1 1 Updated through Fall 2013 Searching hints: Use Ctrl-F to find the species you are looking for Search for just a single word from the species name. e.g., search for black (rather than black-bellied whistling-duck ) Use the > arrow button in the find box to move to the next species that contains black. It may seem a little tedious to hit the > arrow button, but it is easier to search this way than it is to guess the exact words you need to search to get to the species you are looking for. Because of how the species names are formatted, it makes it very hard to search for Black-legged Kittiwake. Searching for just kittiwake will get you there quicker. 1

21 21 Shorebirds are the most difficult of Wisconsin birds when it comes to separating late spring departures from early fall arrivals. Early fall arrivals, many of which appear in mid to late June, might best be termed summer visitants. These summer visitants are adults in alternate plumage and can be any of the following failed nesters, unmated birds, males that have bred and departed and some which may have never reached the breeding grounds. These summer visitants arrive and then often remain in place until joined by regular fall migrants later in the season. While summering, these individuals might molt from alternate to basic plumage. For more details, see "Early Migrants Reconsidered, Eric Salzman, Birding, Vol. 28, pp Because it is perhaps impossible to separate the blend of summer visitants from the arrival of regular fall migrants, summer visitants for this report are usually lumped with early fall arrivals. 67.
