1 Research and Innovation Counsellor, EU Delegation to Brazil Piero Venturi is the EU Research and Innovation Counsellor for Brazil and Latin America. He has a degree in Agricultural Science and a PhD in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Bologna. He worked as researcher at Polytechnic University of Madrid, Wageningen Agricultural University and Bologna University, dealing with energy and non-food crops production and biobased products chains modelling. Piero worked in the Directorate for Agriculture, Food and Biotechnology - DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission dealing with policies and projects on bioeconomy. He has been active member in Working Groups on this subject with US, China, Russia, Latin America, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. He has been lecturing on Energy Integrated Systems and Agricultural Mechanization at the University of Bologna and on Agroenergy at the University Menendez y Pelayo of Madrid. He published over 80 articles in scientific journals. European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas is the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, since Between 2011 and 2014 he was Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Portugal and Member of the Portuguese Parliament. Between 2010 and 2011 Carlos Moedas was Senior Economic Advisor of the Portuguese Social Democratic Party (PSD). He is founder of Crimson Investment Management, worked as Managing Director and Member of the Executive Committee Board of Aguirre Newman as well as Consultant on mergers and acquisitions, Deutsche Bank and Eurohypo Investment Bank. Between he was Investment Banking Associate at Goldman Sachs. Carlos Moedas has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a degree in civil engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico de Lisboa, Portugal. 2 Rector of the University of Sao Paulo Dr. Marco Antonio Zago is a professor at USP since He graduated in medicine at the Ribeirão Preto Medical School, University of São Paulo, in 1970, obtained master's and doctorate in Clinical Medicine by the same faculty, respectively, in 1973 and He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (of which he was director) and fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He was president of the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), between 2007 and 2010, and USP Research pro-rector from 2010 to He received the Great Cross and the Commendation of the National Order of Scientific Merit awarded by the President of Republic, and the Paulista Medal for Scientific Merit awarded by the State of São Paulo. He is the coordinator of Ribeirão Preto Cellular Therapy Center (Cepid) supported by FAPESP since 2001 and was clinical director of the Hospital of Ribeirão Preto Clinics and member of the National Biosafety Committee (CTNBio). Professor at the University of São Paulo and coordinator of Institute of Brazil Europe Studies (IBE) Prof. Martucci graduated in Electrical Engineering and Physics from the University of Sao Paulo. He has master s degree and doctorate in electrical engineering, from the same university. He has experience in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Electronic Automation of Electrical and Industrial Processes, acting on the following topics: open systems, automation systems, distributed systems, Future Internet, mobile systems, distributed architecture, banking automation and engineering computing. 3 European Research Council Executive Agency Massimo Gaudina is a European official since 1994 and is presently detached to the European Research Council (ERC) in Brussels, where he is the Head of Unit in charge of communications. Together with his team, Massimo is in charge of promoting, in and outside Europe, both the funding opportunities and the achievements of the ERC. He has previously worked in several departments of the European Commission in Brussels, including: the Secretariat General, as member of the Task Force on the future of Europe and on the EU Constitutional Treaty; DG Education and Culture, as information officer for the very popular Erasmus programme for students mobility; DG Communication, as head of sector for communication campaigns. He has also been head of communication section at the Commission Representation in Italy. Before working for the Commission, he was free-lance journalist in Italy, in the field of international relations, education/research and sport. He has been lecturer on EU affairs and on communication at different organizations and Universities, mainly in Italy. ERC Grantee Prof. José Iriarte is an archaeologist and archaeobotanist with a strong track record of research on human environmental interactions and the development of agricultural economies in lowland South and Central America. He obtained his PhD in Anthropology at University of Kentucky, was a Mellon Foundantion post-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and he is Professor of Archaoelogy since 2005 at the Department of Archaeology, University of Exeter. He has extensive experience in directing and participating in a wide range of international multidisciplinary projects in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, French Guiana, Mexico and Uruguay. The multi-proxy, cross-disciplinary nature of his projects, which integrate archaeology, palaeoecology, soil science, and modern ecology, has allowed him to explore human environmental interactions in depth and have provided clearer evidence on the timing and nature of human impact on tropical and subtropical ecosystems. Iriarte directs the University of Exeter Archaeobotany and Paleoecology Laboratory, the only European archaeobotanical laboratory which has the expertise to carry out microfossil botanical analysis of phytoliths and starch grain analyses in the Neotropics. He also coordinates the Centre for the Archaeology of the Americas at University of Exeter, United Kingdom. P a g e 3

4 Department of International Relations of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) Since 2009, she is Senior Scientific Officer at the International Relations Department, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Ministry of Education and Science, Portugal. Responsible for FCT participation on EU projects for international cooperation, she is also the Portuguese Delegate to the European Strategic Forum for International Science and Technology Cooperation (SFIC). On EU level she is responsible for FCT participation on the Standing committee for Agricultural Research (SCAR). She is also responsible for FCT participation in other geographical EU instruments with Latin-America and Caribbean. Former Agrarian Sciences researcher since 1993, she worked in several research centers, universities and SMEs, with participation several European Commission funded projects since 5th Framework Programme. Center of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon Soraya Nour Sckell is from São Paulo. She has been studying and researching in Europe since She graduated in Law from the University of São Paulo (USP, 1992) and completed a PhD degree at the same university (1999, with research at the University of Munich ) in International Law. She completed a Magistra Artium (bachelor s and master s degrees) in Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science at the University of Frankfurt am Main (2001) and a French-German PhD degree in Philosophy at the Paris Ouest Nanterre University and the University of Frankfurt am Main (2012). She has received several fellowships from French and German foundations, including DAAD, Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Conseil Régional d'île-de- France, and made Post-Doc research at the Universities of Frankfurt am Main, Berlin (HU), Nanterre and Saint Louis. She has been actively collaborating with European and Brazilian researchers in international scientific meetings, research projects and publications in major international scientific journals. She is the vice-president of the Association Humboldt France and received the German- French Friendship Prize by the German Ambassador in Paris (2009). Soraya has taught Roman Law, Philosophy of Law and International Law at the University of São Paulo, Philosophy at the University of Munich and at the Collège International de Philosophie de Paris, Constitutional Law at the University of Metz and History of Law at the University of Lille. In 2012, she came to Portugal to teach International Law at the University Portucalense and since 2013 she has been an FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) Investigator at the Centre of Philosophy of the University of Lisbon. 5 Embassy of France to Brazil Dr. Philippe Martineau was trained as a chemist and holds a PhD in materials sciences from the University of Bordeaux, as part of a partnership with AVCO Corporation US on the development of composite materials based on titanium matrix, for applications in space area. Besides his knowledge in the field of composite materials, he has become a specialist in innovation. The successive positions he has held in several countries, such as Brazil, India or China for example, have enabled him to acquire a very important experience in international cooperation in the fields of research, innovation and university. He is the author of over a hundred scientific, technological and economic publications, author of a dozen books, organizer / co-organizer of more than a hundred national and international conferences and guest lecturer in numerous international scientific events. Dr Martineau is currently Deputy Councillor of Cooperation and Cultural Action to the Embassy of France in Brazil and is particularly in charge of scientific, technological innovation and university bilateral cooperation. Hungarian Rectors Conference (HRC) in Brazil Dr. Balázs Vince Nagy is the representative of the Hungarian Rectors Conference (HRC) in Brazil. He is a senior lecturer at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in Hungary at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Mechatronics, Optics and Engineering Informatics. In Brazil, he works as a visiting professor at the University of São Paulo in Brazil, in the Vision Laboratory of the Psychology Institute. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and completed post-graduate studies in Economics and Illumination Engineering. Joint Research Centre Laura Maragna is the Joint Research Centre (JRC) local agent in Brazil, based at the European Union Delegation in Brasília. She studied International Relations with post-graduation studies in Political Science and Environmental Science Management. Over the last six years, Laura has worked for United Nation's agencies and other foreign representations in Brazil. P a g e 5

6 German Embassy in Brasília Since 2014, Mr. Schröder has been working at the German Embassy in Brasilia as the Head of the Science & Education Department. He initiates and facilitates cooperation between German and Brazilian partners in science and higher education. Mr. Schröder is an employee of the German Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and an expert in the field of vocational education. For the Ministry he went on several missions aboard Italy, Japan and South Korea. Mr. Schröder is graduated in Economics at the University of FU Berlin, Germany. Swissnex Brazil Since 2015, Stephanie is working as Junior Project Manager for swissnex Brazil at the São Paulo office. Swissnex Brazil is a Swiss initiative to form a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in science, education, art and innovation. It connects ideas with people, highlights the best of Swiss and Brazilian ingenuity and creates opportunities for networking among our diverse group of professional contacts in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and beyond. She was the Assistant to the Support Foundation CEO at Avenir Suisse in Zürich, Switzerland. The Think Tank s aims are to demonstrate a need for political action and help solve problems by means of initiatives and proposals, by performing analysis based on scientific principles, organising conferences and participating in public debates. 7 European Commission, European Institute of Innovation and Technology and Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions Bodo Richter is Deputy Head of Unit Innovation in education, European Institute of Innovation and Technology and Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions. He joined the European Commission in He has worked in the Directorates-General for Employment and Social Affairs as well as Education and Culture in the areas of training, communication, innovation, higher education and international organisations. Prior to taking his current assignment as deputy head of unit, Bodo was in charge of international education and training policy development with industrialised countries, in particular the EU-U.S. and EU-Canada co-operation agreements as well as the co-operation programmes with Australia and New Zealand. Currently, his main task is to drive the political strategy of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA) as well as related aspects in the fields of mobility, training and career development of researchers, and to supervise the Research Executive Agency for all aspects related to the implementation of the MSCA and their legacy. He studied at the University of Mannheim (Germany) and at the University of Waterloo (ON, Canada), specialising in French, Italian and German languages and literatures. Prior to joining the European Commission, Bodo worked for the German Ministry of Education on EU programmes in the fields of education, training, science and research and was a high school teacher and university research assistant in France, Canada and Germany. European Commission, Research Executive Agency, Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions Brito Ferreira is Head of sector at the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission dealing with Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) and promoting international and inter-sector collaboration in research and innovation, within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions (MSCA). He obtained his Engineering degree in material science from the University of Pierre et Marie Curie France and a PhD in solid state chemistry from the University of Bordeaux I France. He worked as a researcher for Corning France. He joined the European Commission in Brussels in 2007 and has been working with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions since that time. P a g e 7

8 Finland s Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, Department of Higher Education and Science Policy Tiina Vihma-Purovaara (born 1961) has a background at the Institute of Art Research at the University of Helsinki. She is working at the moment as a Counsellor of Education in the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Finland. Before working at the Ministry Tiina was a Manager of EU-affairs at the Academy of Finland (Research Councils) and prior to that working at the Theatre Academy (now an Academy of the University of the Arts) for nearly ten years. At the Ministry her main duties consist of the coordination of international cooperation activities of the Department for Higher Education and Science Policy, initiatives concerning the external dimension of European Research Area and bilateral collaboration with countries outside Europe (especially China and Brazil). She is a member of the European Research Committee subgroup Strategic Forum for International STI Cooperation SFIC and at the moment chairing the SFIC Brazil group. Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) Isabela Nogueira is Adjunct Professor of International Political Economy and Socioeconomic Development at the Institute of Economics, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). She conducts research on subjects such as socioeconomic inequalities, the political economy of wealth concentration in developing countries, South-South development cooperation and rural development in Africa. Most of her empirical research is concentrated on countries like China, Brazil and Mozambique. She has previously worked as lecturer and postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Socioeconomics, University of Geneva, and as visiting researcher both at Tsinghua University in Beijing and at the Institute of Social and Economic Research in Maputo. In Finland, Dr. Nogueira has worked as visiting lecturer of International Economics at Aalto University and as a consultant for development cooperation on projects financed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She holds a PhD in Economics from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and a MA in Political Science from University of São Paulo. P a g e 8

9 Wallonie-Bruxelles International, Brasil Julie Dumont works as Scientific Liaison Officer in Brazil for Wallonie- Bruxelles International, the international relations department of the french part of the country, fostering R&D cooperation between Brazil and Wallonie-Bruxelles. She worked previously as lawyer specialized in intellectual property and licensing in the Technology Transfer Office of the Université Libre de Bruxelles. She has a degree in Law from this latter university, oriented toward international and intellectual property law. Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), International Affairs Office As the Head of International Affairs at the Research foundation Flanders (FWO), Dr. Ir. Isabelle Verbaeys defines and leads FWO s international department, facilitating and coordinating all international mobility programs including several bilateral agreements and an EU COFUND mobility programme. She started working as a Senior Science Administrator at FWO in 2011 and previously worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the medicine department of the KU Leuven, campus Kortrijk. She obtained her PhD in 2009 for her research in metabolism and the neuroendocrine regulation of the energy balance at the latter university where she also graduated as a bio engineer in Before starting her PhD research she worked abroad for several years in a number of different areas including industry and non-profit. Innovation Centre Denmark Stina Nordsborg is Deputy Head of Innovation Centre Denmark in São Paulo. Stina came to São Paulo in January 2015 from a position as senior advisor and Head of secretariat of EuroScience Open Forum Europe s largest general science conference, hosted in Copenhagen in She has worked for 10 years with research institutions, public authorities, NGO s and private companies to enhance Denmark s position as a knowledge society and to create the best conditions for innovation and growth. She has profound knowledge of science, innovations and higher education policies and institutions in Denmark. Innovation Centre Denmark in São Paulo works to establish closer cooperation between Danish and Brazilian businesses, research and innovation actors in order to strengthen Danish research, education, innovation and policy development. 10 University of São Paulo s Institute of Chemistry Prof. Daniel Rodrigues Cardoso is Professor Doctor at the University of São Paulo s Institute of Chemistry in São Carlos. He graduated in chemistry at the University of São Paulo in 2000 and holds a PhD in analytical chemistry (2004) from the same university in collaboration with Centre for Advanced Food Studies, which today is part of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He did his PostDoc with the same research group in Copenhagen, holding an assistant professor position from the former Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University - KVL, Denmark. Prof. Cardoso has experience in chemistry with emphasis on food chemistry and analytical chemistry. He has been working on the following topics: food metabolomics, mechanistic food chemistry, and spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques such as laser flash photolysis, magnética ressonante (NMR and EPR), mass spectrometry, and stopped-flow kinetics. EURAXESS Links Brazil Country Representative Charlotte Grawitz is a French economist, specialised in development. She has been working in Brazilian affairs since 2002, when she first came to Brazil to conduct research on the sugar market for her Master s thesis. Since then, she has held various positions in Brazil and France related to international cooperation. Since February 2013, Charlotte has been in charge of setting up and managing the new EURAXESS Links network in Brazil. P a g e 10
