1 Rochester CANstruction Rochester November 5-16, 2012 Bausch & Lomb Winter Garden CANstruction is the most unique food charity in the world! It is a nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions to construct fantastic, giant sized structures made entirely out of canned food. In each city, after the structures are built and the winners are declared, the creations go on view to the general public as giant art exhibits. At the close of the competitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to the local food banks for distribution to community emergency feeding programs. Thousands of hungry people are fed, a greater awareness of the issues surrounding hunger is brought home to the public, and a spotlight is placed on the design and construction industry giving back to the communities it helps build. CANstruction has grown to become one of the largest contributors to food banks in the world. Since its humble beginning in 1992, CANstruction has held design/build competitions in over 150 cities world-wide, donating millions of pounds of canned food to alleviate the plague of hunger and malnutrition. November 2012 In This Issue We cannot measure CANstruction s success merely based on pounds of food raised alone, but also on its impact on hunger issues. Each year, over 30,000 volunteers come together to make these CANstruction events a success. That s 30,000 hunger relief ambassadors released into their respective communities with heightened awareness of the consequences of hunger and malnutrition. CANstruction is not an end, but a beginning of a larger ambitious effort to relieve hunger. The creative and design communities play a pivotal role in this larger endeavor, such as developing new ways to broadly communicate quality nutritional practices, and seeking and nurturing partnerships with organizations and individuals who propose and advocate innovative hunger relief strategies, showing that... 3 Volunteer Committees - Get Involved! Listed are the committees within the chapter. If you would like to get involved, aia@aiaroch. org and we will forward your contact information to the director who chairs that committee. ERA - An associate member normally heads this commission which serves the need of associates members and interns with programs such as exam review courses, and emerging architects activities. Communication - This commission coordinates communication within the organization and produces external communications such as press pieces and releases. It oversees and updates major communication media such as the newsletter, web site, Facebook, etc. Education - This committee traditionally draws young members and is very active. They administer the Explorer Scouts program, provide public education, coordinate shadowing in local firms, and work with the Architectural Foundation of Greater Rochester to acquire scholarship funds and select deserving recipients. Governmental Affairs - If the political process is of interest to you this commission would be a good fit. This, usually small, group works to advocate for the architect and good design. They actively lobby at the local, state and national levels. Membership - Recruiting, enriching and maintaining membership. This is accomplished with outreach, surveys, annual shows, focus groups and producing the annual directory. Practice & Design - This commission supports practice & design by coordinating the chapter s traveling display and by planning & conducting the annual design awards competition. AIA Rochester Featured Building Architect: Pardi Partnership Architects Location: Your Local Pharmacy This project is a neighborhood pharmacy on a corner in the inner city. The project s design goal was to create a building that would be considered a Gem in its community - a facility that would, through the use of basic construction materials, create an elegant look that would elevate the appearance of the local streetscape while providing much needed services to an under served segment of the urban community in a personalized way through a well organized interior floor plan. Security is perceived as a problem in the Inner City. Typical solutions present a fortress mentality to the street - little windows, barred doors and opaque steel rolldown shutters. Our solution was diametrically opposed to that formula - we incorporated significant wall areas of glass in combination with high level of lighting to create a secure and visible workplace in the neighborhood. The additional and more significant benefit of this approach is that it allows the community to see what the facility is about, making a strong connection to the public way, and inviting local patrons into the well lit and modernly appointed interior through these design features. 3
4 Governor Signs AIANYS Bill on Design Professional Service Corporation Victory Governor Cuomo just signed into law our bill allowing the creation of a design professional service corporation (DPC) without having to dissolve the existing professional corporation. Under the DPC statute, design firms are allowed to authorize an equity interest of up to 25% to non-licensed professionals. This just signed bill clears the way to transition to that status without having to dissolve and liquidate all the assets and liabilities of the existing firm. This bill came about as a direct result of our Lobby Day meetings with the sponsors - Assemblyman Ron Canestrari and Senator Ken LaValle. ========================== November CES Program Friday, November 30, 2012 Alfred State College 1:00-2:30 PM LU s: 1.5 HSW Cost: Free Roger Brown, AIA will be giving a session on the critical role that architectural design plays in the creation of a strong, vibrant, sustainable public realm. Learning Objectives: 1) Learn about what the public realm is, why it is important in the built environment, its critical elements, and how it is being threatened. 2) Learn how the architectural design of buildings affects the design success or failure of the public realm. 3) Learn what Form Based Code is and how it can be an effective tool in creating a successful public realm. 4) Learn about design guidelines and design standards and the design principles that they embody that are being used in successful architectural design. Originally built over 100 years ago, it has been a longstanding but somewhat hidden gem one of Frank Lloyd Wright s famous Prairie Style home designs. Through the amazing effort and dedication of the home s most recent owners, Fran Consentino and Jane Parker, the home has re-emerged as a crisp and eye-popping design statement. Wright is universally acclaimed as an architectural genius who influenced modern design at its dawning, He was well before his time in creating enduring works of architecture that have become American icons Falling Water, Taliesin (East and West) and the Guggenheim Museum, to name a few. Here in Rochester he designed a home for Edward Boynton and his daughter Beulah. I visited the house recently on the occasion of its rededication. Having been to the home several times over the years, I was stunned by its transformation. The building stands in stark contrast to its more traditional neighbors. A low-slung roof cantilevers dramatically in all directions above a spacious elevated terrace. A band of leaded art-glass windows, deeply set back from the eaves, causes the roof to appear as if suspended in mid-air. What continues to amaze me is that this dramatic work of modern architecture was built in Before beginning his design work for the Boyntons, Wright came to Rochester to help select a site. Eventually Boynton purchased four city lots on East Boulevard that would provide space for an expansive garden with a retangular reflecting pool, landscaping and tennis courts that would aid in creating the open Prairie feel for which Wright was looking. He proceeded with the design, investing untold hours of his personal time on the site, even during construction. The cost of the house and site was $ 55,000, a large sum of money for the time. There are many aspects to the design that make it significant. The leaded glass windows have a recognizable pattern unique to the house. Wright also designed architectural furniture for the house, vital to the total effect. While most of the living room furniture has disappeared, the dining room retains a complete set of 17 pieces. Since 1968 it has been protected by covenants held by the Landmark Society, which was made available to each new set of owners. Over the years, the condition of the house began to suffer. The stucco plaster cladding showed signs of progressive deterioration, from the inside out. One of the main ridge beams was sagging of an unknown reason. The interior plumbing was antiquated and became an obstacle to anyone wanting to live in the house the way the architect had originally envisioned. In 2009, Fran Cosentino and Jane Parker purchased the Wright-designed home. They were dedicated both to preserving an important part of Wright s legacy and to creating an exciting residence for their own use. While they had taken on several significant restoration projects in the past, they could not have imagined the extent of this one. As design work unfolded, the scope of the renovation grew. The harsh effects of more than 100 Rochester winters combined with dry rot and termite and carpenter ant damage, resulted in extensive structural problems. It became apparent that much of the house would need to be dismantled and remade. Even so, they became more dedicated to the task and determined to allow the building to be reborn. They retained a skilled team of local professionals led by Bero Associates and architect John Page, architectural historian Jean France, and landscape architect Mark Bayer. Working together, they assembled an extensive and collaborative team. They set about revising years of deferred maintenance and structural damage. In the end, more than 100 artisans, restoration construction tradespeople and design specialists had touched this house, each making a significant contribution to the project. I asked Wayne Goodman, executive director of Landmark Society of Western New York, what he thought was the most remarkable feature of the project. For me the most remarkable feature is the fact that the owners had the resolve to do the project in such a comprehensive manner, not just for themselves, but for the community, he says. The house was built as a home, and it is still a home. From the momement one walks in the door, the overall sense is unmistakably Wright, but it also unmistakingly a home and has a warm and welcoming feel. The task was extraordinarily difficult to accomplish. Architectural historian France perhaps sums up the unique significance of the design best: The Boynton House has two unique attributes that set it off from Wright Prairie houses elsewhere, she says. Many of them, designed as residences, have been refurbished as museums. This is still a private home and always has been. Others have lost all their Wright furniture; this one has not. The Boynton House is a survivor, a living demonstration of the best in American architecture, still relevant after 100 years, forever the work of a genius. Few undertakings have given me as much pleasure as seeing this remarkable transformation. Here in Rochester we have more than our share of distinctive buildings that have been appreciated and renewed. Yet few restoration projects have been undertaken with such a generous and open heart. This amazing work of architecture was recognized by its owners, invested in and restored for all to appreciate a true gift to our community.
