1 MALIBU ORCHID SOCIETY Volume XLVIII, VI November 2010 President s Message: Southland Orchid Show: We had an award-winning entry at the Southland Orchid Show at the Huntington last month, as you can see in the separate article listing the awards received by our members. I would like to thank for her design, John Delfino for the construction and Lezlie Moore-Purcell, Beverly Christensen and for their help installing the display. Thanks also to Alice Hall, Karen Smith, John Delfino and Marianne Lu for assisting the take-down. Website: The Board has decided to move our website to another host to save more than $200 annually the cost of maintaining it. The new host requires a different format, and Rabinder has been working on its design with input from many of the Board, plus Shiva Trieu, who has maintained our existing site for several years. We may have the new site up by the time of the November meeting. Give it a try at malibuorchidsociety.org Spring programs: Based on the response at the last meeting, the Society will hold a separate session this spring at someone s home to review potting techniques. We also plan to have a culture session in the spring to discuss helpful hints, with input from our members who November MOS Meeting Tuesday, November 16, :00 pm Pacific Palisades Woman s Club 901 Haverford Avenue Pacific Palisades, CA Sandra Tillisch-Svoboda Orchids of Bhutan A trip to the Kingdom of Bhutan is literally an ascent to heaven on to the roof of the world into the realm of the ethereal. With 72 percent of the country under forest cover, Bhutan s pristine ecology is home to rare and endangered flora and fauna. In 2007, our speaker, Sandra Tillisch-Svoboda, traveled to Bhutan, and she will share what she learned about this wonderful country and the orchids that grow there. Sandra Svoboda was the orchid pot-washer and general aide for her husband and mentor, Al, until they built their second greenhouse 20 years ago. She claimed it as hers, and grows a number of different genera and now has taken on the care of Al s paphiopedilums. She is currently into the weird and wonderful, concentrating on bulbophyllums and angraecums. Sandra has lived in Santa Barbara since the late 1960s.
