2 We The People News Page 2 Port Pushes Flint Hills Pipeline Deal that Threatens 7,000 Jobs With approximately 18,000 unemployed workers the publically owned Port, whose purpose is supposed to be economic and job development for the area, has stated they will sell the small pier and part of the wharf at Naval Station Ingleside for $7.5 million dollars to Flint Hills to expand its Ingleside terminal. That deal may kill a $110 million proposal for Naval Station Ingleside, a $30 million bid for Harbor Island and up front money to upgrade infrastructure and future property tax revenues for Ingleside from Canyon Logistics and that would just be the beginning. Oil Boom brings unexpected Conflicts Oil and gas is booming in Texas and with prices rising fast towards $100 a barrel the rush is on. At Naval Station Ingleside that boom has brought conflict is the pursuit of limited infrastructure. Expanded exploration and production of oil and natural gas in the Eagle Ford shale formation, which stretches from Webb thru Gonzalez Counties and expanded deep water drilling in the western Gulf, point to a possible return to the glory days of Corpus Christi s booming economy before the oil bust in the 1980s. Port Fourchon drives South Louisiana Economy; Could it happen at NSI? Port Fourchon (pronounced foo-shon) lies on a former outlet of the Mississippi River a few miles south of Grand Isle, Louisiana on Lafourche Pass less than two miles from the Gulf of Mexico. In 2006 the port managed $63.4 billion in oil and gas (based on oil at $66/boe). Between the service activity and the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP) 15% of all U.S. oil and gas imports and 90% of all deep water drilling and production is done from Port Fourchon. Canyon Supply & Logistics has big plans for its proposed complex at Naval Station Ingleside and Harbor Island; it wants to duplicate Port Fourchon here. Port has Chance to Prove Leadership with Canyon/Koch Decision. The Port of Corpus Christi is owned by the taxpayers. While it is funded by revenues it generates from users, its existence and purpose is to increase employment and economic activity in the area. In fact the Port s own requested legislation (SB ) regarding the sale of NSI listed increased employment as the number one reason to give them the authority to sell without competitive bidding. Then why are they even considering trading 10,000 jobs for 15? 20 TH ANNUAL SALUTE TO WOMEN VETERANS The Salute to Women Veterans is an annual event sponsored by the South Texas Veterans Health Care System Women s Health Program and is held to honor and celebrate the service of Women Veterans. With 155,625 Women Veterans, Texas has the 2 nd largest population of Women Veterans in the United States. The 20 th Annual Salute to Women Veterans will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration begins at noon with the program beginning promptly at 1:00 p.m. The Salute to Women Veterans will be held at the Kathleen C. Cailloux Theatre located at 910 Main Street in Kerrville, Texas. Activities will include refreshments, door prizes, health information booths, a Veteran memorabilia display, a display of memory quilts and entertainment. Gifts will be given to the first 150 Women Veterans who register. Additional drawings for door prizes will also be available. ALL Veterans and their families are invited and there is no charge.
