6 In Remembrance Terry NIELSEN: June 25, 1965 to July 27, 2013 Terry is survived by loving wife, Tanya Harmon, step-sons Jonathon and Cody, father Butch Nielsen and his partner Hilary, mother Suzan Clancy, sister Kelly Nielsen, brother and sister Kelly James and Keshia Clancy, and nephew Keifer. Terry was a passionate advocate of fish farming as an essential alternative to wild stock fishing. He loved surfing the breaks around Tofino, and was a gifted and avid runner. He had competed in the Royal Victoria Marathon. He gave tremendously of himself to his local and global communities through his involvement in the Strathcona Sunrise Rotary, where he served as President from 2012 to Terry's passing is of particular interest to our Kiwanis Club because his father, Butch Nielsen was a three time President of the Kiwanis Club of Victoria, 2002,2003 and Butch contributed very much time and energy to our Club, especially in our Wheels Program, the Kiwanis Emergency Youth Shelter and Kiwanis House. Butch and Hilary were also responsible for the publishing of our Club's newsletter, The Builder, for many years. The members of the Kiwanis Club of Victoria extend heartfelt sympathy to the Nielsen family on the passing of Terry. Club Speaker Author Linda Foubister Spoke about Myths of Victoria Linda said that 'Myths' are generally meaningful stories. Myths can help build community in three ways: by developing shared understanding, linking to human nature, and sharing action. Foubister talked about the myths of the earliest inhabitant of Victoria. The Coast Salish people told stories about Hayls the Transformer who changed people and animals into their present forms. According to myth, a transformer rock at Harling Point was once a seal harpooner. When James Douglas arrived in 1843 to start the construction of a Hudson's Bay fort in Camosack harbour, a comet appeared for five nights. Comets have had mythical implications since ancient times. Victoria's architecture features foliate faces, suggesting the link between nature and humans. These faces can be found on the Temple Building at 525 Fort Street, the Pemberton Building at 1000 Government Street, and the Parliament Buildings. Foubister ended her presentation with a quote about how similar the message in ancient time stories is to today's message about caring for our environment. Club members thanked Linda Foubister for her very interesting and informative presentation. For further information on Victoria's Myths, Foubister's book, The Key to Mystic Victoria, can be found on the website:
