NAJA is now offering a two-hour pre-exam review session with the Chair of Education, Deborah Finleon. The first five lessons of the Appraisal Studies Course will be reviewed in outline format, with an opportunity for you to ask questions, get clarification, and discuss troublesome concepts in depth all the same day as the exam is given. Are you enrolled in the Appraisal Studies Course? This PowerPoint review offers a chance to interact with your fellow students and hear the course material presented in a classroom setting, highlighting all of the major topics covered in Lessons 1 through 5. This unique opportunity is available for only 20 students! On Friday, August 11th, take the review from 10 AM to noon. What influenced the design and transition from one period to the next? And, how do you recognize jewelry from each era? This presentation will cover the evolution of jewelry design in the 1940s and 1950s, placed in historical context, nationally and internationally. We will explore the dramatic changes from WWII to the Post War 50s. The artistic, social, economic and political influences on design, the supply chain and fabrication of jewelry. We will explore the emerging artistic movements, fashion and how the jewels were worn. By comparing and contrasting designs from each era, attendees will have enough information to comfortably date jewelry from each time period. Looking Backwards Again: Archaeological Revival, Etruscan Revival, and Renaissance Revival Jewels of the 19th Century. - Duncan Parker, FGA During the 19th Century, Europeans discovered that there was rather a lot of history to be explored. Jewels and decorative items unearthed during excavations in parts of western Italy, including Pompeii, provided inspiration for artists, architects, and designers, jewelers blended influences from all disciplines. Under the inspiration of earlier ages, designers experimented with forms, styles and techniques from periods of history, particularly focusing on high points of design, including Etruscan, Ancient Egyptian, Ancient Roman, and the Renaissance. A growing middle class found themselves able to purchase decorative items of beauty produced by the artists of this time, allowing for artists to find a wide and eager client base. The names Castellani and Giuliano are preeminent jewellers of the period, and we will explore work by these houses and by their contemporaries. Sunday, August 13, 2017 Archaeogemology and the Appraisal Field - Çiğdem Lüle, PhD, FGA, GIA GG Archaeogemology combines aspects of gemology, archaeology and geology in order to identify ancient gems and determine their mineralogical and geographical origin. This presentation aims to provide a detailed introduction to archaeogemology and will discuss details of how gems were interpreted and traded by the ancient civilizations from a mineralogist point of view. The talk will explain how gemologists and appraisers can develop a better understanding of gems and minerals used in different eras. The presentation will also include an illustrated discussion of early gem treatments and how these evolved into the treatment techniques encountered today. Appraising the Big 3 Considerations when Valuing Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. - Stuart Robertson, GIA GG Collectively the big-3 account for nearly 80% of the colored stone market by value. As a result, appraisers are more likely to encounter assignments that involve the valuation of a ruby, sapphire or emerald than they are any other colored gemstone. But how do we approach that assignment? What are the value determinants of each? The speaker s nearly 20 years of experience analyzing price trends in the colored stone market indicate that quality is only part of the equation. Origin, treatments and how the material was sourced can also significantly influence the price of a gem material. This presentation will discuss these and other considerations in the context of Appraising the Big-3.

(Appraising Jewelry, that is) - Sherris Cottier Shank Historically, carved gems were once considered of less value than facetted gems, because they were often produced to use up inferior grade gem rough. Those days are over. Gem carvers now work in all grades of rough, including the finest, and the art form has attracted some of the most talented craftspeople in the world. Using photo essays to illustrate her own personal process, Sherris will walk us step by step through choosing the rough, shaping the preform, carving the design, sanding and finishing the gem. She will give us a bird s eye view of the problems she encounters and the (sometimes painful) decisions she must make. Seeing this labor intensive process will shed light on good finishing versus bad finishing, the possibilities of re-cutting older gems to increase their beauty, and establishing a baseline value for the carved gems you encounter.
