Lagaros is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the University of Thessaly and a research associate of the National Technical University of Athens. Dr. Lagaros is an active member of the structural-engineering research community, focusing on (a) nonlinear dynamic analysis of concrete and steel structures under seismic loading, (b) performance-based earthquake engineering, (c) structural design optimization of realworld structures, (d) seismic risk and reliability analysis, (e) neural network in structural engineering, (f) fragility evaluation of reinforced concrete structures, (g) inverse problems in structural dynamics, (h) parallel and distributed computing grid computing technologies, (i) evolutionary computations and (j) geotechnical earthquake engineering.he has more than 130 publications, including 40 refereed international journal papers. He is a member of the editorial board of five international scientific journals and reviewer in nine scientific journals and 15 international conferences. Yiannis Tsompanakis has received his MSc and PhD in civil engineering from the Department of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He is currently an assistant professor of structural earthquake engineering at the Department of Applied Sciences, Technical University of Crete, Greece. He teaches undergraduate and postgradu-

He is a reviewer for archival journals, and he has participated in the organization of several international congresses. He has published over 80 research papers in international journals, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has been involved in many research and practical projects in the field of earthquake engineering and computational mechanics. His main research interests include: structural and geotechnical earthquake engineering, structural optimization, probabilistic mechanics, structural assessment, applications of artificial intelligence methods in engineering. * * * * * Giuseppe Acciani is an associate professor of electric circuits and electro-technology at Politecnico di Bari, Italy. He received the electrical engineering degree summa cum laude from the University of Bari. From 1982 to 1984 he worked for a Computer Research Centre (CSATA, Italy). In 1985 he joined the Electrical Engineering Department of the Technical University of Bari as an assistant professor, where he still works as associate professor. Currently he teaches the course Electric Circuits and Intelligent Systems for Industrial Diagnostics. His present main research interests include neural networks, in particular unsupervised networks for clustering, and soft computing for nondestructive diagnostics. Sk. Faruque Ali received a bachelor s degree in civil engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India (2003). He is currently a doctoral research student at Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. His current research interests include intelligent structural control, multiobjective optimization, control of distributed parameter systems, bridge engineering, and nonlinear dynamics. Arzhang Alimoradi, PhD, ΕΙΤ, is a senior research engineer with John Α. Martin and Associates, one of the largest structural and earthquake engineering firms in the world. Α graduate of The University of Memphis in 2004 and a Herff College of Engineering fellow, he has collaborated with researchers from the ΜΑΕ center (University of Illinois), John Α. Blume Earthquake Engineering Center (Stanford), EERL (Galtech), and CERI (The University of Memphis). He is an active member of several ASCE and EERI technical committees. Dr. Alimoradi s specialty is in the areas of inelastic nonlinear dynamic response, design optimization, strong ground-motion selection and scaling, soft computing, and seismic isolation and energy dissipation devices. Dominic Assimaki was born in Athens, Greece, in She received her BS in civil engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (Athens, Greece) in 1998, and her MS and ScD from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MIT (Cambridge, MA) in 2000 and 2004, respectively. During her doctoral studies, she also participated in the European Research Training Network SAFERR as a young researcher in GDS (Paris, January 2001-September 2002) and received a graduate research fellowship from the National Technical University of Athens (Athens, Greece, September 2002-August

After graduating from MIT, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for crustal studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara (February 2004-June 2005). In July 2005, she joined the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology as an assistant professor, where she conducts research in numerical methods in earthquake engineering and geophysics that include forward simulations of dynamic nonlinear soil response, soil-structure interaction, and scattering phenomena in heterogeneous media, as well as inverse problems. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute, the American Geophysical Union, the Seismological Society of America, the International Association for Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics, and the Southern California Earthquake Center. Alex H. Barbat is a professor of structural mechanics at the Technical University of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain. Research activity has been developed mostly in the International Center for Numerical Methods in Engineering (CIMNE), Barcelona, Spain. Current research fields include seismic damage evaluation of structures, vulnerability and risk evaluation, active and passive structural control, and evaluation of the seismic behaviour of historical structures. He has published more than 60 articles in journals and various books. He is the president of the Spanish Association of Earthquake Engineering (AEIS). He collaborated in numerous Spanish and international research projects related to the mentioned research fields, among them, many of the European Commission. Omar D. Cardona is a civil engineer of the National University of Colombia (UNC), Manizales, and doctor of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics of the Technical University of Catalonia. He is professor of the Institute of Environmental Studies of UNC, Manizales, and the University of Los Andes, Bogota. He is the former president of the Colombian Association for Earthquake Engineering and general director of the National Directorate of Risk Mitigation and Disaster Preparedness of Colombia. He is member of ACI committees 118, and 314 on computers and simplified design of RC buildings. In 2004 he was the winner of the U.N. Sasakawa Prize for Disaster Reduction. Martha L. Carreño is a civil engineer and received an MSc in structural engineering of University of Los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia. She is a PhD student and research assistant of the Technical University of Catalonia at the program of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. Her doctoral thesis is titled Innovative Techniques for the Evaluation of Seismic Risk and Its Management in Urban Centres: Ex Ante and Ex Post Actions. In the last 5 years, she has participated in several projects related to earthquake damage evaluation and disaster risk management assessment using computational intelligence techniques. She is also consultant of Ingeniar Cad/Cae Ltda. and of the Colombian Association for Earthquake Engineering. Giuseppe Leonardo Cascella received an MSc degree with honours and a PhD in electrical engineering from the Technical University of Bari, Italy (2001 and 2005, respectively). He worked with the Getrag GmbH Systemtechnik, St. Georgen, Germany, on the automatic transmission, and is currently assistant researcher with Technical University of Bari. His

Snehashish Chakraverty is working in Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, India. His research area includes computational and mathematical modelling related to vibration and building sciences. He received a PhD from IIT, Roorkee, in vibration of plates (1992). Then he went to ISVR, University of Southampton, UK (1996) and to Concordia University, Canada ( ) for PDF. He was a visiting faculty at McGill and Concordia Universities in Canada. Dr. Chakraverty has undertaken a number of national and international collaborative research projects funded by different organisations. He published 62 research papers in journals, conferences, and one textbook. Various awards and fellowships, namely, the University Gold Medals, CSIR Young Scientist Award, BOYSCAST Fellowship, and Golden Jubilee Directors Award, have been awarded to him. Dr. Chakraverty is included in Who s Who in Computational Science and Engineering, U.K. Millennium Edition of WHO s WHO IN THE WORLD of Marquis Publications, USA. He is a supervisor of number of PhD and MSc students and is also a reviewer of various journals. Christopher Μ. Foley, PhD, ΡΕ, is an associate professor of civil engineering at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He currently teaches courses in seismic analysis of structural systems, linear and nonlinear structural analysis and bridge design/analysis. He is presently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute s technical committees on compression and flexure members, optimal structural design, and emerging computing technology. He also currently sits on the American Institute of Steel Constructions Committee on Research and Connections Specification Task Committee. His primary areas of research are evolutionary computation and advanced-analysis-based design methodologies as applied in structural steel building systems. Girolamo Fornarelli received his master s degree in electronic engineer and the PhD degree in electrical engineering from the Politecnico di Bari, where he is an assistant professor. His most research interests include analysis aspects of switching circuits, practical aspects, and development of neural networks and artificial intelligence, particularly in the field of nondestructive evaluation. Ricardo O. Foschi received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Rosario, Argentina, 1962; a master s degree and PhD in applied mechanics, Stanford University, California, 1964 and 1966; and is, since 2003, Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada. He moved to this university in 1982, after working for the Canadian Government in wood mechanics research since In 1982 he was the recipient of the Marcus Wallenberg International Prize for wood products research and applications. He has maintained a strong interest in structural reliability and probabilistic methods applied to different branches of civil engineering, in particular earthquake engineering.
5 About the Authors 437 Michalis Fragiadakis graduated from the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He holds two postgraduate degrees in the field of earthquake engineering and structural dynamics (Imperial College, London) and in the structural analysis and design of structures (NTUA), and recently received his PhD from NTUA. His research activity is focused primarily on earthquake engineering and on the nonlinear analysis of structures under both dynamic and static loading conditions. Furthermore, his interests extend to structural optimization (evolutionary algorithms) and structural reliability. He has authored and co-authored in total nine journal papers and has presented a number of papers in international conference proceedings. Hitoshi Furuta is a professor in the Department of Informatics at Kansai University, Osaka, Japan. In 1980 he received his doctorate in engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. Before joining Kansai University in 1993, he worked for 18 years in the Department of Civil Engineering at Kyoto University. He was a visiting assistant professor at Purdue University, a visiting scholar at Princeton University, and a visiting professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His main areas of expertise are structural reliability, structural optimization, life-cycle cost analysis and design of bridge structures, and applications of soft computing including artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, neural network, chaos theory, and genetic algorithm. Rita Greco has been an assistant professor at Politecnico di Bari, Italy, since She received an MSc with honours in civil engineering in 1994 from Politecnico of Bari and a PhD in structural mechanics in 1999 from University of Naples, Italy. Currently, she teaches Structural Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Architecture of Bari. Her main research interests include stochastic dynamics, earthquake engineering and seismic protection techniques, vulnerability and fragility analyses, and nonlinear structural analysis. Ali Heidari received his PhD from Kerman University in Iran in 1984, and he is currently assistant professor and head of constructional office in Shahrekord University, Iran. He has published over 35 papers in international journals and conferences on structural optimization under dynamic loads. He was chosen as the distinguished graduate of Kerman University in Miguel R. Hernandez-Garcia was born in Tunja, Colombia, in He received a summa cum laude BS in civil engineering from the Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia, in 1998, an MS in structural engineering from Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia, in 2001, and an MS in structural mechanics from University of Southern California in He is pursuing the PhD degree in civil engineering at University of Southern California. Since 2003, he has been with the Structural Dynamics Group at University of Southern California, working on structural health monitoring, nonlinear system identification, statistical process monitoring, and machine learning.

Hurtado received a civil engineering degree by the National University of Colombia and a master s degree in earthquake engineering and doctoral degree in civil engineering by the Technical University of Catalonia (Spain). His theoretical research areas include nonlinear systems, stochastic systems, Monte Carlo simulation, stochastic mechanics, structural optimization, statistical learning, and artificial intelligence applications to nonlinear systems. His applied research fields are material modelling, earthquake engineering, and natural disasters. The results of these research activities have been published in leading journals like Structural Safety, Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, Journal of Structural Engineering, Archives of Computational Methods in Engineering, among others, as well as in numerous conference proceedings. He is also the author of the book Structural Reliability Statistical Learning Perspectives (Springer, 2004). Chan Ghee Koh is a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, National University of Singapore. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in His main research areas are structural dynamics, structural health monitoring, and system identification. He has more than 100 publications, including 55 refereed international journal papers. He was a recipient of the prestigious Marie Curie Fellowship (1994) awarded by the Commission of the European Communities and the IES Prestigious Publication Award (Best Paper in Theory, 1996) by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore. He was invited to deliver seven keynotes in the last 3 years including in UK and Greece. He is currently an associate editor of U.S.-based International Journal on Structural Health Monitoring, and an editorial board member of a new international journal called Journal of Smart Structures and Systems. Kazuhiro Koyama graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at Kansai University, Osaka. Japan, in 2003, and received a master s degree of informatics from Kansai University in Now he is working for NTT Comware Ltd. in Japan as a system engineer. Krystyna Kuźniar is an associate professor of structural dynamics in Pedagogical University of Cracow, Poland; in 1980 received an MSc in civil engineering from Cracow University of Technology; in 1991 received a PhD in technical sciences from Cracow University of Technology; in 2005 received a DrSc in technical sciences, discipline in civil engineering, specialization in structural dynamics, from Cracow University of Technology. Dr. Kuźniar s main field of research is theoretical and experimental (full-scale tests) analysis of soil-structure interaction in case of mining tremors, dynamic properties and dynamic response of buildings subjected to kinematic excitations, and application of neurocomputing in structural dynamics. Dr. Kuźniar has over 20 publications in peer reviewed journals and over 30 publications in conference proceedings. Mauro Mezzina is full professor in structural design since 1991 at Politecnico di Bari, Italy. Formerly the dean of the Faculty of Architecture, he is the director of department ICAR of Politecnico of Bari. He has been a member of the directional board of ANIDIS (Italian National Association for Earthquake Engineering), CTA (Board of Technicians of Steel
7 About the Authors 439 Construction), and a member of organizing and scientific committee of several national and international conferences on earthquake engineering, diagnostics, and vulnerability. He is member of the scientific board of the research centers Tecnopolis and CIRP. Currently, he teaches structural design in undergraduate courses and in the PhD program in structural engineering of Politecnico of Bari. His main research fields include earthquake engineering and seismic risk reduction; stochastic dynamics; diagnostics; vulnerability assessment; analysis of historical and modern masonry structures; nonlinear analysis of structures; and damage mechanics applied to the modelling of masonry structures. Bartosz Miller is an assistant professor at Department of Structural Mechanics, Rzeszów University of Technology, Rzeszów, Poland. He received an MSc (1994) and PhD (2002) degrees from Rzeszów University of Technology, both in civil engineering. His research interests include the application of soft-computing methods, mainly neural networks, in the structural mechanics. His publications concern the updating of computational models and the detection and identification of failures and damages in engineering structures. He is the author of about 30 publications and conference papers concerning neural network applications in structural mechanics. Manolis Papadrakakis is a professor of structural engineering at the School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). His research activity is focused on the development and the application of computer methods and technology to structural engineering analysis and design. He is involved in the following scientific activities: Editor of the International Journal Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering (CMAME); honorary editor of the International Journal of Computational Methods (IJCM); president of the Greek Association for Computational Mechanics (GRACM); member of the editorial board of eight international scientific journals and reviewer in 40 scientific journals; fellow, corresponding member of the Executive Council and member of the General Council of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM); and chairman of the European Committee on Computational Solid and Structural Mechanics (ECCSM). Michael John Perry gradated from the National University of Singapore with first-class honours in civil engineering in 2003, under the Asia New Zealand Singapore Scholarship program. After receiving the award for the top civil engineering student, he has continued his studies under an NUS research scholarship. His area of PhD research is in developing genetic algorithm identification strategies for structural and offshore applications. Shahram Pezeshk, PhD, ΡΕ, is the Emison distinguished professor of civil engineering at The University of Memphis, Tennessee. Α graduate of the University of Illinois and University of California at Berkeley; he currently teaches graduate courses in geotechnical earthquake engineering and structural design. Pezeshk is the chairman of the Optimal Structural Design Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is the recipient of numerous awards of excellence in teaching and research and contributor to many national and international journals. His primary areas of research are engineering seismology; structural optimization, non1inear structural response, and mid-america earthquake hazard analysis.
8 440 About the Authors Grzegorz Piątkowski was awarded his MSc in 1994 and PhD in dynamic of structures in 2003 by Rzeszów University of Technology. Now he is assistant professor at Department of Structural Mechanics, Rzeszów University of Technology, Rzeszów, Poland. His research is oriented at the application of computational technology to structural mechanics especially the damage detection in structures, the use of soft-computing methods in mechanics, and the modelling by finite element method and some aspects of data processing. He is the author of series of publications and conference papers concerning neural network applications in structural mechanics. Ananth Ramaswamy received his Bachelor of Technology in civil engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India, in He completed his MS and PhD degrees from University of California at Davis, and Louisiana State University (1986 and 1992, respectively). He is currently associate professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. His research interests include FRP composites; smart materials; structural vibration control; structural and shape optimization; reinforced, prestressed, and fiber reinforced concrete; and bridge engineering. Eysa Salajegheh received his PhD in the area of structural engineering from the University of Surrey, England, in He is currently professor of civil engineering at the University of Kerman, Iran. He held the position of visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1985 and He has published over 150 research papers in international journals and conferences. His current research interests include structural optimization, earthquake engineering, and space structures. He has received numerous honours and awards and has been chosen as distinguished professor of Kerman University and Ministry of Science, Research and Technology of Iran. Mauricio Sanchez-Silva was born in Bogotá, Colombia, in He received his BS (1989) and MS (1992) from Los Andes University (Colombia) and his PhD from the University of Bristol, U.K. (1996). Since 1996, he has been working as professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Los Andes University (Bogotá, Colombia). In addition, he has been visiting scholar at the Technical University Munich (Germany) and Texas A&M University (USA). His main areas of research are reliability and risk analysis with applications to structural safety and structural deterioration processes. Other areas of interest include statistical learning processes, structural optimization, life-cycle analysis, and disaster-engineering related issues. Giuseppina Uva is associate professor of structural design at Politecnico di Bari, Italy. She received an MSc degree with honours in civil engineering in 1994 from the Politecnico of Bari and a PhD in computational mechanics in 1997, from University of Calabria, Italy. In 1999, she joined the department ICAR of Politecnico of Bari as assistant professor, where she presently works as associate professor. Currently, she teaches structural design and structural rehabilitation at the faculty of architecture of Bari. She is member of the teachers board of the PhD Program in Computational Mechanics of the University of Calabria.

Zenon Waszczyszyn is a professor emeritus and full professor of Cracow University of Technology, Poland, and full professor of Rzeszów University of Technology, Poland; member of Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw, and Polish Academy of Science and Arts, Cracow. DHC of Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary. In he was associated with Cracow University of Technology, where he was awarded an MSc in civil engineering and a PhD in structural mechanics. His research interest has included nonlinear structural mechanics; stability of structures; theory of plasticity; shells and plates; and, especially, various computational methods. Since 1995, he has continued research and educational activity in the field of soft computing and applications of neural networks in civil and structural engineering. He is author and co-author as well as editor of eight books and about 250 papers written in English and Polish. Leonard Ziemiański is professor and head of the department of structural mechanics at the Rzeszów University of Technology, Rzeszów, Poland. His research is concerned with the application of computational technology especially artificial intelligence techniques to structural mechanics. Leonard Ziemiański was awarded his MSc (1977) by Cracow University of Technology, Cracow, and PhD (1985) by AGH University of Sciences and Technology, Cracow. Current application area include the use of soft-computing methods in engineering, the artificial methods in mechanics, the structural health monitoring, and the damage detection in structures. He is the author of over 100 publications concerned with various aspects of engineering computation and experimental research.
