4 HeadLines Dear Lamplighter Community, New school year new opportunities new visions! As we plan for the future, it has been both fun and instructive to hear stories about the history of Lamplighter. Having the chance to listen and learn from alums who are still very connected with the school has provided great perspective. The year 2013 has been a year of celebrating 60 years since the founding of The Lamplighter School. Through the efforts of Aimee Whitaker, Melissa Niven, and the Carnival committee, our Jubilee was a most festive occasion. We had a rollicking good time. The reunions and gatherings for alums to reconnect have been such happy occasions. The message is consistent: Lamplighter remains the school that they remember best because of the faculty and programs that helped to shape their childhood in important ways. Whether they are recent graduates or now have families of their own, Lamplighter alums stories of playing in the tunnel, kite-flying day, and the chickens resonate and draw us closer together. The Lamplighter experience is timeless and always relevant. The focus on engaging the youngest children in handson learning through play is as meaningful today as when the school began 60 years ago. Through the strategic planning process, we are designing improvements as school leadership has always done. As the thinking begins, what is first and foremost is maintaining the traditions of all that makes and keeps Lamplighter the special place that it is for children. Our school is rich in tradition while staying on top of all that is current in the field of education for the youngest learners. The roots of innovative programming in technology, science, math, and the arts for which Lamplighter is well known remain central. As we create a vision for the future, we are considering ways to strengthen the endowment to protect the school in perpetuity. We are also investigating ways to improve our school building so that programs continue to stay in step with the very best 21st-century instruction. Lastly, we are considering an additional building so our students have specially designed spaces such as a maker lab, a place for tinkering, exploring, experimenting, and constructing. There has not been new construction in nearly 20 years. The last addition was Cook Gym in These are exciting times for Lamplighter, and I am honored to work with the Board of Trustees and lead the School during this period in its history. 5 OnBoard The great gift of a highly intentional education like Lamplighter s is that it really recognizes what your kids are capable of doing. Dear Lamplighter Community, I grew up in New England, and fall there was a very literal event. The greens and blues of summer gave way to the spectacular reds and browns of autumn and later the grays and whites of winter. In Texas, fall is more of a metaphor as the skies are often blue and the grass is often green. As with the seasons, change is always happening in many subtle ways around our school community. As we start another great school year at Lamplighter, change is all around us. Last year s graduating class has moved on to new challenges. A new group of freshfaced and smaller-every-year 3-year-olds has started their first year of pre-k. If your child is an existing Lamplighter student, they have moved up to an exciting new set of opportunities and challenges as they rise up through the seven-year program. As a parent, it is a real revelation to see your shy first-grader blossom into a confident second grader, or to see your math-challenged second-grader become a third-grade math whiz. Our kids are ready to grow and change in so many ways that we as parents can scarcely realize. The great gift of a highly intentional education like Lamplighter s is that it really recognizes what your kids are capable of doing, and trusts them enough to put them in a position to go out and do it. You will notice some changes around our campus, some classrooms have moved around, and grade levels have been shifted to accommodate changing demands from last year to this year. O Neil Ford and Frank Welch thoughtfully designed our campus to provide us with the flexibility to move some things around as needs arose. Of course you will also notice our new modular science classroom that has just opened for business. This dedicated science space will provide our wonderful science faculty with more room for equipment and experimentation. It will also help us think intelligently about how we might use a new space on our campus. A new facility was the single most important recommendation to come out of our recent strategic plan. Dr. Hill and her team also worked very hard on the academic side of the strategic plan, and the fruits of their work will be seen in many subtle and not-so-subtle facets of your child s education. Constant evaluation of the education of our children is a neverending process, as our very dedicated faculty remains committed to staying on the leading edge of the educational system. Those of us with Lamplighter graduates still have very vivid memories of the 3-year-old whom Ms. McCullough coaxed out of the car with the sheer force of her personality. But we also know that same 3-year-old left Lamplighter as a highly capable 10-year-old fully ready for their next school. Change is all around us, and around Lamplighter most of it is for the better. Trust the great professionals you have entrusted your precious children with, and enjoy the rich school community that each and every one of us help to make so outstanding. 6 OnBoard New Trustees On Board A. Shonn Brown Shonn Brown is a respected bar and community leader. In addition to her civil trial experience, Ms. Brown has experience in the criminal courts through her service as a Lawyer on Loan to the Dallas County District Attorney s Office. She has been named a Super Lawyer by Texas Monthly magazine, and recognized among the Best Lawyers under 40 by D Magazine. She serves on the Board of Big Thought and the Dallas Black Dance Theatre and has served in the leadership of the Dallas Museum of Art. She enjoys spending time with her husband Clarence and her children Evan (age 10), Ryan (age 7) and Lily (age 5). David Chard David J. Chard, Ph.D., is the Leon Simmons Endowed Dean and founding dean of the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development and Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Methodist University. Since his arrival at SMU, Dr. Chard has focused on building the Simmons School to be a national leader in research and development on education reform. In October 2011, Dr. Chard was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Board for Education Sciences, a 15-member board that advises and consults with the director of the Institute of Education Sciences. Jenney Gillikin Jenney is a graduate of Colorado College with a degree in art. A winding career path has connected her disparate interests including youth development, legal marketing, public health and fine art. Jenney is the mother of three, Kate (9), Alexander (6), and Sally (1), and currently divides her time between her busy family and various volunteer opportunities. For the past three years, Jenney has been a co-chair of the Lamplighter Annual Fund. 6 LAMPPOST

7 OnBoard Anurag Jain Anurag is the owner of Access Healthcare which is an outsourcer of healthcare information technology. He also founded Anavo Global, a social entrepreneurship incubator, which created Laurus Edutech, a company that trains over 30,000 students in India in vocational skills. Anavo is also developing models to provide affordable housing, with some homes priced around $1,500. Anurag left Dell in 2011, where he led a global team of more than 18,000 professionals. Anurag also founded three highly successful IT services outsourcing businesses: Brigade, Vision Healthsource, and IQ Backoffice, which were sold between 2002 and Anurag holds an MBA from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Science degree from the Birla Institute of Technology and Sciences, Pilani, India. Courtney Plumlee (LPA president Ex-Officio) After graduating from college with a degree in marketing, Courtney worked as a booking agent and personal development trainer for a modeling agency. She has been a special events planner for many years and enjoyed serving Lamplighter as LPA president. She has served as co-chair of Carnival and of the Spirit Store. She and her husband Mike have two daughters who attend Lamplighter. Peyton is a third-grader, and Alexa is in second grade. Courtney owns two jewelry companies, Glam Girl and Glam Kids. Linda Hodgson Linda became involved with Lamplighter when her daughter, Sarah 10, started in pre-k. Since that time, Linda has been a volunteer and advocate for the school. Linda has volunteered her time to other organizations including the National Charity League, where she volunteers with her daughter, Sarah, and The Hockaday School, where Sarah is a seventh grader. Linda is a graduate of Baylor University and is a CPA. She has previously held management and board positions in finance and banking. LAMPPOST 7

8 CoverStory The annual Lamplighter Carnival came to town on October 4. This year s event, the Lamplighter Jubilee, was a funfilled royal affair that celebrated the School s 60 illuminating years. The event, which was attended by hundreds from the Lamplighter community, was also a culmination of the School s shoe drive for Souls4Soles, an organization that collects shoes to give relief to victims of poverty around the world. Over the past two years, Lamplighter has donated more than 4,500 pairs of shoes to the non-profit group. Lamplighter Jubilee was the theme of the Carnival which was also a celebration of the School s 60 years of igniting young minds whimsically based on the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. In staff, students, and parents, it was clear that the importance of family is recognized and celebrated by our extraordinary school, Hill added. She described an atmosphere that didn t just feel like a school carnival or a Jubilee it had the warmth of a longawaited family reunion. Since its founding, the School s motto has been, A student is not a vessel to be filled, but a lamp to be lighted. This is still true today, described Lamplighter Board Chair Alex Sharma. Classrooms and outdoor education areas are filled with hands-on exploration as faculty works with children to deliver serious education wrapped in the wonder of childhood, he explained. Lamplighter Celebrates 60th Anniversary with Festive Jubilee Carnival addition to myriad Union Jack designs, jousting with toy swords, and other olde British influences, the Jubilee featured many good old-fashioned American Carnival basics including a Ferris wheel (for the first time), Eurobungee, face painting, and hamburgers. Head of School Dr. Joan Hill described jubilee as synonymous with celebration, and explained that the community has much to cheer and celebrate. The School s founders, Natalie Murray and Sandy Swain, often wrote about the enthusiasm that a community feels when everyone is working and playing together. Carnival is one of those special events that represents the very best of Lamplighter. The theme of Jubilee was quite fitting as the School celebrated 60 years of educating young learners. Seeing the interaction between faculty, For decades, the Carnival has been characterized as a celebration of the School s history and traditions and a can t-miss event for families. But it s also a special time for alumni to catch up with each other and with former teachers, explained Lamplighter s parent-teacher association president Courtney Plumlee. Carnival-goers stepped right up and tested their skills on the midway with games such as ring the bottle. From the Ferris wheel to the petting zoo to the music played by well-known Dallas DJ and parent/alum, Lucy Wrubel, it was indeed a day to remember, said Carnival Co-Chair and parent, Aimee Whitaker. Students danced to the DJ s favorite tunes while volunteers used face paint to transform children into farm animals and superheroes. 8 LAMPPOST

11 FacultyFocus nture Children s Garden For the past year and a half, Lamplighter has been nurturing a relationship with the Dallas Arboretum. That s one reason the School has been fortunate enough to hold its last two Back to School picnics there. But there is much more underway. In addition to having access to the incredible botanic gardens, the School is working with the new Arboretum Children s Adventure Garden, collaborating on lesson plans, integrating curriculum, and of course, planning student field trips to benefit from the Garden s focus on teaching life and earth sciences. 12 FacultyFocus In fact, the relationship Lamplighter has with the Arboretum s new attraction goes deeper. A gift from Howard and Rory Meyers led to the naming of the Rory Meyers Children s Garden and, in particular, the Meyers sons contribution to that gift. Craig and Kevin Meyers are graduates of Lamplighter, and their mother, Rory, was past president of the LPA. On a toasty afternoon in late September, faculty visited the Children s Garden for a tour and experienced the stunning grounds first hand. Tour guide Maria Conroy, the Arboretum s Vice President of Education and Research, said that when the idea for the children s garden came up almost 17 years ago, organizers wanted it to meet a need in the community by helping to boost science test scores. What we did was look at what the big science concepts were for each age group in life and earth science. For instance, to teach kids ages 5 to 7 how plants live and grow, designers created oversize plant replicas, including a 16-foot-tall one that uses lights to show how water moves from the roots up to the flower. To teach different flower parts, they created a puzzle with oversize parts forming a three-dimensional flower. The new Children s Garden at the Arboretum showcases environmental science education for our youngest learners in a unique new way, commented Lamplighter Head of School Joan Hill.

13 FacultyFocus Forever Learners There s a special term for our teachers. Similar to that which we strive to achieve with our students, Lamplighter faculty is committed to forever learning. We think there has never been a time in human history when it was more vital, or, indeed, more pleasurable and rewarding, to carry through one s life a predisposition to learn, to grow intellectually and emotionally, and to adapt to the world s relentless and ever-faster changes. Here are a few examples of Lamplighter faculty pursuing advanced degrees: Catherine Lynn started her master s program last spring. She is studying in a cohort group that meets weekly through Concordia University of Texas at Austin and will be in all of her classes with the same group of 20. Lynn is the only one in this program teaching in a private school. She will earn a Masters in Education with a concentration in Educational Administration (with option to test for Principal Certification). This program will wrap in spring of Lynn said she chose to pursue this degree after a decade of considering how to best use what I ve learned in my career. In the final 16 weeks of this program, she will have the privilege of working on a practicum under the guidance of one of Lamplighter s own administrators. New kindergarten assistant, Jennifer Moore is studying for a Master of Science in library science with school library certification at the University of North Texas in Denton. (Not pictured: Jennifer Moore) degree after observing a school librarian she greatly admired in action and fell in love with the profession. She is excited to someday collaborate with teachers, teach research skills, integrate technology, and turn the Media Center into an information hub for the school community. Nicole Martin is pursuing a masters in curriculum and instruction at Texas A&M University and is expected to graduate in May Martin decided to pursue this degree because she has taught for 10 years and wanted to make sure she did not become too comfortable with my level of understanding. Martin challenged herself to do more. Here at Lamplighter, our curriculum is dynamic, ever evolving. We are constantly reevaluating what, why, and how we are teaching. She says learning about curriculum and instruction will provide her with a stronger foundation as well as a framework for her experiences. I am challenging myself to deepen my level of understanding. I am excited about what is to come from this program. Jody Stout s long-term goal is to acquire a Doctorate in Humanities at the University of Texas at Dallas. She hopes to earn this degree by the spring of Having completed her master s degree in 2009, she still felt there was so much out there left to explore. While graduate work is very demanding, the benefits are always surprising and gratifying she explained. Studies in humanities, like Lamplighter s approach to learning, require an integrated approach. The path always leads to original connections and broad understanding. Sheryll Orbase is working on a master s in educational leadership through Western New Mexico University and is expected to earn her degree in Orbase chose to pursue her master s because she says she is committed to long-term professional development. I think the program will help me expand my knowledge about schools and learn more about the current practices and effective curricula and instructional programs. Kindergarten teacher Lindsey Weems is studying for a Master of Education in curriculum and instruction through the University of San Diego and expects to graduate in Weems chose to pursue this advanced degree because she is a lifelong learner who wants to better herself by becoming the best teacher I can be. She says that having the opportunity to expand my mind is one of life s most rewarding pursuits and that a graduate education offers the opportunity to do all that and in a structured way while delivering great personal satisfaction. 14 FacultyFocus Captivated by Klingenstein Lamplighter teacher Ana Casanova (right) is the only elementary school Texan among 75 Klingenstein participants. This summer, Lamplighter gave me a life-changing professional development experience. I had the opportunity to spend two weeks at Columbia University s Klingenstein Summer Institute. Being surrounded by a cohort of enthusiastic, budding educators, living in a tight-knit, dormitory-style community, and being mentored by master teachers from unique campuses much like Lamplighter, I was able to reflect, refine, and reimagine. Columbia has a foundation and department for research, leadership, and training named the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership. This department focuses on the culture and challenges in the independent school world and serves as a hub for teachers, administrators, and heads of school both nationally and internationally. Each summer, Klingenstein offers 75 fellowships to early-career independent school teachers from around the world. Before I left, I collected data about Lamplighter s student population and researched aspects of our campus. This allowed me to digest the information and trends we were exploring in our course work. I also wrote essays and read textbooks about brain research, inquiry-based learning, and curriculum development in regard to diversity. As a teacher, it is powerful to become a student again, even if just for a few weeks. While there, I lived alongside my fellow students, studied in the library, attended lectures, and discussed coursework including curriculum design, diversity, leadership, institutional culture/ change, and professional development. I was challenged to manage my time, express ideas I had from experiences with my students at Lamplighter, and to put meaning behind each decision in my classroom and lesson planning. I have never returned to school feeling so refreshed and excited to try new ideas, share suggestions with my fellow faculty members and teammates, and to set up my classroom in a student-centered way. I am so grateful for this opportunity. To have been selected to represent Lamplighter in this way was a true honor. This Is Africa Mattingly Award winner Sarah Mathews volunteers in South Africa By Sarah Mathews, Lamplighter Pre-Kindergarten Teacher And the winner for this year is. Sarah Mathews! I was so excited to hear my name and win the award funding my twoweek wildlife volunteer experience in South Africa. I knew the adventure would be one I would never forget. Here is a page from the journal I kept July 18, 2013 Like clockwork, Toby the donkey awakens us with his alarming bray. It is 7a.m., barely over 40 F outside, and time to pull myself away from the warmth of the heat blanket in order to begin work for the day. Each day starts with the feeding of the horses and cleaning of their stables. Now, these horses are not kept as pets, but rather as food for the 16 big cats (11 lions, 2 tigers, 2 cheetahs, and 1 leopard) and lone hyena that reside on the farm at Glen Afric. Upon arrival, we were warned never to grow overly attached to the horses, as their residence at the property is only temporary. However, their fate weighs on you as you attempt to provide comfort for them in their final days. Following stable duty, we break for breakfast. Knowing this is one of very few opportunities to contact the outside world while at the sanctuary, I grab my phone from my room and begin the hike up the rocky incline to the lodge. Breakfast takes place in the kitchen and consists of cereals and toast. The room is quiet as we eat, as most volunteers spend the whole hour on their phones using the wireless Internet and phone apps such as Viber and Whatsapp to communicate with family and friends back home. With full bellies and happy hearts, we head back down to our cabin to await our fate for the day. Will we eradicate milkweed plants with pick axes? Take the young lion, Sheba, for a walk? Detour off site to fetch grass? Les, the head ranger, arrives and instructs us to grab wheelbarrows and spades and follow her. We watch and wait as Cosmos and Bainet lure the large cats into their cages with meat. The tigers are the most willing to comply; the lions the least. Once the animals are secured, we begin our morning tasks of cleaning the cages (or camps). I offer to help pick up the feces while others set about 14 LAMPPOST

15 FacultyFocus scavenging for bones. In one wheelbarrow, we collect all the bones that are scattered over the ground from feedings, and the other wheelbarrow becomes a collection of excrement. We spend the remainder of the morning cleaning camps and work up quite an appetite by lunchtime. Today I ordered my favorite, a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich with chips. Again, the room is quiet as the other volunteers and I simultaneously eat and check messages. At 2p.m. we resume our work for the day. Les comes by and instructs us all to jump in the back of the old white Land Cruiser. Where are we going? we all ask. We ll see, she responded behind a smirk. We take a short drive to the owner s house which is also on the property. It is an elegant stone house with beautiful landscaping. We walk through a door which takes us directly into the kitchen. Running around are two six-week-old white lion cubs. Girls squeal with delight as the guys look on in amazement. Your job for the remainder of your time here Les begins, is to look after these lion cubs. They will need to eat three times a day. They drink from bottles and are beginning to eat meat. You need to play with them, love on them, and make sure their needs are being met. I think to myself of my friends back home who would die with envy knowing that I have just been put in charge of caring for lion cubs. I think of all the people who will never get to see such young cubs let alone touch and care for them. I think of how lucky I am. After building the cubs a home, we break for the day. I take a quick cold shower. It has been a few days since my last warm shower and even longer since I ve taken a shower more than 3 minutes long. But I love it here. This is home for the next week and a half and I am lucky. I am happy. This experience will change me forever. This is Africa, I tell myself as I head up the hill to the main lodge for dinner. Just Scratching the Surface Successful SCRATCH program extended to Early Childhood By Judith Mullens, Lamplighter Director of Early Childhood Part of the genius of Lamplighter lies in the School s building itself. Open spaces where teachers come together spontaneously as they make their paper copies or pick up classroom supplies quickly become a fertile plain for serious brainstorming, and out of that brainstorming comes new possibilities. This is how Lamplighter s STEM afterschool activities have evolved. One small seed of an idea generated by Head of School Dr. Joan Hill grew into an engaging discussion in the Lower School workroom among several teachers. A friend of Lamplighter, Marianna Verlage, majoring in Environmental Engineering at Harvard, happened to have an engineering professor begin her basic computer programming class with an introduction to SCRATCH. She offered to come to Lamplighter and meet with the School s Technology Coordinator, Kate Ogden, and other teachers interested in SCRATCH. From that first introduction, teachers began tinkering with the newly created computer program and saw its possibilities grow. It took one very curious and energetic Lamplighter teacher, Ana Casanova, to say, Yes! to starting the first SCRATCH afterschool activity. Through her explorations, the program took root. After coming back from the National Science Teachers Association Conference, Ms. Casanova and science teacher Bill Burton added WeDo Robotics to the SCRATCH activity, which then became WeDo SCRATCH 2.0. The newly created EV3 Robotics, The Next Generation, was also added to the afterschool program taught by Mr. Burton using programming similar to SCRATCH. The STEM program continues to grow. Teachers Leslie Bledsoe and Becky Logsdon began a pre-scratch activity using LEGO Simple Machine sets. Guiding students to follow the step-by-step LEGO instruction cards that look similar to SCRATCH programming, Ms. Bledsoe and Ms. Logsdon are preparing young students in kindergarten and first grade to take the next steps into computer programming. Their activity ends with a basic introduction to SCRATCH, creating a bridge to the WeDo SCRATCH 2.0 activity offered to students in second through fourth grades. The question now remains, how can we connect our students in pre-k to our STEM afterschool program? The future is full of possibilities. Maybe we will meet in one of Lamplighter s open spaces and collaborate! LAMPPOST 15

He sent it to three outside readers for positive reviews before presenting it to the TCU Press Board for approval. Many, many months later, Texas Chili Oh My! was approved for publication. Patricia Vermillion and Jezabel Guadalupe The Three Little Pigs is one of my alltime favorite fairy tales. There are many retellings of this story: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf, just to name a few. I had an idea about writing a story for children using the facts and symbols of Texas. Applying The Three Little Pigs as the backdrop for my idea, I developed a similar version of this fairytale, adding a Texas twist. Researching information about our great state, I sprinkled Texas facts throughout the tale. After a year of rewriting and rewriting AND rewriting! I submitted Texas Chili? Oh My! to a Louisiana publishing company. They held on to the story for about three months and decided it did not meet their needs at that particular time. As a result, I received my first rejection letter Ugh! 16 LAMPPOST Several teachers gathered in my office for a cup of Starbucks coffee and book discussion when Mr. White asked, Mrs. Vermillion, have you thought about a Spanish version of Texas Chili? Oh My!? I immediately telephoned the editor at TCU Press who agreed this was a spectacular idea! Our own Jezabel Guadalupe, of course, would be the perfect Spanish translator. The Spanish and English versions of Texas Chili? Oh My! became available for purchase from TCU Press at the end of September. Barnes and Noble and Amazon received their editions on October 4. So try some of my Texas Chili? Oh My! Patricia Vermillion and Marty Melton Lamplighter teacher Marty Melton and Patricia Vermillion, the School s Media Center Coordinator, wrote an article that was published in the October 2013 issue of Teacher Librarian magazine. The educators decided to write the article entitled Tips and Tactics: Library- Classroom Collaboration Stimulates Reading, Teaches So Much More because they find co-teaching during fourth grademedia center time to be so effective and so much fun! The article is an overview of a project they have done for several years. This year they modified it to include one new feature that involves student presentations of book talks with the goal of inspiring other classmates to read new books, explained Melton. The article features the details of the collaboration, including the addition of how students videotape each other and then assign each book talk video a QR code so parents and students throughout the Lamplighter community can view the book talk on ipads when they visit the School s Media Center. According to the magazine s publisher, Edward Kurdyla, Jr., Because the article provides models and activities to be implemented, I think the way you structured the booktalks, although still rather simple appearing, is terrific and really teaches so many things on so many levels. 17 FacultyFocus Freshmen Faculty Lamplighter welcomes six new teachers her bachelor s degree in educational psychology with a minor in dance from Hendrix College in Arkansas. The lifelong learner received her Master of Education from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Brown teaches kindergarten and has experience in dance. She teaches two after-school dance classes to both early childhood and lower school students. Pictured left to right: Olivia Gambir, Caroline Turner, and Cara Hicks First grade teacher Olivia Gambir earned a bachelor s degree from Hamilton College and a master s degree from Manhattanville College. Originally from Connecticut, Gambir came to Lamplighter from Collegiate School in New York City, a boys school on the Upper West Side. She has experience teaching reading, math, and social studies. Gambir, who moved to Dallas because she is engaged to Dallasite Cole Claliborn, also worked at Greens Farm Academy in Fairfield, Connecticut, where she tutored Spanish, taught summer programs, and coached hockey. Dallasite Caroline Turner, a kindergarten assistant, received a Bachelor of Arts in theatre performance and English literature from the National Theater Institute. She was awarded the James Huston Memorial Award for performance quality and dedication to the arts. Turner, who speaks Ukrainian, Russian, and Spanish, received a certificate to teach English as a foreign language and directed theater programming in the Ukraine for the U.S. Peace Corps. Recently she was a teaching artist for Main Street Theater in Houston. Turner teaches a Night Light class on stage makeup and costumes. Cara Hicks, a native of Houston, teaches pre-k All-Day 4s with Rachel Shumann. She is married to husband Cash, and has two children, Colin and Corbin. Hicks graduated with honors with a bachelor s degree in education from the University of North Texas. Most recently she was a third through fifth grade reading and math specialist, and taught first grade with the McKinney ISD. Hannah Brown is an original Dallasite and attended The Hockaday School from first through eighth grade and later graduated from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in the dance cluster. Brown received Our newest teacher, Kirby Young, is a kindergarten assistant who supports Hannah Brown s kindergarten class. Young graduated from Texas Christian University in 2007 and after working for several years in the corporate world, decided to follow her passion, which is education. Young returned to college to earn her teaching credentials and she is excited for the opportunity to work at Lamplighter. Fidelma Titus, originally from Galway, Ireland, attended high school in Tallahassee, Florida. She will be working with Lindsey Weems as a kindergarten assistant and doing early care. Titus received her Bachelor of Arts in art therapy from Springhill College in Mobile, Alabama, where she assisted in the university s admission office. Most recently, Titus was a teaching assistant at Christ the King School in the Park Cities. She is married to Daniel and they have a oneyear-old son, Liam. 18 CampusNews Bully Pulpit Parenting expert headlines new season of Parent Perks Best Foot Forward School community donates more than 4,500 shoes to Soles4Souls. After a successful two-year partnership, the Lamplighter community has donated more than 4,500 pairs of shoes to Soles4Souls, an organization that collects shoes to provide relief to victims of abject suffering and poverty. In September, students beamed with pride as they tossed their shoes into boxes filled with Nikes, Stride Rites and even Mom s stilettos during a special Hootenanny shoe-drive kick-off. The group was greeted by fourth grader Peydinn Stockham and teacher Liz Curlin. The two discussed the many pairs of shoes they owned and how different their lives would be if they had only one pair. Curlin referenced the book Those Shoes and the difference between need and want. What an incredible day for Peydinn, said her mother, Kiersten Stockham. This was something she will remember for the rest of her life! Next Buddy Teaster, the CEO of Soles4Souls, addressed the group. He spoke about how Soles4Souls fights poverty around the world by distributing shoes both via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities. Afterward, he answered fourth graders questions. The Lamplighter School is committed to Soles4Souls and its endeavor to deliver shoes to over 300 million children around the world, said Head of School, Dr. Joan Hill. She expressed gratitude to the families who generously donated to support this important project. To reinforce the School s commitment to the organization, Lamplighter teacher Debbie Herskowitz and Director of Operations Marynell Murphy traveled to Costa Rica last March where they spent a week distributing shoes to those in need. This meaningful service project touched the lives of many at Lamplighter, said Herskowitz who was able to participate in Soles4Souls at a different level, by traveling to Costa Rica. The process of collecting, sorting, boxing, and shipping shoes to those in need was an interesting process and became real when we actually handed out the shoes to the children in Costa Rica, she added. After their return, the School celebrated Earth Day in April with a green Hootenanny. Everyone congregated in the Auditorium, where they capped the School s community service project by watching a Soles4Souls video. Through the video, the students were able to see the children from Costa Rica who benefitted from the collection, explained Hill. Parent Perks, Lamplighter s parent education series, launched its third season in September with well-known author and expert in parenting, teaching, and bullying, Barbara Coloroso. Perks provides an opportunity for families to hear from educators, teachers, psychologists, and writers. Parent Catie Enrico, mother of second grade twins, said the series puts my parenting skills on refresh as it provides nationally recognized speakers who are experts in parenting. She feels Lamplighter families are lucky to have this resource as part of our parenting curriculum. Coloroso, who first visited Lamplighter in 2006, explained to faculty and parents that while some bigotry is rooted in ignorance, most is targeted bullying. This is about being cruel and getting pleasure from someone else s pain. The School invited the former Franciscan nun to present themes from her bestselling books, including The Bully, the Bullied and the Bystander and Parenting with Wit and Wisdom. She has appeared on Oprah, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, and NPR and has been featured in the New York Times, Time, and Newsweek. The speaker was welcomed by the School s counselor, Jill Weidman, who explained that we spend much time discussing a child s social-emotional wellbeing. Assistant Head for Academics Vicki Raney said Lamplighter is committed to making the School a safe and caring environment for all students. 19 AlumniSpotlight Class of 2005 Colleges Graduate Admissions Lamplighter Holds First Alumni Panel Discussion Last spring Lamplighter hosted the School s first alumni panel discussion. More than 100 heard graduates discuss how their early childhood experiences influenced their future education and professional choices. Alumni President Kyle Ford introduced the eight alumni and facilitated. In addition to the five high school students, three other graduates traveled to Dallas to talk about their years at Lamplighter, including Steven Clark, M.D., Stephanie Sanford, Ph.D., and Marc Wallenstein, J.D. When asked what Lamplighter means to them, Wallenstein, who earned his law degree at Yale University and is currently employed with the U.S. Department of Defense, answered how teachers encouraged a love of learning and he had joyful memories about school. Sanford said Lamplighter gave her a passion for learning and the confidence to handle any situation. Clark, a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta who is currently undertaking a plastic surgery fellowship at Tulane University in New Orleans, explained how Lamplighter encouraged free thinking and that it s OK to do things in a non-traditional way. Later the young alumni, including two current Hockaday seniors, Katie Payne and Grace Gilker, ESD senior Katie Kerrigan (now a freshman at Wake Forest), current Greenhill senior Nick Kraus, and Cistercian junior Joe Durst, took the stage and answered questions posed by members of the audience and by Ford. When asked about the difference between fellow high school students and those who attended Lamplighter, Kraus described how the top four students in his class are all Lamplighter grads. Gilker agreed and said, We are prepared academically. We take initiative. Lamplighter gives students the skills to be confident so you can do what you want to do. Followed by applause, she continued, Every day we did something incredible. Jack fondly remembers playing Mr. Breitfeller s guitar every morning and still enjoys playing the guitar today. Lea Meyers 09 continues her educational journey at Greenhill School where her academic honors include high honor roll and a gold medal on the National Spanish Exam. Lea competes in team gymnastics and is a volunteer coach for her gymnastics team. She fondly remembers the Carnival, the Opera, senior parade, Lamplighter Layers, and senior jackets. Gunnar Olsen 09 attended McCulloch Intermediate School after leaving Lamplighter in 2004, and entered Parish Episcopal School for eighth grade. Tres fondly remembers his teacher Ms. Arneson (now Ms. Shulman). Whit Payne 09 will continue his studies at St. Mark s School of Texas where he is active in lacrosse, football, and basketball. He also serves on the Community Service Board. Whit s special memories of Lamplighter include Lamplighter Layers, Annie, and the Opera. His favorite teachers were Mrs. Beddow, Mrs. McCartor, Mrs. Peters, and Mrs. Hollway. Abi Price 09 is continuing her educational journey at Lakehill Preparatory School where she is involved in the National Junior Honor Society, choir, musical theater, and volleyball. Abi s favorite things about Lamplighter include the 4th grade trip to Austin, raising the chickens, and Mrs. McCartor. Alex Shaw 09 will continue her studies at The Hockaday School where she plays basketball and is a member of the school choir. Her special memories of Lamplighter include Mrs. McCartor, Mr. B, and science class. Emma Siegel 09 will continue her educational journey at The Hockaday School. Matthew Sims 09 will continue his studies at the Episcopal School of Dallas where he has won many awards on the Math Science team. His volunteer service includes Operation Kindness, Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, and soccer. Scott Smythe 09 graduated from Bentley School in Berkeley, California, after leaving Lamplighter in He is currently attending St. Mark s School of Texas where he is involved in soccer, cross country, and track. Scott has fond memories of the Hootenannies and the Carnival. Jared Steinhart 09 graduated middle school from St. Mark s School of Texas and currently attends Highland Park High School. Jared received the Citizenship Award and was on the Community Service Board at St. Mark s. Jared remembers every day being the best day ever at Lamplighter. Benjamin Stromberg 09 will continue his studies at Greenhill School. He has fond memories of Lamplighter including the animals, the playground, science class, the Opera, drama, and recess. Zayna Syed 09 will continue her educational journey at Greenhill School where she plays soccer and tennis. Zayna spends a lot of her time figure skating. During the summer she volunteers at The da Vinci School and is involved in the Muslim Youth of North America (MYNA). Zayna s special memories of Lamplighter include the egg selling business, the Pioneer project in second grade, the Opera, and all of her amazing teachers! 26 Report of Annual Giving Your commitment and generosity allowed us to successfully complete the Campaign for the Future and take the Annual Fund and Auction to new levels. Dear Lamplighter Community, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Trustees, Life Trustees, parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff members, and friends who made another extraordinary year at Lamplighter. In the pages ahead, you will see that your commitment and generosity allowed us to successfully complete the Campaign for the Future and take the Annual Fund and Auction to new levels. The fiscal year began with a flurry of activity that continued into the summer as the final call for participation in the Campaign for the Future came with a 1:1 matching gift challenge by an anonymous donor. By the end of June and six weeks into the challenge, the campaign surpassed its $12.5 million goal. Today, a beautiful donor wall honoring all contributors graces the front entrance of the school. Other highlights of the year include: Growth of the Annual Fund continues to be a priority of The Lamplighter School and this year, the Annual Fund scaled new heights with annual gifts exceeding $510,000. Parent participation set a record at 95% with all Pre-K classes, faculty and staff, Trustees, and the Annual Fund Committee achieving 100% participation. This year s Auction, themed, Lights, Camera, Auction! brought parents to the gala dressed in their finest 1940s couture while raising over $325,000 for the land fund. More than 100 grandparents attended a special grandparent luncheon hosted by the Head of School last fall. Increased numbers of grandparents participated in volunteer activities throughout the school year and enjoyed events like the Halloween picnic and Grandest Friends Day. Afternoon reunions were held for the alumni classes of 2006 and 2009, and the Class of 73 gathered for a full weekend of activities. Alumni of all ages participated in community outreach projects and the Young Alumni Car Wash raised over $4,300. The Strategic Plan, presented to the Board last September by the Strategic Initiatives Committee, was approved. In January, a Pre-Campaign Task Force was assembled by the Head of School to undertake the next steps in the implementation of the plan. The Task Force will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees in September.
