4 PRESIDENT S REPORT 2016 Jeff Shaw FSLL SLL President May Continuing the momentum of the UNESCO International Year of Light last year, I am pleased to report that the Society has had a very successful and engaging This is reflected in the fact that membership has continued to grow, seeing the Society reach record highs with over 3,500 members internationally, as well as four new Sustaining Members. SLL took part in and hosted a number of notable events throughout the year, starting with the International Year of Light closing ceremony, held in Mexico in February. At this, the Society s efforts to raise public awareness of lighting and, in particular, the Night of Heritage Light (NoHL) were referenced throughout. SLL Coordinator, Juliet Rennie and my predecessor, Liz Peck represented the Society in panel discussions and delivered a presentation dedicated to NoHL, in which she outlined the importance of inspiring the next generation of lighting professionals, and of providing public benefit through engaging and informative events. In March we enjoyed the 14th annual Ready Steady Light (RSL), with 15 teams taking part. Ready Steady Light is a celebration of the lighting profession in its purest form, offering those within the industry the opportunity to get back to basics, whilst providing the students at Rose Bruford College some hands on experience with practicing lighting designers. As Patron of the UNESCO International Year of Light in 2015, HRH the Duke of York KG, attended a number of celebratory events, including the SLL s Fresnel Lecture, engaging with the scientific, commercial and creative lighting industries. In recognition of his contribution, the SLL offered the Duke an Honorary Fellowship of the Society, which was graciously accepted. In April, representatives from the SLL travelled to Buckingham Palace in order to present the Fellowship to the Duke in person also saw an official CIBSE region established in the UAE. This coincided with the SLL Secretary, Brendan Keely recruiting a number of new members to the Society whilst attending the inaugural LuxLive Middle East in April, alongside SLL volunteers and the UAE Regional Representative. The Middle East offers a huge opportunity for growth for CIBSE and the Society working together, and this was further exploited with the Secretary, CIBSE staff and volunteers attending Light Middle East in October, at which we hosted the first ever Ready Steady Light to be held outside of the UK, which was a great success with over 60 participants. In May the SLL was presented the Heritage Project of the Year award for NoHL at the Lighting Design Awards. This was a true honour for the Society and a wonderful recognition of the efforts of the volunteers and CIBSE staff that made this event such a success, only to be improved in September, when the Society was awarded Best Creative Lighting Event of the Year at the darc awards. In addition to the regular events which the Society holds, including RSL, the Young Lighter of the Year and the Masterclass series, I would like to thank the Regional Representatives for their ongoing work and dedication, providing informative events around the UK and beyond. One of the key aims for the Society is to provide lighting education, both for industry professionals and for the public and without the support of the Regional Representatives, this would not be possible. A resounding highlight for 2016 was NoHL II and Pockets of Light. A group of SLL Volunteers worked with four local schools in York, running lighting workshops
5 for students aged 8 to 16. The students were asked to explore light and lighting design and to come up with schemes for four historical sites within York City Centre. Winning designs were then selected and made into a reality during the Illuminating York light festival. This event enabled the SLL to demonstrate the exciting potential of light as an art and a science to the next generation, and to engage with the public. It was truly inspiring to see the enthusiasm and passion displayed by the students and volunteers involved and I would like to thank all of those who gave their time to make this event such a wonderful success, with special thanks to Dan Lister, Liz Peck, Helen Marsh, David Battersby and Gethyn Williams. The SLL Technical & Publications committee, Chaired by Simon Robinson, continues prolifically to produce new lighting guidance, as well as updating the existing guidance saw the publication of the revised LG6: The Exterior Environment, as well as the brand new LG14: Control of Electric Lighting. Lighting Research & Technology continues to receive high quality papers on a huge variety of topics, with eight editions published throughout The combination of free Factfiles, the Lighting Guides, LR&T and the array of events which the Society runs really does reflect the key aims of the SLL and CIBSE to develop and share knowledge of light and lighting, for both industry and public benefit. As well as all the Regional Representatives, committee chairs and volunteers, I would also like to thank Brendan and the SLL coordinator, Juliet Rennie, for their tireless work and for putting up with me over the year. I have no doubt that our membership numbers would not be nearly so healthy without their efforts. I would like to also wish my successor, Richard Caple all the best for his year as President and I very much look forward to hearing his inaugural address I am confident that I leave the Society in very safe hands. Finally, I would like to give my thanks to all of you for your continued support and dedication to the Society. SOCIETY EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES In addition to the events outlined in the President s Report, please see below: In February, the Society also held an event in partnership with the Institute of Physics and the charity, Solar Aid entitled, Safe Lighting for All: Eradicating the Kerosene Lamp. In March, the SLL Secretary, Brendan Keely attended Light + Build in Frankfurt alongside Liz Peck. Once again, October proved to be one of the busiest months in the Society s calendar, with the third Jonathan Speirs Memorial Lecture, with speakers including Malcolm Innes, Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University and Cashel Brown, 2014 recipient of the Jonathan Speirs Scholarship fund. Following this, the Masterclass series, Human Responses to Light was launched in Dublin with the Society s Sponsors in Partnership, Holophane, Thorn, Trilux and Xicato. The Masterclasses continue to be very well received by both the members and the public. The Society returned to LuxLive in November, hosting the 22nd Young Lighter of the Year final with the winner, Sofia Tolia announced at the Lux Awards. NoHL was also Highly Commended in the Outdoor Lighting category of the Lux Awards. The Society s Regional Representatives also held events throughout the year, covering topics such as the launch of new guidance, dark skies, computer aided daylight planning and TM30 amongst many others. SLL organise a number of events which are open to all, designed to benefit the Society s members, the lighting community and the public at large.

8 FINANCE REPORT 2015/2016 COMPARISON 2016 has been another positive year for the SLL, maybe a little quieter than 2015, but one that prepares us for the years ahead. We ended the year with a surplus of 29,703, very significantly ahead of budget. As a charitable body, our financial objective is not one of profit making, but rather one of ensuring a financially stable platform that enables our works to the benefit of all, thus this positive outturn requires explanation. In the past we received income for our publication sales in one lump sum in the January of the year after. In 2017 we are moving to an arrangement where we pay the full cost on production, and receive the income at the point of sale. To prepare for this, 2016 s figures show the extraordinary inclusion of both 2015 and 2016 publication income. As a quick overview of other items: Publication income is still stronger than budget; we saved cost when we were unable to deliver the Trotter Patterson as planned, but incurred it with the successful NoHL II in York and attending Light Middle East with its attached RSL event.
