4 Historical Note The vill of Cotterstock is mentioned in a charter to the monks of Peterborough in the year 664. Cotterstock Hall, which is scheduled as being of historical interest, is a dignified medium sized manor house, a most attractive specimen of its kind, and shows the date 1658 on its central gable. The Hall is closely associated with the poet Dryden who was a relation of Elmes Steward, the owner of the property about 1693 and the poet spent a good part of the last two years of his life there. The attic in the West gable of the South front is by tradition the room used by Dryden and is wainscoted with good early 17th century paneling. Although the Hall has not any great historical associations the letters of Dryden which are full of local colour in reference to his visits there, give a distinct literary association of much interest. The Church of St Andrew stands a short distance from the River Nene and retains some of the masonry belonging to a church built not later than the end of the 11th century. A College was founded here in the 14th century, the foundation charter being dated 1338 and the remains have now been converted into the present Church Farm. A further note of interest for the 21st Century is that Cotterstock Hall was chosen as the film set for The Woman in Black. The actor, Daniel Radcliffe, of Harry Potter fame, played the leading role and said of the Hall Cotterstock Hall is a remarkable building bursting with grandeur, perfect for The Woman in Black. Situation Cotterstock Hall is situated in the delightful Northamptonshire village of Cotterstock and commands extensive rural views towards Oundle to the front and Fotheringhay to the rear. The town of Oundle, with its famous school, is situated some 2 miles to the west. It is a thriving town with an eclectic mix of shops and a weekly market and farmers market. To the east lies the Cathedral City of Peterborough with more extensive shopping and leisure facilities. It also boasts a main line railway station, with trains to London Kings Cross taking from 50 minutes. The area is well known for its education and recreational facilities. Oundle School is situated some 2 miles away, with Uppingham, Oakham and Stamford close by. The front elevation is a beautiful E shape in formal Renaissance style with the Flemish influence shown by the volute gable over the projecting porch.
