2 ASSESS: CHILE AT COLUMBIA Assess: Chile at Columbia is an initiative led by the Latin Lab at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation s (GSAPP) of Columbia University that discusses, in several formats, the state of contemporary cities in the southern country by addressing the question: who cares for Chilean cities? This project aims to raise questions and skip external, often patronizing understandings of Chilean practices. To do so, Assess: Chile at Columbia invites Chilean scholars who closely in touch with both national practices and international debates in the fields of architecture, public space, and urban projects are uniquely positioned to initiate a critical conversation. Distinguished Chilean scholars Luis Eduardo Bresciani, Romy Hecht, and Rodrigo Pérez de Arce selected three projects to represent each of the aforementioned categories in the exhibition Answers form Architecture, Public Space and Urban Projects, to be held on the 100 Level of Avery Hall. This show will inform the Conference Who cares for Chilean cities?, at which renowned US-based scholars Saskia Sassen, Stan Allen, and Iñaki Ábalos will assess the topics and works presented by their Chilean peers, opening up a further discussion moderated by GSAPP faculty Clara Irazábal, Galia Solomonoff, and Enrique Walker. The conference, to be held on March at Columbia University s Wood Auditorium of Avery Hall, will be followed by the opening reception of the Exhibition. These events are cosponsored by GSAPP, the Institute for Latin-American Studies (ILAS), Columbia s Global Center in Chile, the Chilean Council of Culture and Arts, the Embassy of Chile in the US, and the Chilean Consulate in NYC.

4 URBAN PROJECTS PRESENTS LUIS EDUARDO BRESCIANI (Chile, 1965) is Architect from the PUC Chile, and Master in Urban Design from Harvard University. His professional and academic work focuses on public policy of urban design and planning. Between 2000 and 2010 he held the positions of Secretary of Housing and Urban Development of the Santiago Metropolitan Region and Head of the National Department of Urban Development of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development of Chile. In 2009 he received the Johnson Award from the Society of Architects of Chile for his contributions to urban public policies. His recent publications have concentrated on the lessons of postdisaster management in Chile. He is Associate Professor and Director of the Master of Urban Design at the PUC of Chile. ASSESSES SASKIA SASSEN is sociologist, Ph.D., Notre Dame, She is the Lynd Professor of Sociology and Member, The Committee on Global Thought, Columbia University. Her research is focused on Globalization, Urban Sociology, and Sociology of Transnational Processes. Her books are translated into twenty-one languages; among the most recent we can find Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages (2008), A Sociology of Globalization (2007), the 4th fully updated edition of Cities in a World Economy (2011). The Global City came out in a new fully updated edition in Her comments have appeared in The Guardian, The New York Times, Le Monde Diplomatique, the International Herald Tribune, Newsweek International, OpenDemocracy.net, the Huffington Post, Vanguardia, Clarin, the Financial Times, among others. She is currently working on When Territory Exits Existing Frameworks. MODERATES CLARA IRAZÁBAL is Director of the Latin Lab and Assistant Professor of Urban Planning at Columbia University s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation in New York City. She received a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of California at Berkeley and has two Masters in Architecture and Urban Design and Planning. Her research focuses on processes and politics of planning, especially in Latin America and Latino US, and their impact on community development and sociospatial justice. Irazábal has worked as consultant, researcher, and/or professor in Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Germany, Spain, Vietnam, and the US; and has lectured in many other countries.

5 PUBLIC SPACE PRESENTS ROMY HECHT (Chile, 1972) is Architect and M-Arch from the PUC Chile, and PhD in History and Theory of Architecture, Princeton University. Her research focuses on theory, history, and criticism of twentieth-century public landscapes. She has presented her dissertation, The Attack on Greenery: Critical Perceptions of the American Man-Made Landscape, at Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, and Rice University. Her essays have been published in journals such as Harvard Design Magazine, ARQ (Chile), CA (Chile), Revista 180 (Chile) and New Architecture (China). She translated to Spanish J.B. Jackson s The Necessity for Ruins and Other Essays (ARQ, 2012). She has been visiting assistant professor in the GSD, Harvard University. Hecht is Assistant Chair of Undergraduate Affairs and Associate Professor at the School of Architecture of the PUC of Chile. ASSESSES STAN ALLEN is an architect working in New York and George Dutton 27 Professor of Architecture at Princeton University. From 2002 to 2012 he was Dean of the School of Architecture at Princeton. He holds degrees from Brown University, The Cooper Union and Princeton. His architectural firm SAA/Stan Allen Architect has realized buildings and urban projects in the United States, South America and Asia. Stan Allen has received prizes such as an Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2009), the P/A Award (2009, 2011), John Q. Hejduk Award (2009), and the AIA Award (2009, 2010, 2011). His architectural work is published in Points + Lines: Diagrams and Projects for the City (2001) and his essays in Practice: Architecture, Technique and Representation (2008). His most recent book is Landform Building: Architecture s New Terrain from MODERATES GALIA SOLOMONOFF is the founder and director of Solomonoff Architecture Studio. She received her Master in Architecture from Columbia University, and was awarded the McKim Prize for Excellence in Design. Prior to founding SAS, Solomonoff founded OpenOffice. She taught at Princeton, The Cooper Union, Yale, and currently at Columbia. Her work appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, W, ARTNews, Artforum, and Domus. New York Magazine called Dia: Beacon, which Solomonoff designed, one of today s most compelling museums, and named Solomonoff part of the Next Wave of Designers in Solomonoff collaborated in several books including Latin American Architecture: Six Voices, Post Ductility: Metals in Architecture and Engineering, and is working on Documenting Latin American Architecture a documentary and book project. Her writing aims at the recognition of Latin American Architecture s cultural relevance.

6 ARCHITECTURE PRESENTS RODRIGO PÉREZ DE ARCE (Chile, 1948), Architect, AA Graduate Diploma 1975, UCV Doctor He has taught at the AA, University of Bath, U Penn and Cornell amongst others. He is a tenured professor at the Catholic University Santiago. His topics of interest include urban types and forms, historical, landscape and programmatic dimensions of public space. His publications include: Re urbanizing the city, in: Le Corbusier Chandigarh and the Modern City (USA, 2009), Material Circumstances: The project and its construction, in: Chilean Modern Architecture since 1950 (Texas, 2010). His books include Valparaíso School: Open City Group (Birkhauser, 2003), and Domicilio Urbano (ARQ, 2nd ed., 2013). He is currently engaged in projects in Santiago and Valparaiso, Chile, preparing a book on the subject of play and urban space, and teaching at the GSD in Harvard University. ASSESSES IÑAKI ÁBALOS (Spain, 1956) is a Ph.D. in Architecture (1991) and Chaired Professor of Architectural Design at the ETSAM (since 2002). He is a founding member of Ábalos+Sentkiewicz arquitectos (since 2006), Ábalos & Herreros ( ), and the director of the Laboratorio de Técnicas y Paisajes Contemporáneos (LTPC, since 2002). His work specializes in broad interdisciplinary dimensions, the integration of theory and practice, and the specific focus on the interaction of architecture, landscape, and culture. He has been awarded in many international competitions, subject of numerous individual and collective exhibitions and different monographs. He was Kenzo Tange Professor (2009), Design Critic in Architecture ( ) and since 2012 Professor in Residence at the Graduate School of Design (GSD) of Harvard University. MODERATES ENRIQUE WALKER is an architect and Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, where he also directs the Master of Science program in Advanced Architectural Design. His publications include, Tschumi on Architecture: Conversations with Enrique Walker (Monacelli, 2006) and Lo Ordinario (Gustavo Gili, 2010).
