October 2016 AIA Nevada Honor Awards Jury C/o AIA Nevada 401 S. Fourth Street, Ste. 175 Las Vegas, NV Dear AIA Jury, I am both pleased and honored to support the nomination of Mark Ryan, AIA for the Nevada Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Service Award. Mark s commitment to the profession, to his community and to his AIA Chapter is exemplary. As I have come to know him more directly while serving on the executive board of AIA Las Vegas with him, I appreciate his thoughtful and insightful approach to directing our chapter. Mark s leadership on the AIA Nevada and on the AIA Las Vegas Executive board has brought immense value to our members through his identification of issues and his strategic approach to member communication and benefits. I first came to know Mark while working together on a project for the City of Henderson in It was immediately apparent to me that Mark was details driven professional who was committed to seeing things done right. As we worked together I grew to appreciate his approach to holistic solutions through small everyday decisions. His service on this community project for the people of Henderson still provides a wonderful location for recreation and family gathering today. I am certain that his diligence and attention to the details in the early days of that project are still paying dividends today. Mark is not a typical architect -and this is an important distinction- Mark is also an attorney. This professional dichotomy allows Mark to see architectural issues with a unique perspective and to bring a unique vantage point to internal discussions within the AIA. Mark has been liberal with donations of his time on local, State and regional levels as he has served on AIA Las Vegas, AIA Nevada and has now been elected to serve on the AIA Western Mountain Region executive boards. He is a tireless servant for the practice of architecture and is always willing to offer his time and expertise to the furtherance of the efforts of the AIA. I believe Mark Ryan, AIA exemplifies the finest attributes of a member of the AIA, and for these reasons deserves to be recognized with the 2016 AIA Nevada Service Award. Yours truly, Eric M Roberts, AIA Treasurer AIA Western Mountain Region

MARK A. RYAN, AIA, ESQ AIA Nevada Distinguished Service Awards Mark A. Ryan, AIA, Esq. Biography Architecture. It is not a uni dimensional word. Nor is it a uni dimensional profession. And no one believes more in the multidimensional power of architecture in our lives and society than Mark Ryan. This is simply the broader view Ryan takes on diversity within the profession. Diversity is not just about the varied individuals architecture comprises, but also about what those individuals do to take architecture beyond traditional practice and into the very fabric and everyday lives of our communities. During his 30 year career, Mark Ryan has become somewhat of a Renaissance Man. He is an architect, a lawyer, a patent attorney and a consultant in the construction industry. Through the years, Mark has been responsible for the design and construction of projects ranging from $1 million to over $100 million. He has a broad range of government, office, commercial, and hospitality project experience. But from an early age, Mark s love has been architecture and the profession. He became a licensed Architect in 1991 and worked diligently to elevate the architectural profession. His keen eye for the progression of the AIA profession is grounded in his desire to bring new and dynamic initiatives to any situation that can achieve the highest and most positive results. In 1992 he cofounded the South West Iowa Section of the AIA, was elected Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President in 1993 and President of the Section for three terms, from 1994 to Through his early chapter leadership in AIA, he supported several industry campaigns such as defeating a sales tax on professional services initiative that would have had a devastating impact on the practice of architecture. His leadership in AIA continued after moving to Nevada in Ryan served as a Director in 2012, Director/President Elect in 2013, and then served as President of AIA Las Vegas in He served on the long range planning, nomination, fundraising, programs and Fellows committees. During his 2014 administration, he built a constellation of talented Directors, who, as a team, reached optimum results, encouraged unprecedented participation from the Associate Members, Members and the Student Chapter. Ninetytwo new members were added during Western Mountain Region Team Standing up for Design in a six state region Emceeing at the Holiday Gala AIA Nevada Design and Service Awards

Partnering with local charities Safe Nest and Dress for Success Southern Nevada Dedicating Heritage Park Aquatics Center and Senior Facility WMR Treasurer Addressing the audience at the WMR Conference in Salt Lake City September The Presidency for AIA Las Vegas is a oneyear commitment. However, when the incoming President for 2015 unexpectedly resigned before taking office, the Board of Directors unanimously appealed to Mark asking him to continue his leadership for a second term. Mark graciously accepted the challenge and led the Chapter to an even more prosperous year in According to Mark s strategic vision, 2015 was the year of creating a greater awareness of architects and their value throughout our community. It was his mission to up the volume on enhancing public opinion and political appreciation for the role architects play in developing safe, strong, sustainable and livable communities. His vocal determination in 2015 was to raise the consciousness of AIA members regarding their own individual contributions and the value they bring to their clients, to their community and to their profession. The programs and events planned for 2015 were designed to engage members and encourage them to join AIA Las Vegas in Expanding Architectural Awareness. Adding to his leadership in AIA Las Vegas (continuing on the board as Past President), Mark has served at the state level with AIA Nevada as a Director from 2014 to He currently serves as 2016 AIA Nevada President. In 2017 Mark will be expanding his leadership into the Western Mountain Region (WMR). He has been elected as Treasurer for the WMR, and will be responsible for the financial security of the six state region. While Ryan has always supported the AIA and the profession, his own career path has been anything but traditional. Spending the first phase of his career at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he served as Intern Architect and Architect upgrading Air Force bases during the B1 B and B 2 buildup programs, designing almost any building you may find in a medium size city. From there, he was called to action to support a classified Department of Defense program during the Persian Gulf War, as an Architect/Security Engineer (obviously, there are no examples in this package exemplifying this classified work). From that point, the divergence from traditional architecture becomes clear. He spent the last portion of his Government career as a Program Manager focusing on the environmental aspects of buildings and their sites. Post Government, Ryan found his true calling in support of architecture. Joining the largest construction management firm in the world, Mark became the Architectural Inspector / Project Manager for the first GSA Design Excellence Program courthouse, the Hruska U.S. Courthouse in Omaha, Nebraska. That project defined Mark s highest professional calling: making sure that great designs make their way into becoming great buildings, without becoming diminished in the process. After the project (and the minor diversion of law school, passing the bar exam, and judicial clerkship in that same courthouse the Hruska) Ryan became an advocate for good design as a lawyer representing architects and owners against devaluing construction practices. Upon moving to Las Vegas, Mark continued his love of construction management as a CM, Program Manager, and Project Executive. Focusing on Government, gaming, and hospitality clients, Ryan oversaw offices in Las Vegas and Washington D.C. Mark found his true calling in support of architecture. making sure that great designs find their way into becoming great buildings, without becoming diminished in the process.

Achievements Mark is not your typical architect and this is an important distinction. Mark is also an attorney. [This] allows Mark to see architectural issues with a unique perspective ~Eric M. Roberts, AIA, Treasurer AIA Western Mountain Region Achievements are a worthy goal. However, achievements hold the most meaning (and are many times only possible) when they accomplished as a team. While Mark is most proud of the accomplishments of AIA Las Vegas, AIA Nevada, AIA Iowa, and the other organizations he has led, he is most proud of helping to direct the incredibly effective efforts of each of those teams he was able to assemble and lead. A few highlights of chapter accomplishments which were achieved under Mark s presidency are highlighted below: Delivered powerful programs that focus on Diversity, Communications, and Small Firm Practice. Launched the I M IN LV MENTORING program providing opportunities for students and associate and architect m embers to meet, exchange ideas and mentor each other. Expanded the High School Design Awards program to include the UNLV/AIA Summer Design Camp giving talented young designers an opportunity to learn more about careers in architecture at an early age. Assisted members in achieving the necessary continuing education credits, we have provided classes that provided 27 AIA CE Credits and 17HSW credits; more than enough to maintain AIA membership and renew. In addition, AIA has partnered with the State Board of Architecture, Interior Design and Residential Design to provide 2 day long seminars providing all the credits needed to renew license in Nevada. our Bald by Design effort to put an end to childhood cancer. The Nevada team generated over $69,000 for this effort. AIA Las Vegas provided over $13,000 in scholarships to UNLV students each year. The 41st and 42 nd Annual AIA Las Vegas Golf Tournament, held at Red Rock Country Club, were a great success as sold out events, and generating over $20,000 in income for the Chapter each year. Under Mark s administration, AIA Las Vegas was instrumental in achieving concurrent licensure for architecture graduates, so that they can begin taking the ARE Examinations upon graduation. Working with the NSBAIDRD and leading the way to a more sensible path to licensure, AIA Las Vegas was able to achieve concurrent licensure this year. AIA Las Vegas put into place all planning for the 2016 relaunch of Architecture Las Vegas magazine. The magazine ultimately had a local, regional, and even national distribution, semiannually. In conjunction with the Marjorie Barrick Museum on the UNLV campus, produced the AIA exhibit Reflecting & Projecting: 20 Years of Excellence in Design. This exhibit provided a retrospective of the exceptional work that has been created by AIA Architects, and how their work has influenced the growth and prosperity of Nevada. In 2015 the Design and Service Awards Gala was scheduled to coincide with the end of the year Holiday Celebration, reinstituting one exceptional black tie event at the end of the year. Outreach into the community included a very successful participation with St. Baldrick s and

In preparation for the 2015 and 2017 legislative years, Mark s legal acumen was invaluable in effectively preparing AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada for three legislative issues that have a direct impact on architects: Elimination of the Duty to Defend clause in contracts. As President elect on the AIA Nevada Executive Committee in 2015, Mark s legal guidance was invaluable in effectively changing the duty to defend clause in state public works contracts. This clause placed an inequitable burden on architects to legally defend all owners, contractors and subcontractors affiliated with any public works project on which they were the architect. This has leveled the playing field for architects and design professionals. Defeat of the Margin Tax that would have been an incredible burden on architectural firms in Nevada. Lien Rights for Architects, allowing architects to place a lien for payment of services before construction is commenced. As President of AIA Nevada, Mark is currently working to clarify the lien laws on projects in Nevada, which will allow architects to be paid for the work they have done, whether or not the project is ever begun. In addition to Ryan s AIA achievements, he remains active in many other ways in his community. He contributes his time and resources to support Dress for Success of Southern Nevada (empowering and uplifting women reentering the workforce from disadvantaged circumstances), Hero School (assisting in the transition into the workforce of individuals from the homeless to college graduates), and Habitat for Humanity. He has also served civic positions as Chairman of the Council Bluffs, IA City Development Commission, Trustee of Sanitary and Improvement District No 142 in Douglas County, Nebraska, the Treasurer/Director of Bella Fiore Homeowners Association in Henderson, Nevada. Mark spearheaded the effort in our State Legislature to eliminate the Duty to Defend clause His prolific talents are continuously benefitting our community.and he is only getting started. ~Edward A. Vance, FAIA, NCARB, Founder & CEO EV & A Architects Mark also enjoys being a guest lecturer and panelist for professional, civic, and educational organizations and conferences, including UNLV Graduate School of Architecture, Iowa Western College, UNLV Career Center, the National Association of Women in Construction. 8 October 7, 2016 AIA Nevada Service Awards Jury 401 South Fourth Street Suite 175 Las Vegas, Nevada Re: 2016 AIA Nevada Service Award Mr. Mark Ryan, AIA Dear Distinguished Members of the Jury, It is my distinct honor and privilege to write this letter of support for Mark Ryan, AIA for this year s AIA Nevada Service Award. I have personally witnessed his unwavering and selfless service to our state and local chapters over the past several years and continue to admire his deep and continued dedication to the institute, the profession and the state of Nevada making him an excellent candidate for this recognition. Mark has made a clear and significant impact here in Nevada through his continued involvement in the AIA, his community engagement and volunteer activities including his most recent election as our WMR Treasurer. Since moving here in 2008, his volunteer leadership at all levels of the Institute has had a profound and long lasting impact on our state. He immediately joined the chapter and was elected to AIA Board of Directors in 2011 becoming our AIA Las Vegas President in He went on to serve an unprecedented second term in 2015 leading our local chapter through a difficult and tumultuous time. He went on to serve on the AIA Nevada Executive Committee for two years ultimately becoming our AIA State President in But his time on these boards has not been just seat time. For example, as an attorney (for which we ve been most fortunate) Mark spearheaded the effort in our State Legislature to eliminate the Duty to Defend clause from our public works contracts removing the inequitable undue burden for every Architect in the State. His prolific talents are continuously benefiting our community, our profession and the institute and he is only just getting started. His resume is nothing short of remarkable, and his performance throughout is hallmarked by endless enthusiasm and boundless energy which is an inspiration to me and everyone he meets. The AIA Nevada Service Award recognizes an individual architect who has made significant contributions to the profession and the citizens of the State of Nevada. Mark and his service epitomize the meaning and purpose of this award and therefore I strongly encourage your consideration of my friend and colleague, Mark Ryan, AIA for the 2016 AIA Nevada Service Award. 10 AIA Nevada Service Award Jurors c/o AIA Nevada 401 S. Fourth Street, Suite 17i5 Las Vegas, NV October 10, 2016 Dear AIA Nevada Service Awards Jurors: On behalf of the AIA Las Vegas members, I am pleased to provide this letter in support of Mark Ryan, AIA for the AIA Nevada Service Award, in recognition of his service to the profession and to the members of AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada. Mark s commitment to building a stronger profession and his dedicated service through the AIA is exemplary. He is a leader who generously supports the efforts of his colleagues and upholds the highest professional standards. Mark moved to Las Vegas in 2008, and joined the AIA Las Vegas Chapter, quickly becoming an active and effective member of the AIA Las Vegas Board. As an architect and an attorney Mark possesses remarkable leadership and advocacy skills. He was elected President the AIA Las Vegas Chapter in 2014, while the Chapter was still recovering from the 2008 recession. His guidance in the financial stability of the Chapter and his promotion of community outreach and advocacy on the behalf of architects, helped to hasten the Chapter s recovery from five devastating years. Always ready to be of service, in 2015 when the resignation of the incoming President left the Chapter in a bad situation, Mark accepted the Board s request and served a second term as President of the Chapter. During that year he also served on the AIA Nevada Executive Committee and was instrumental in writing the legislation (AB 106) that successfully changed the Duty to Defend clause in public works contracts, removing the inequitable burden to defend the owner and all contractors in the event of legal action. Mark was recently elected to the position of Treasurer for the AIA Western Mountain Region Council, and represents the interests of AIA members across our six-state region, including Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada. He is an effective advocate on behalf of the profession, and uses his voice and his legal understanding of how legislation can impact practice to address the important issues on the local, state and federal levels. There seems to be no limit to his energy, enthusiasm and dedication to his profession and his fellow architects. Mark refers to himself as a non-traditional architect because he is not a designer, but is more skilled in the intricacies of managing projects and successfully bringing them in on time and on budget. He is an effective advocate on behalf of the profession, and uses his voice and his understanding of how legislation can impact practice to address important issues on the local, state and federal levels. With the ability to envision the future and to build consensus, he is a most effective leader. I can think of no other individual who is more deserving of this recognition and I hope that you will agree and honor Mark Ryan, AIA, with the AIA Nevada Service Award for Yours truly, Brett K. Ewing, AIA President, AIA Las Vegas
