The President s Design Award is Singapore s highest honour accorded to designers and designs from all design disciplines. 2 Opening hours: 9.00am 8.00pm daily For more information, please visit CALL FOR PAPERS: Architecture Conference 2014 In conjunction with ACA16 Kuala Lumpur RejuveNATION, Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM) is organizing Architecture Conference 2014 which will be held on Wednesday 25th June The full day Conference is focusing on the three broad domains of interest that shape current and future architectural education and practice. The Architecture Conference 2014 is delighted to invite you to participate by submitting the Abstract of Paper relating to three broad domains of interest that shape the current and future architectural education and practice: Integration of BIM in the architectural workplace Fate of rural places and small towns amidst urbanization Dichotomy of technology and humanity Integration of BIM into Architecture Education With rapid changes in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) that facilitates the design process in architectural practice, both architectural education and practice have been presented with new challenges and opportunities. One of the central issues is the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the architecture discipline. The concept of BIM, introduced in the 1970s, has been implemented in the recent decade, and the expectancy of the construction industry with BIM is very high especially with the Clients who are attracted to the efficiency and accuracy accorded by BIM compared to the traditional CAD software. The industry is anticipating that future architects to be conversant with BIM, so that they can fully harness the power of BIM in their workplaces. Taking into view that at present most architecture students are overly dependent on computer software resulting in preoccupation with presentation skills rather than developing the thought processes and problem solving skills, the issue of how to integrate BIM into the architecture education curriculum so that BIM becomes a tool that help realize the ideas behind the design is critical. This conference addresses the contestation, complexities, and opportunities of integration BIM into architectural education and practice, and teaching pedagogies that will harness positive impact for the architecture fraternity. Urban Migration and Rural Places Urban migration, as a result of industrialization and globalization, has impacted on the physical, social, and cultural fabric of both the rural and the urban landscape. Currently it is estimated that 70% of the world population is living in the urban areas. Since the start of the industrialization period, hordes of people move into the urban areas in search of a better life. The job prospects and the infrastructure as well as the facilities available in the urban areas are relatively much better compared to the rural areas. As more and more people especially the younger generations migrate to the urban areas, what becomes of their hometowns? Are these hometowns destined to become future ghost towns, where only the elderly and retired folks who are comfortable with the familiar surroundings residing. This conference calls for papers that discourse on issues of abandoned towns and cities, their fate and the opportunities that could re-enact these rural sites, such as in the spirit of urbanisation. Technology and Humanity Drawing from Le Corbusier s dictum of the house as machine for living in, the impact of technology to our experience of the everyday life is undeniable, especially the domination of technology to the lives of the Y Page 2

3 Generation. While technology affects the daily life, how can technology be used to improve the quality of life? Can the current problems faced by the cities of today such as pollution, congestion, traffic jams, noise, crime and others be resolved with the available technology today? Looking at a bigger scale which is the city, can a smart city be designed much like a smart building? What aspect of the smart living should be focused on for the betterment of the living conditions without negative impacts on the environment? These questions form the basis of discourse of this conference. Guidelines Abstract The abstract must be related to the topics given; not more than 300 words in the English language which clearly state the objectives, methods used, results and conclusions. The abstract must include a title and the name of the author/s, s and organisation; Full Paper The Paper will be presented to an audience with diverse interests and disciplines in not more than 10 pages including figures, appendices and references. Appendix A would be updated later. Accepted Contributions All accepted papers with paid registration fees will be included in the publication. All authors of accepted papers are required to complete a copyright form, and words biography with photo of author/s in jpeg 300dpi resolution which will be ed on notification. All accepted contributions will be published in the conference proceedings and will be upload onto ARCASIA website. 4 SIA Architectural Design Awards 2012 Selected Works Organised by Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), the SIA Architectural Design Awards is the most prestigious award conferred by SIA to promote and encourage excellence in architectural design in Singapore. In its 12th cycle, SIA Architectural Design Awards 2012 received 112 competition entries from 53 architectural firms. A total of 10 Design Awards and 12 Honourable Mentions was awarded in 6 categories. Of the 10 Design Awards, one project was awarded Best Project Constructed Under S$1.5 Million and two were awarded Building of The Year. It is part history, part memory and part documentation, and serves as a milestone in the profession s development. For more details on the Awards, please visit the BCA website at WORLD HABITAT AWARDS CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS Competitors are invited to submit projects to the World Habitat Awards before 2 May, Projects must propose sustainable solutions to specific community housing problems that are transferable or adaptable to different contexts. The term habitat is understood in its broadest sense, including issues directly linked to the living conditions such as water and waste management, energy performance, social integration, education and health. The awards will be presented each year at the World Urban Forum or the UN-Habitat Governing Council. The 2013 WHA Award winners are the Hebron Old City Rehabilitation Programme Palestine, and the 100,000 Homes Campaign USA, which provides accommodation for thousands of the most vulnerable and chronically homeless people across the country. NEW EDITION OF THE UIA GOLDEN CUBE AWARDS The UIA Architecture and children work programme is launching the second edition of its Golden Cube awards, developed to recognise and promote individuals and organisations that help children and adolescents to better understand architecture. Candidates are invited to submit their projects, activities or productions developed with the goal of explaining architecture and the built environment design processes to children or youth. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: schools, institutions, written media, audio-visual media. This edition will recognise projects that were completed or will be in progress between September 2011 and March The selection process is in two stages. A national jury organised by each participating UIA member section will shortlist projects to be sent on to the international jury, that will select the four winners. Prizes will be awarded during the UIA Durban congress on 1st 10th August These prizes contribute to the goal set by UIA work programme to raise awareness about the built environment, architecture, the city and sustainable development among the youngest generations. 10 SingaPlural 2014 returns for a 3rd edition from March to showcase the best design elements from the multi-faceted creative spectrum Advertising, Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, as well as Interior, Furniture, Graphic and Fashion Design. Organised by the Singapore Furniture Industries Council, SingaPlural 2014 is the anchor event of the Singapore Design Week and is held in conjunction with International Furniture Fair Singapore 2014/31st ASEAN Furniture Show, The Décor Show 2014 and Hospitality 360⁰. Together with 8 other network partners of DesignS, this week-long design celebration features Singapore s very own home-grown talents across the creative industries. For more information, visit The 2013 Biennale has been officially renamed as 2013 Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture (Hong Kong) UABB (HK). This year s Hong Kong Biennale is led by Chief Curator Prof. Colin Fournier along with Joshua Lau and Allen Poon of TETRA and Travis Bunt and Tat Lam of URBANUS. The Shenzhen counterpart is curated by Ole Bouman and Team Li Xiangning + Jeffrey Johnson. The 2013 edition aims to create a closer co-curatorship and co-operation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong. UIA DURBAN 2014 EARLY BIRD REGISTRATIONS OPEN UNTIL 31 DECEMBER 2013 Registrations for the next UIA congress in Durban (3-7 August 2014) are open online and significant discounts are offered for early birds.
