade level. Especially if your kid is in sports. My kid had senior friends when he was a freshman! As with any school, some teachers are not as good as others. But all in all most of his teachers were very good. Parent involvement is tops. Rating: 2 Posted: 8/20/2011 by parent All the standard reviews of College Park at the start of 2009 were great. Due to budget cuts class sizes have risen dramatically (how can you teach a math class with 40 students crammed in!). The average is now between 38 and 40 students per class. Homework and tests are not returned for months- -some of the teachers are absolutely unresponsive to parent inquiries and requests to discuss their child's performance. In one case when I complained to the Vice Principal that a teacher was telling the class they couldn't do anything about the way he was runnign the class becuase he had tenure. The V.P. just nodded and asked if I wanted to talk to him directly. He never called. College Park has a wonderful Eco-Tech program and wonderful caring teachers in that program but it too has suffered with overcrowding and the dynamics that come along. We are looking elsewhere...

As with any school, there are a range of skills in terms of teachers, but overall I've been very happy with the teachers at Valhalla. They do an excellent job of managing with the larger class sizes that are the norm these days, and an excellent job of dealing with students of differing skills, especially at the upper grades. Differentiated math and english made a big difference in my older child's success at the school. My younger child is very shy, but had no problem feeling at home at the school and got plenty of attention from teachers. I highly recommend the school. Two months later at a new school, in a new district, it was an amazing difference. The staff did not have the skills to analyze academic performance or to implement it. The student teacher ratio is too high. The District has a low rate of children exiting from Special Education after years in the district. The leadership at the school engaged in a confrontational style and retaliated against us for advocating for our child. The school told us that our child did not perform well because of being exposed to other languages growing up. The leadership is out of touch. Rating: 5 Posted: 7/16/2013 by parent I teach in another district and was not thrilled when we bought a home in MDUSD. I had planned on taking my children to my school/district. But after the wonderful things I have heard about Valhalla from colleagues, I decided to put my child in our neighborhood school. I have attended numerous IEP's and parent meetings over the years as a teacher, but experienced my first as a parent at Valhalla. I was ready to argue and fight for my child; and was skillfully disarmed by the principal. She had my child's best interests at heart, and when we did have a disagreement she was very willing to do what was needed to please us as the parents, as well as keep our child's goals top priority. From what I have seen at Valhalla, they have the whole child in mind, creating a place for children to learn and learn to enjoy the process. I hope what I have seen so far continues.

I was really worried about the rates like most parents but Valley View is just like any middle school. I prefer Valley View because every child is treated the same and it is a no tolerance school. My daughter is a beautiful and popular girl and was bullied so bad I had to transfer her to another school. I hope the school comes up with more programs on how to stop bullying. Students in band classes (cadet, symphonic, jazz, and orchestra) excel due to the superior tutelage of Nicholas Cooper, the strong support of the administration (principal Ean Ainsworth) & increasing help from impressed parents. This remarkable program is two years old and growing rapidly. If you want to see your child expand his/her horizons in music appreciation and skills, discipline, and teamwork, then get your child in VVMS band. Rating: 1 Posted: 6/13/2013 by parent This school has really gone downhill the past few years, unfortunately. Partly it is because of the school district, which isn't the fault of the school. One problem was the closure of another middle school, and when that happened Valley View took in about a third of those students, which didn't help the school at all. I had to take my child out of here because of bullying and just a bad environment. Most of the teachers are good teachers, the principal seems fine, and there are some involved parents, but the kids are the problem. It's a bad influence for my kid, and that's why I have taken him out. He is doing so much better now and is in an environment with nice kids, so I'm glad we did what we did. It's unfortunate. I have other younger children, and they will definitely NOT being going here!!
