1 The Deepings Roll of Honour The Roll of Honour memorial plaques in our churches commemorate some, but not all, of those from our local communities who died in the First World War. Only West Deeping and Deeping Gate have lists of those who responded to the call of their King and country and survived. We do not know the criteria by which names were selected by the local memorial committees. They may have included servicemen and women who were born here, lived here, worked here or because next-ofkin lived here. Some individuals are commemorated on more than one local memorial especially if they were born, lived and worked in different parishes. A hundred years later, in 2014, The Deepings First World Commemoration Group decided to include in the Roll of Honour all those people who served for whom they could find records, whether they were connected to the Deepings by birth, residence or family. Their ranks have not been included in this list, although more details are known in some cases and are recorded in the project spreadsheet. The regiment listed is not necessarily the one to which a serviceman was first signed up. Some men served in several regiments during the four years of war. In many cases, men were transferred, often after being wounded; battalions or whole regiments were redistributed. The 1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry, for example, was disbanded to become the Machine Gun Corps. The Deepings Roll of Honour lists the regiment in which they were last serving, as far as can be established from available information. The list is not complete; many records have not survived but others continue to emerge. While every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, no guarantee can be made. Local researchers update the Roll of Honour spreadsheet whenever they find new information and if errors become evident. The names of those who fell in service are marked with a poppy. 35
