2 Marco Facchine, Architect and Assistant Professor of Urban Planning Marco Facchinetti, PhD, is an architect and assistant professor of urban planning at Polytechnic of Milano (DASTU) and visiting professor in many universities around US. During his research and studies he has been involved in national and international researches programs, always focusing on the physical transformations of urban spaces and architectures, following the growth and the changes of contemporary cities. Above all, he studies the way physical spaces express the way people live and the way urban uses connect and interact. He is responsible of workshops of urban planning and he is actively involved in many important processes of planning for urban regeneration and urban development, providing a new way to see urban transformations as opportunities to redevelop parts of cities. He believes that the best investment, for a better human living, is in forms, urban and human, connecting the way people dress, act, play to the way spaces can dress their lives

3 Marco Facchine, Architect and Assistant Professor of Urban Planning The Blossom Avenue is an initiative that promotes and creates better spaces for better human living. The rational that moves us is the following: people quality of life is affected by the spaces they live in. Better spaces means better quality of life. Moving from this principle we underline the connections between the different scales of design, from interiors to urban planning. The house you live in, the streets you walk on are environments that people inhabit all time and where quality design can make the difference. The links between quality design and quality of life it s something deeply grounded in the Italian culture, think of the aesthetic quality of many Italian cities. The Milanese architecture school of the 1950s from where we come from and from which we draw our inspirations made of this principle its mostly acknowledged trademark. From the spoon to the city was the motto of those years, meaning that every scale of design is related, every single parts contributes to the overall aesthetic quality of the built environment therefore of people quality of life.

4 Italy is recognized as one of the country with the largest number of extraordinary urban spaces of any other country. From Roman Empire to RaSonalism, the country has a unique catalog of urban spaces, recognized as the best planned of the world. Extraordinary urban spaces are ssll right in the middle of urban areas, and ssll at the center of everyday life for million of people, who can enjoy to live and work in such spaces. Squares, boulevards, streets are ssll today the center of the spasal organizason for many cises and they are ssll used for a mix of contemporary uses. It is a combinason of private and public uses, and it is a mix of architecture, design, urban planning so rich to transform simultaneously buildings and streets, private spaces and public areas It is a complex machine, so arsculated that all this porson of the city has been affected and re shaped, without limisng the use of space for daily private uses The mix of uses and the mix of private and public funcsons create a flexible flow of spaces, and architecture gives to this machine its great look. Its posison, at the confluence of the natural ridges of the system of hills above which Siena has been built, is confirmed as central and nodal in the territorial organizason Today s uses are almost public: the square is the place where the city gathers and where all the public events happen. 29 Galleria di Milano has been created as a master plan, put on the top of the exissng city, demolishing and erasing hundred of years of built up history. Poor houses and low income people have been relocated elsewhere, to make room for a new complex of rich buildings, shops and public spaces. 31 Urban spaces are not an object that can be replicated elsewhere. There are at least two main differences to keep into considerason: new spaces and exissng spaces New spaces cannot use the same organizason of the spaces coming from the past to host and represent today s public life. 67 The lesson.. Public spaces are supposed to host public every day life and to represent the way ciszens public life is organized In Italy, many of them are old spaces, built and rebuilt many Smes, changing their image but never changing their role in urban structure and organizason: only these spaces are ssll alive and can be considered as contemporary spaces The complexity of public life is now evident and a single urban space cannot pretend to represent it and to give an answer to all the aspects of public life: that s why contemporary space planning cannot separate architecture, urban planning, planning of uses Milan s case studies show how it is not a mawer of evoking historic forms: simple forms with complex organizason works bewer that complex form with no organizason Marco FacchineA Politecnico di Milano The Blossom Avenue
