2 Four Class A, four Class AA troupes receive starred performances After watching, listening, and then individually critiquing 16 dramatic productions over two days, a panel of judges rated eight of them four in Class A and four in Class AA as starred performances. The festival was conducted at O Shaughnessy Auditorium on the St. Catherine University campus in St. Paul on February 9 and 10. Paid attendance was 1,211. Class A The four schools whose performances were cited for starred performances were (in order of performance) St. Paul Academy & Summit School for Eiffel Tour Wedding Party, Park Rapids Area for A Piece of my Heart, East Central for Second Star to the Right, and Mankato Loyola for Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll & Hyde Play. Representing Section 2, Mankato Loyola s starred performance of Chemical Imbalance: A Jekyll & Hyde Play by Lauren Wilson was directed by Lori Wolf and Charlotte Lena. This is a humorous Jekyll and Hyde play. The school was making its third appearance and earned its second starred rating. The school earned its only other star in Cast members were Madiline Heidl, Isabel Zwaschka, Becca Kolmeyer, Landon Javens, Kit Krmpotich, Emma Goebel, Andrew McCarty, Luiza Flores, Megan Hillesheim, Elizabeth Peller, and Tiara Coughlan. Representing Section 4, St. Paul Academy & Summit School s starred performance of Eiffel Tour Wedding Party was written by Jean Cocteau and translated by Dudley Fitts. The production was directed by Eric Severson. In this play, every work of the poetic has a hidden meaning that each person will interpret in his or her own way. The true symbol is planned. It emerges by itself and can be as frightening as a drop of poetry under a microscope. Cast members were Ben Atmore, Gemma Yoo, Lilly Ramalingam, Noa Carlson, Sonja Henze, Soph Lundberg, Maya Shrestha, Jonah Harrison, Drew Fawcett, Elise Parsons, Max Moen, Sylvie Schifsky, Dorienne Hoven, Phoebe Pannier, Drama One Act Play and Nora Povejsil. Crew members were Lea Moore, Tucker Waltenbaugh, Sabrina Rucker, Evan Barnes, and Olivia McCauley. This was the fifth appearance and fourth starred rating for St. Paul Academy & Summit School. The Spartans earned their previous stars in 1994, 2006, and Representing Section 6, Park Rapids Area s starred performance of A Piece of My Heart earned the school its 15th starred rating in its 28th appearance. The play, written by Shirley Lauro, was directed by Juliann Kjenaas and Victoria Harju. Drawing from the true stories of six women, A Piece of My Heart is a testament to the strength and courage of the military and civilian women who served in Vietnam. Emily Kern and Jonah Schmitz perform in Buffalo s starred perfor - mance of Amber Waves. This was Buffalo s third starred performance in four years and its 10th overall. Cast members were Myah Schultz, Emily Kjenaas, Amber Schroeder, Coral Johnson, Tori Campbell, Trinah Szafranski, Devin Cordahl, Peter Van Batavia, Kenny David, Katelynn Warmbold, Trevor Thelen, Elizabeth Bradt, Madison Malzahn, Sarah Merfeld, and Paige Leeseberg. Park Rapids Area earned its previous starred ratings in 1972, 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1991, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2009, 2010, 2011, and Representing Section 7, East Central s starred performance of Second Star to the Right by Aaron James was adapted from the novel Peter & Wendy by J.M. Barrie. This year s production was directed by Kathleen M. Ebnet, Richard Ebnet, and Aaron Jansen. East Central was making its 10th festival appearance and earned its sixth starred rating. The school earned its other top ratings in 1989, 2002, 2004, 2012, and In this play, Wendy Darling lives in London with her parents and her two younger brothers, John and Michael. When Peter Pan appears in the middle of the night, looking for his shadow, the three Darling children are whisked away to Neverland, where pirates do battle with the lost boys. This version of the classic story remains true in spirit to the 1911 novel, Peter and Wendy, bringing to life the magic and melancholy of J. M. Barrie's vision. This was Buffalo s 11th starred rating in 19 appearances. Amber Waves focuses on a southern Minnesota family struggling to hold on to their family farm and each other. It zeros in on the effects these problems have had on children of farm families while making the case for the special place of farming in our communities and our nation's well-being. Its themes could be just as applicable to the families of stockbrokers, store owners or any other occupation that suffer drastic downturns. The 2011 winner of the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play, The Normal Heart is a searing drama focusing on the beginning of the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York City between 1981 and It s about the public and private indifference to the AIDS plague and one man's lonely fight to awaken the world to the crisis. Judges rate the plays according to specific criteria, including pace, blocking, costuming, and projection of the play s meaning. Each production is limited to 10 minutes of stage preparation and 35 minutes of actual performance. The judges consult after each production and then openly critique each in front of the cast, crew, and audience. Starred perfor - mance ratings are determined by private balloting of the judges. One school from each of eight sections in each class gets to perform at the state level. There were 304 teams that participated in One Act Play this season; 206 in Class A and 98 in Class AA. Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence Each cast and crew member involved with these three productions was also presented a Spotlight on the Arts Award of Excellence recognition pin. This is a fine arts recognition award created by Wells Fargo, the League s premier sponsor, in cooperation with the League.
