1 Preservation Pennsylvania Commonwealth Impact Report 2016 Mission Statement Preservation Pennsylvania through creative partnerships, targeted educational and advocacy programs, advisory assistance, and special projects assists Pennsylvania communities to protect and utilize the historic resources they want to preserve for the future.

2 About Us Preservation Pennsylvania is the commonwealth s only statewide, private, nonprofit membership organization dedicated to the protection of historically and architecturally significant properties. The organization was created in 1982 as the Preservation Fund of Pennsylvania to operate a revolving fund that would assist in the acquisition and rehabilitation of historic properties. Since its incorporation, the organization has evolved and now organizes the Statewide Conference on Heritage, hosts the Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards, and publishes an annual list of endangered properties in Pennsylvania At Risk in addition to managing a revolving fund and intervention fund. Preservation Pennsylvania also participates in educational programs and advocacy initiatives, conducts special projects, and offers on-site assistance to people throughout the commonwealth. You ll see some of Preservation Pennsylvania s highlights from 2016 in this annual report. We thank our members and those who have been sponsors and made donations. We couldn t help people preserve places without your support! Preservation Pennsylvania Board of Directors Peter Benton, RA Spring City Chairman Nathaniel Guest, Esq. 3 From the Chairman Preservation Pennsylvania is a small organization, which seems odd in trying to serve a state as large as ours. With a staff of five, we are no larger than many nonprofit organizations in local communities. We thrive because of our relationships with others working in historic preservation, community revitalization, and related endeavors at the local and regional levels across Pennsylvania. Our state has an impressive network of individuals who are working creatively to enhance the character of their communities and landscapes. Sometimes these endeavors are organized as state, county, or local programs, but often they are the result of the individual actions of citizens committed to the places where they live or work. Our role is to provide assistance and support at the state level bridging the boundaries of townships, boroughs and counties, helping to connect communities to each other so that those active at the grassroots level can learn from the challenges and successes of their neighbors. We appreciate your support. We thank you for the work that you do in making Pennsylvania s communities and landscapes great places to be. We look forward to continuing our work together. Please be actively involved with Preservation Pennsylvania so that we can extend our network and achieve more in the years to come. Thank you! Peter Benton Chairman, Preservation Pennsylvania From the Executive Director Friends: This was a year about connection. We traveled to communities across the state with the PA SHPO, hearing your preservation wishes and concerns at listening sessions for the state preservation plan. We invited folks to network at the annual state conference in Lewisburg s charming downtown where attendees strolled the sidewalks to admire historic architecture and visit small businesses that are the lifeblood of a local economy. The Pennsylvania Historic Preservation Awards were celebrated in a landmark hotel in downtown York, where several guests thanked us for giving them a reason to explore the city for the first time ever. Connections between people and place are the foundation of historic preservation! In 2016 we celebrated 50 years since the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act, signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966, and many conversations among preservationists were about making connections between past and present, celebrating our past successes and planning ahead for the next 50 years. Connection is an important part of our mission. Those efforts range from connecting with locals about a preservation crises to fill the gap between knowledge and need to advocating to protect or enhance legislation that helps protect and preserve great historic places throughout the commonwealth. In the year ahead, we look forward to connecting with you. Mindy Crawford Executive Director 2016 Preservation Pennsylvania Commonwealth Impact Report 3

4 ducation From HARBs to historical societies across the state, Preservation Pennsylvania offers educational opportunities and workshops that help people understand the value of the special places in their community and how to protect them for the future. Our signature event is the annual Pennsylvania Statewide Conference on Heritage that draws professionals and preservationists together in one location to learn from and inspire one another PENNSYLVANIA STATEWIDE CONFERENCE ON HERITAGE LEWISBURG a B This year s annual preservation conference offered river town walking tours, meet & eat social dining, movie night, the plenary, a reception at the Campus Theatre and a choice of 11 educational sessions, plus the first-ever one-day Symposium on Flooding and Pennsylvania s Historic River Towns. The conference drew 265 preservationists, who descended on the river town of Lewisburg, Pa., home to Bucknell University and the Campus Theatre (which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2016). The conference celebrated the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act with several sessions, such as Digging Deep: 50 Years of Section 106 Archaeology in Pennsylvania and Preservation50: What Does it Mean to You?, devoted to highlighting past accomplishments and the evolution of the field. Conference-goers also heard about perennial challenges, like lead paint remediation, identifying challenging architectural forms, town & gown relations, and in sessions such as Community Revitalization: Preservation Gut Check looking at the preservation tools, planning, design and financing solutions that make projects happen. In between conference events, visitors were able to enjoy Lewisburg as a living laboratory of preservation issues, moving between three downtown venues along Market Street, admiring historic architecture, and visiting local restaurants, galleries and shops (Purity Candy, founded in 1907, was a favorite!). A Preservationists in town for the conference helped celebrate the Campus Theatre s 75th birthday! Our movie night treat, sponsored by GAI Consultants, offered George Washington Slept Here, a vintage comedy about the challenges of saving an old house. B Working at the conference each year, interns gain experience and have the opportunity to meet industry professionals. The 2016 conference also gave college students a chance to share their research at a session called Lightning Round: Fresh Perspectives on Current Topics. C Some sessions took place in the community space at the Bucknell University Barnes & Noble Bookstore. This successful tax credit project transformed the building that had once been C. Dreisbach s Sons Hardware Store. C Preservation Pennsylvania Commonwealth Impact Report

8 aving Places The core of our mission is to provide assistance in protecting and utilizing historic resources that communities want to save for the future. In 2016, we traveled across the state with the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office staff to host listening sessions that will inform the new statewide preservation plan. We ve answered the call and offered free technical assistance in almost all of the state s 67 counties. We published a guide to preserving historic windows that won rave reviews. We announced the 2016 Pennsylvania At Risk list, and the eight threatened properties became our work priorities for the year. PENNSYLVANIA AT RISK LIST Anderson Brick Block, Elk County Farrandsville Furnace, Clinton County Lewistown Historic District, Mifflin County Lindenwold, Montgomery County Old Economy Bachelors Quarters, Beaver County People s Hall, Chester County St. Paul s United Methodist Church, Luzerne County West Middletown Historic District, Washington County This annual list seeks to: draw statewide attention to the plight of Pennsylvania s historic resources. promote and support local action to protect historic properties. encourage funding and legislation that supports preservation activities. Not all At Risk properties can be saved, but our track record proves that many can. Calling attention to the plight of these special places gives each one a better chance of finding the right combination of people, support and ideas the resources necessary to result in a Save! Executive Director Mindy Crawford announced the Pennsylvania At Risk list in Lewistown, where several downtown buildings were threatened with demolition to make way for a suburban-style, drive-thru drugstore. (The project proceeded and the buildings were razed.) We asked and you answered! Thank you to everyone who received our Share the Love valentines and sent in a contribution to help support our work with Pennsylvania At Risk sites. Photos above At the end of 2016, Preservation Services Director Erin Hammerstedt announced that she had accepted an offer to be the new Executive Director of Historic Harrisville, Inc., a National Historic Landmark village in New Hampshire (complete with a charming general store, an important feature for those who knew Erin s aspirations to open one of her own in Pillow, PA!). At one time or another over her eight years of working at Preservation Pennsylvania, Erin has probably visited all of Pennsylvania s 67 counties to help meet your preservation needs. We wish her well in her new adventures! [T]he recent Preservation Pennsylvania publication on historic windows is one of the best things to come out in years.
