1 LEGENDARY GROUP UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE WILL KICK OFF MOMA PS1 RESIDENCY PROGRAM WITH A RARE PERFORMANCE AS PART OF SUNDAY SESSIONS ON DECEMBER 14 Artist Collective ALLGOLD Selected for First Residency in MoMA PS1 s Adjacent Print Shop Space LONG ISLAND CITY, NY MoMA PS1 is pleased to announce that Kevin Beasley, Inva Çota, Golnaz Esmaili and Stephen Decker, the four members of artist collective, ALLGOLD, are participating in a residency program that was initiated in October 2014 at The Print Shop at MoMA PS1. ALLGOLD has selected Underground Resistance, the seminal Detroit-based musical collective known for its politically-motivated techno, to kick off the residency with a rare performance in on Sunday, December 14 at MoMA PS1. Underground Resistance will be accompanied by a range of additional performances, and discussions in an event titled ALLGOLD Presents: Underground - An Indefinite Community? The residency offers ALLGOLD the opportunity to start an artist-run space located in a storefront on MoMA PS1 s block. In close proximity to the institution, yet, independent from its programming, the collective has created a social space to foster communities in which new ideas and thoughts can manifest and find an audience. Run by artists for other artists the residency functions as an event space, artist studio, gallery and community center. The diverse backgrounds of the participants which, encompassing visual art, design, and music, aim to bring together a variety of creative practices. The program ranges from scheduled events such as screenings, talks, performances, concerts and dance nights to more long term projects that invite other artists and MoMA PS1 audiences to spend time and participate in the residency. Kevin Beasley, a member of new artists in residence ALLGOLD encapsulates their project and why it is a necessary venture within the contemporary art world: "It is important for artists to tap into a community that is at least as multifaceted as your interests. It is a way to push outside of your comfort zone and not only experience something refreshing, but also stimulate your creative energy. I feel like ALLGOLD is a way to shape the context that my actions, activities, and interests as a person live in. ABOUT ALLGOLD ALLGOLD is comprised of artists, designers, and musicians who seek to facilitate a community by organizing artistic endeavors that necessitate a dedicated space. The group aims to provide a site for exploration and exchange in City and abroad. As an artist-run space currently in residence at the MoMA PS1 Print Shop, ALLGOLD aims to develop a symbiotic relationship with a forward thinking institution that cultivates artistic expression, fosters experimentation within the working process, and reimagines the social possibilities between the art community and its museums. ALLGOLD is currently programming film screenings, live performances, focused aural events, radiophonic broadcasts, talks, dance nights, and social gatherings. Their interest 1

2 in multiple platforms is employed to concentrate the social aspects of various practices while leaving the floor open to emergent formats and concerns inherent to the present. By inviting different artists, musicians, writers and theorists to organize smaller events within the context of their Residency, ALLGOLD hopes to expand the community of participants and perspectives and challenge preconceived standards of value. In December, ALLGOLD presents the re-launch of the dramatic electronic music label GENERATIONS UNLIMITED with an opening reception and lamination ritual on Saturday December. 6, 12-6pm. Ken Montgomery's famed sound art gallery Generator will be open every Saturday and Sunday from December 6th December 21st, 12-6pm accompanied by a series of concerts, installations and screenings that will feature, among others, Arcane Device, Benton C. Bainbridge, Charles Cohen, CHOP SHOP, Conrad Schnitzler, Daren Ho, Enchantress of Bioluminosity, G. Lucas Crane, Gen Ken, If, Bwana, Lary 7, Kevin Beasley, Naval Cassidy, Ryder Cooley, Screwfeet, Unquent, The Sons of God and Tommy Birchett. Kevin Beasley (b. 1985, Lynchburg, VA) graduated with a BFA from the College for Creative Studies, Detroit and an MFA from Yale University in He was an artist in residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem His work I.W.M.S.B. is featured on the record "There Will Never Be Silence" by MoMA/MoMA PS1's new record label. It is also on view in Cut to Swipe at the Museum of Modern Art, curated by Stuart Comer and Erica Papernik. Kevin's sculptures, sound and performances have been featured in the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Sound Horizon in conjunction with a retrospective of Jim Hodges at the Walker Art Center and When the Stars Begin to Fall at the Studio Museum in Harlem. His work was included in the 2013 Queens International as well as group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, 2013 and the Studio Museum in Harlem, His piece I Want My Spot Back was performed at MoMA in 2012 as part of Ralph Lemon s Some Sweet Day. He has forthcoming projects at the Dallas Museum of Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in. Inva Çota (b. 1986, Pogradec, Albania) holds a BFA from Pratt Institute and an MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University. She started her practice as a graphic designer at the Museum of Modern Art with a focus in exhibition design. Her work has been recognized by various magazines and organizations such as #22 Graphic Magazine, AIGA 365 Design Effectiveness, and TDC 56 for Typographic Excellence. Currently she works at Base Design and as a graphic design instructor at Pratt Institute. Golnaz Esmaili (b. 1985, Tehran, Iran) received her BFA from Azad Art & Architecture University in Tehran, her MFA in Communication Design from Tehran University in 2009 and her MFA in Graphic Design from Yale University in She has exhibited internationally throughout Iran,, Atlanta, Columbus, Germany, France, and Brazil. Esmaili was rewarded the Vije Travel Grant in 2009, 1st Workshop Prize in the Chaumont Graphic Design Festival in 2009, John A.Carrafiell Scholarship Fund in Her work has been published in several books such as Arabesque 2 in Germany. She is currently living and working in. Stephen Decker (b. 1987) is an artist currently based in. He received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and MFA from Yale University. 3 has been presented for radio broadcast on the FM band as well as various online platforms and featured in an evening long performance to inaugurate the Filipino American Museum. While living in, Stephen has extended his activities under the alias SYSDJ and is currently resident DJ at Lactic Incorporated where he has twice appeared as a fashion model. In his professional capacity he works as a graphic designer for various corporate and non-profit organizations. His weekly radio program will make its debut at ALLGOLD. ABOUT FEATURED ARTISTS Ken Montgomery Kevin Montgomery is a -based artist whose involvement in the cassette-culture and mail-art movements of the late seventies led to the creation of Generator, New York s first sound art gallery (1989). At Generator Montgomery amassed what is now a time capsule of internationally produced art in the form of cassettes, records, zines and ephemera from the days before the internet when artists collaborated and corresponded by post. In 2013 at Audio Visual Arts in City, Montgomery exhibited his collection from that era and re-created Generator by curating events with artists whose work was shown at Generator in the late 80s and early 90s. Generator will re-emerge as a popup in the ALLGOLD Print Shop at MoMA PS1 from December 6 December 21. Montgomery will curate concerts, installations and screenings of work by sound artists each weekend. Additionally, the Generations Unlimited label he started in 1987 with David Prescott and Conrad Schnitlzer will re-launch. Underground Resistance Underground Resistance is a label for a movement. A movement that wants change by sonic revolution. Underground Resistance urges you to join the resistance; and help combat the mediocre audio and visual programming that is being fed to the inhabitants of Earth, this programming is stagnating the minds of the people; building a wall between races and preventing world peace. It is this wall we are going to smash. By using the untapped energy potential of sound we are going to destroy this wall much the same as certain frequencies shatter glass. Techno is a music based in experimentation; it is music for the future of the human race. Without this music there will be no peace, no love, no vision. By simply communicating through sound, techno has brought people of all different nationalities together under one roof to enjoy themselves. Isn't it obvious that music and dance are the keys to the universe? So called primitive animals and tribal humans have known this for thousands of years! We urge all brothers and sisters of the underground to create and transmit their tones and frequencies no matter how so called primitive their equipment may be. Transmit these tones and wreak havoc on the programmers! Spectacle Theater Spectacle is a collectively run screening space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, established and staffed entirely by volunteers. Programming runs seven days a week and encompasses overlooked works, offbeat gems, contemporary art, radical polemics, live performance and more. 3

4 Charles Cohen Charles Cohen is a Philadelphia-based free jazz musician and composer. Creating music since 1971, Cohen is considered a pioneer in synthesizers and performance. His music is entirely improvisational and produced solely on a vintage Buchla Music Easel synthesizer, an extremely rare integrated analog performance instrument made by synthesizer pioneer Don Buchla. With few recorded or commercially available works to his credit, Cohen prefers to concentrate on creating electronic music in the setting of the live performance space. Arcane Device/David Lee Myers David Lee Myers is a sound and visual artist who has lived and worked in City since Pulsewidth serves as the platform for his activities in the arts, particularly sound projects, a number of these have been released under the Pulsewidth record label. From 1987 through 1993, sound projects were developed under the name Arcane Device. With the development of new devices in 2014, it seems fitting for the moniker to be revived. Sohrab Mohebbi Sohrab Mohebbi is a curator and writer based in Los Angeles. Mohebbi is the recipient of 2010 Montehermoso research grant and 2012 recipient of Creative Capital Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Program for the blog Presence Documents. His writings have been published in Bidoun Magazine, where he is a contributing editor, as well as Artforum, Art Agenda, Modern Painters, among others. Mohebbi was the 2010 curatorial fellow at Queens Museum of Art,. He is the assistant curator at REDCAT, Los Angeles. Together with Rush Estevez, he received the 2013 The Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award for the upcoming exhibition Hotel Theory. He holds an MA in curatorial studies from Bard College and BFA in photography from Tehran Art University. Danna Vajda Danna Vajda is an artist and writer, born in Vancouver, Canada and based in Brooklyn,. Recent exhibitions include both institutional spaces and provisional, less institutional spaces. ABOUT SUNDAY SESSIONS Sunday Sessions is a weekly presentation of performance, moving images, music, dance, and discursive programs. Its mission is to embrace live arts as an integral aspect of contemporary practice and ask how these different art forms produce specific ways of thinking and useful means to engage with the world. Every Sunday different artists, curators, thinkers and other cultural agents are invited to share their latest projects and ideas with the MoMA PS1 audience.
