1 MALIBU ORCHID SOCIETY Volume XLVIII, xviii November 2012 President s Message MOS Meeting In October, the Society won the Silver Trophy for the Best Display by a Society a Society at the Southland Orchid Show at the Huntington. I would like to extend my personal thanks to Alice Hall, who designed the display, and to all those who showed plants and helped with the construction of the display. Last month, we were also privileged to visit the estate of Geneva and Charles Thornton in San Marino, now home for the best plants from three orchid collections recently donated to the Huntington. The election of the Officers and Directors for 2013 will be held at our November meeting. Please see the list of those proposed for these offices in the body of the newsletter. Grafton Tanqury November 20th, 2012 Pacific Palisades Women s Club 901 Haverford Avenue Pacific Palisades, CA Professor Joseph Arditti Will Speak on How Orchids Survive in Nature Professor Joseph Arditti is currently a Professor Emeritus of the University of California at Irvine where he held the position of Professor of Biology until he retired in His entire career spanning 35 years has been devoted to the scientific research of orchids. Dr. Arditti has written many scientific books and is the author of over 375 articles on orchids. His well-received book entitled Fundamentals of Orchid Biology won the 1992 award for Book of the Year from the Association of American Publishers. Dr. Arditti was a featured speaker at the 20th World Orchid Conference in Singapore last November, Dr. Arditti has traveled the world over to lecture at orchid conferences as well as to observe orchids growing in the wild. His talks are always illustrated with outstanding photographs. Prof. Arditti will discuss the various ways that orchids have adapted to survive in nature. His first-hand observations will provide us with many helpful hints on how to keep our collections alive and thriving. 6 Southland Orchid Show The Malibu Orchid Society fared well at the Huntington show this year. We won the silver trophy for the Best Display by a Society, and our members garnered nine ribbons. 7 Thornton Visit On October 20, the Society had the good fortune to visit the estate of Geneva and Charles Thornton in San Marino. The Thornton s estate covers 13 acres, which have been accumulated by the couple over the last several years. Their home on the property was designed and built in 1928 by Myron Hunt, who also designed the Rose Bowl; Occidental College; Henry Huntington s home in San Marino, which is now the main art gallery at the Huntington Library; the Mission Inn in Riverside; Pomona College; the Flintridge Sacred Hart Academy and many libraries in southern California, including the main library in Pasadena. Three years ago, the Thornton built two large conservatories, which were originally intended to function as orangeries. At the suggestion of the Huntington, they have, instead, served as the home for the best plants from three orchid collections donated in the past several years to the Huntington Library. The Thorntons were very gracious hosts, and all of us who were able to make the visit were very appreciative of the chance to visit their home, gardens and orchid collection. There is no need to call to reserve a seat at the MOS table. Plan to come and meet your MOS friends for a dinner before the meeting. The Raffle Table We have recently tried to improve the selection on our raffle table, with larger plants in bloom. However, we are currently spending from $125 to $150 each meeting, and the sale of tickets has been half of that amount. Our raffle is a great opportunity to acquire some excellent plants at a fraction of their retail cost. We encourage you to buy more tickets, so we can continue to have such a large selection available at the raffle. Auction Begins
