1 Akira Wada Professor Emeritus, Tokyo Institute of Technology President of Architectural Institute of Japan Council Member, Science Council of Japan President of ANCER (Asian-Pacific Network of Centers for Earthquake Engineering Research) Personal history Dr. Akira Wada is a Professor Emeritus at Tokyo Institute of Technology. He graduated from the department of architecture and building engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology at 1968 and the master course at He became a member of structural engineering division of Nikken Sekkei Ltd., one of large architecture and engineering design firm in Japan. He got a degree of doctor of engineering at He returned to Tokyo Institute of Technology as an associate professor, He was promoted to a professor at structural engineering research center of same Institute in He had been staying in USA as a foreign lecturer at the University of Washington on 1984 and as a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on His research interests are structural engineering of architectures and buildings, seismic design, seismic isolated structures, damage-controlled design and computer simulation of structures. Architectural Institute of Japan gave a research award of 1995 for his work Analytical and experimental researches of nonlinear behavior of building structures and an engineering award of 1993 for the work of his colleagues and him Invention and realization of damage controlled structures. Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Chicago, U.S.A. gave him 2011 Fazlur R. Khan Medal for his lifetime achievements. Now, he is president of Architectural Institute of Japan and a member of the Science Council of Japan.
2 BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Masayoshi Nakashima (November 2011) Professor and Director General Disaster Prevention Research Institute Kyoto University Gokasho, Uji, Kyoto JAPAN Voice: Fax: Summary: Masayoshi Nakashima is Professor of Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University ( He also serves Director of DPRI since Nakashima s fields of research include inelastic, stability, and collapse behavior of steel members and frames, seismic analysis and design of steel building structures, experimental techniques for simulating the earthquake responses of large structural systems, and seismic design of base-isolated buildings. He and his students have published some two hundred fifty technical papers, over one hundred of them in archival journals, of which Nakashima has received seven national research awards. Between 2004 and 2011, Nakashima served Director of E-Defense, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED). E-Defense is a research center that operates the world s largest shaking table ( He is Editor of the International Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (EESD), the official journal of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE). Nakashima was Vice-President of the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) from 2007 to 2009, a learned society of about 36,000 members with expertise in all areas associated with buildings and inhabitants, including architecture, urban planning, building engineering, and building physics. Over the past two decades, he had served on many AIJ research committees as chair or technical secretary, including the Disaster Response Committee, AIJ Journal Editorial Committee, and the Steel Building Committee. In 2009, he has stepped into the chair of the AIJ Structure Committee. He served on the board of directors in charge of foreign affairs for the Japan Association for Earthquake Engineering (JAEE) (2001 to 2003) and was elected to Vice-President of JAEE in Between 2008 and 2011, he also serves as Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) of the United States of America. He belonged to the Building Center of Japan s Peer Review Panel for the design of base-isolated buildings (1995 to 2005). Since 2003, he chairs the Review Panel of the Architecture and Building Engineering Program of the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE, equivalent to ABET in the United States of America).
