2 IIM - Modeled on Glenn Murcutt Masterclass conducted annually in Sydney, The Workshop focuses on processes of observation and documentation as necessary precursors to speculation. The is conducted by two of Masterclass tutors, Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury, both accomplished teachers, practitioners and Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipients. Dr. B.V. Doshi will join Workshop on last two days for final reviews and lectures. For, participants will be invited to study edges of and suggest ways in which to negotiate chaotic urban environment on street with serene quality of campus. The aim is to attempt a bridge both physically (through architectural and programmatic ideas) and metaphorically between se two contrasting conditions. Though known internationally as a premier academic institution, IIMB is isolated from its immediate context and offers no opportunity for a dialogue. It is hope that through one begins to find a way to have Institute engage with city and vice versa. This also offers a real opportunity to address challenges posed by rapid urbanization and commercialism - how se edges are treated will hopefully offer clues for how quality could find its way back into our streetscapes. Conducted over 5 days, participants stay and work on IIM campus. Apart from daily events include lectures, music performances and discussions. Also included is one day trip to a local historic site, accommodation and food for duration of. 30 participants will work in 5 groups of 6 each (3 architects and 3 students). 3 IIM - Richard Leplastrier is a seminal figure in Australian architecture and architectural education. He eschews publicity and his built works are secret treasures to be discovered only by those privileged enough to be introduced to m. His sensitivity to issues of culture and place and his accumulated wisdom in design and making of architecture is gently revealed though his tutorial sessions in design studio. He received national recognition in 1999 through award of Gold Medal of Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Richard has received international recognition through receipt of 2004 Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award. The award, established in Finland by Wood in Culture Association, is granted every second year for architectural excellence. Or recipients of Award include 2000 Renzo Piano, Kengo Kuma, Peter Zumthor, José Cruz Ovalle from Chile and in 2010 to Hermann Kaufmann. He has been awarded Dreyer Foundation Prize of Honour 2009 in Denmark, first time an architect from outside Denmark has received this prize. Publications on work of Richard Leplastrier include book Richard Leplastrier Spirit of Wood Architecture Award 2004, edited by Petri Neuvonen and Kristiina Lehtimaki, published by Rakennustieto Oy, Finland, 2004 and various journal articles including Architecture and Place by Peter Stutchbury and Rory Spence in Architecture Australia, and Murcutt and Company by Lindsay Johnston in Architecture magazine (USA). 4 IIM - Peter Stutchbury is emerging as one of leaders of a new generation of Australian architects. He is recognised for his innovative approach to sustainability and design. A principal of firm Peter Stutchbury Architecture he has practiced independently since 1981 producing a wide variety of work. Projects have been published and acclaimed internationally. Peter has taught both nationally and internationally most recently as visiting professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico where he held Catedra Luis Barragán. He is currently a Professor at The University of Newcastle, Australia and one of distinguished masters with. Since 1995 his firm has won an unprecedented 39 Australian Institute of Architects Awards. In 2003 Peter became first Architect to win both National Architecture Awards for Residential and Public Buildings, repeating this in In 1999 he won overall National Metal Industries award of Excellence and in 2000 and 2008 The Australian Timber Award. In 2006 Peter was runner-up in Innovative Architectures Design and Sustainability award in Italy and in 2008 firm won International Living Steel Competition for extreme climate housing in Russia. Peter Stutchbury Architecture has exhibited work across Australia, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, France, New Zealand, South Africa, Namibia, USA and Slovenia and at Venice Architecture Biennale in Italy in both 2006 and This year he received national recognition through award of Gold Medal of Royal Australian Institute of Architects. Time spent living in desert country of western NSW during Peter s formative years, allowed him to develop an appreciation of logic behind Australian landscape and sensitive nature of its sustainability. He aspires to elevating status and respect that our wider environment deserves into day-to-day culture of architectural disciplines. In 2001, Peter Stutchbury s work was major contributor to University of Newcastle winning Australian Prime Minister s National Environmental Banksia Award for Sustainable Development. 5 IIM - Dr. Balkrishna Doshi, a Fellow of Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of of Architects was born in Pune in August 26th, After initial study at J J School of Architecture, Bombay, he worked for four years with Le Corbusier as Senior Designer ( ) in Paris and four more years in India to supervise his projects in Ahmedabad. His office Vastu-Shilpa (environmental design) was established in Dr. Doshi has been a member of Jury for several international and national competitions including Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Apart from his international fame as an architect, Dr. Doshi is equally known as educator and institution builder. He has been first founder Director of School of Architecture, Ahmedabad ( ), first founder Director of School of Planning ( ), first founder Dean of Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology ( ), founder member of Visual Arts Centre, Ahmedabad and first founder Director of Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad. Dr. Doshi has been instrumental in establishing nationally and internationally known research institute Vastu-Shilpa Foundation for Studies and Research in Environmental Design. The institute has done pioneering work in low cost housing and city planning. 7 IIM - Founded in memory of based architect, Vimal Jain*, aims to bring design discourse and practice into public realm through s, lectures and exhibitions. In 2014, organized a one day conducted by four based architects, Soumitro Ghosh, Nagaraj Vastarey, Prashanth Pole and Vijay Narnapatti, looking at appropriating urban space for public use. The site chosen was Visvesvaraya Centre (Life Insurance Corporation headquarters) in, near Vidhana Soudha, designed by Charles Correa, which was originally conceived as a composition of buildings around a vibrant public plaza. For years this space has been inaccessible and hidden from view. The focused on this plaza and its potential as urban, public space. The received over 200 applications out of which 40 participants (architects and students) were chosen. In addition to we also invited architect Charles Correa and Prof. Jyotindra Jain for a conversation on art, architecture and public realm. These events were open to all. * Founding partner of much feted based architectural practice, Architecture Paradigm, Vimal was a prominent part of architectural community of city. Deeply interested in wider responsibilities of design professionals, he was keen to initiate and participate in conversations about art, design and larger community. Vimal was also an adjunct faculty at University School of Design, Mysore. 8 FAQ Who can apply? 4th and 5th year students and practicing architects. How to apply? Submit application form to com> along with required attachments: 1. Your portfolio / work samples (to be submitted along with application form) must contain examples of your best and most recent work. Portfolio should highlight applicant s ability to draw and make physical models. The portfolio should be in PDF format not exceeding 5MB word Statement of Purpose. What is Selection Procedure? We will select 15 Architects and 15 Students based on ir portfolio. Amongst 15 students, 2 best portfolios will be selected and ir registration fee will be waived. The teams will be prepared by organizers. What do participants need to bring? Accommodation and food are included in fee. All work will be manually produced. Please bring drawing/ drafting equipment.
