3 Welcome Milan, February 13 th 2014 Dear Participant, It is a great pleasure for us to welcome you to Milan for the 2nd Conference of the Italian Association of Environmental. The Conference is hosted by the Department of Economics, Management and quantitative Methods (DEMM) of the University of Milan. The Conference takes place at the University headquarters in the very center of Milan, between via Festa del Perdono and via Sant Antonio. Our program is rich: 13 parallel sessions will introduce the 50 accepted papers out of the about 100 submitted. All were of high quality which resulted in a very competitive and challenging selection process. We are also particularly glad to present two very distinguished key note speakers: Anna Alberini, Professor at the University of Maryland, Department of Agriculture and Resource Economics, and Simon Dietz, Co- Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics. At the end of the first Conference day, the General Assembly of IAERE Members will take place. We warmly encourage you to participate and let your opinions and suggestions be heard. Furthermore, we invite you to join us at the conference dinner on Thursday evening and enjoy with us the sight of Milan s skyline by night. 6 Plenary Keynote Lectures Thursday, February 13, Do Car Markets Reward Fuel Efficiency? Evidence from the Swiss and Other Car Markets Anna Alberini, College of Agricultural and Resource Economics, University of Maryland and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei FEEM Chair: Marzio Galeotti, University of Milan Anna Alberini is a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park and an affiliate researcher with FEEM, Venice. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of California at San Diego. Alberini is an environmental and energy economist. Her environmental economics research focuses on non-market valuation, and especially on the estimation and valuation of environmental health effects. She also studied the response of regulated parties to environmental regulation, hazardous waste regulations and the effects of contamination on housing and neighborhood. Her energy economics work aims at estimating residential energy demand and its determinants, residential energy efficiency investments, and behavioral aspects of energy demand and use, including the use of information. Her papers have appears in Energy Economics, the Energy Journal, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Environmental and Resource Economics, and Ecological Economics, among others. Friday, February 14, Climate Change Mitigation as Catastrophic Risk Management Simon Dietz, Co-Director, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, London School of Economics Chair: Francesco Bosello, University of Milan, Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) and Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei - FEEM Simon Dietz is one of the founders and is a current Co-Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where is he also Director of the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy, and Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment. Simon is an environmental economist with diverse interests, from climate change to biodiversity and from decision theory to growth theory. As an undergraduate he studied Environmental Science at UEA Norwich and ETH Zürich, before completing an MSc and PhD at LSE in environmental policy and economics. In he was an analyst at the UK Treasury on the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change, and played a leading role in the Review s controversial modelling of the cost of inaction. He sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management and is a Principal for the consultancy Vivid Economics.

15 About IAERE The Italian Association of Environmental (IAERE) is a national scientific association which aims to: to contribute to the development and application of environmental and resource economics as a science in Italy; to encourage and improve communication between teachers, researchers and students in environmental and resource economics; to develop and encourage the cooperation between university level teaching institutions and research institutions in Italy; to make available to institutions research results and encourage their application; to develop and encourage cooperation among companies, trade unions and environmental NGOs. The Association accomplishes its aims mainly by organizing conferences, meetings, panels. The main Association s activity is its Annual Conference, inaugurated in 2013 at the University of Ferrara. IAERE s website serves as platform for exchange regarding events, open positions and other useful information in the field of Environmental and Resource Economics in Italy and beyond. IAERE was founded in 2012, and is based in Venice. Its members are mainly from Italy, from academic institutions, the public sector, and the private industry. Membership is open to individuals who by their profession, training and/or function are involved in environmental and resource economics as a science, and to institutions which operate in fields connected with the aims of the Association.
