5 PUBLIC EVENTS November 2013 EXHIBITION The Secret Life of Objects InsideArts Explore some of the hidden histories of the Theatre Collection s most interesting items in our new exhibition, The Secret Life of Objects. Through examining the life stories of objects we will look at their changing significance through place, time and the people who owned them. For further information W E theatre-collection@bristol.ac.uk T +44 (0) November 2013 EXHIBITION Building the Bristol Dinosaur Bristol s very own dinosaur, Thecodontosaurus, will be brought to life on the city s Harbourside this autumn when local artist Robert Nicholls from Paleocreations and Pedro Viegas from the School of Earth Sciences build a full-size replica of the beast, based on the very latest scientific discoveries about how it would have looked when it roamed around Bristol 210 million years ago. During the build there will be a series of talks open to the public covering the latest research in this area. No theatre company satisfied this renewed curiosity with the same visibility and commercial success as Damon Albarn, Jamie Hewlett and Chen Shizheng s Monkey: Journey to the West (2007). This talk will analyse the performance and explore the politics of depicting China through transnational citations. Recent changes have resulted in increasing threat to Egypt s ancient cultural heritage sites. This lecture will focus on current documentation, conservation, and restoration projects of Chicago House at four sites.

The lecture will follow their journey from Buralku, the land of the Morning Star, to Yalangbara through the songs, paintings, sacred objects and dances that recreate their spiritual journey. He will comment on the state of Bristol s economy and prospects for the future. The Mayor will present a picture of Bristol, describing a city where vibrant places and passionate people contribute to a resilient local economy that is about so much more than purely fiscal matters. Reflecting on the many and varied conversations the Mayor has had with people right across the city over the past 12 months, he will launch his vision for Bristol, The best city in England. This event will comprise of a 30 minute screening of Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti directed by Laura Mulvey and Peter Woolen. Following the screening, Laura Mulvey will discuss their discovery of Kahlo and Mexico in 1979 and will locate the film within the context of their work with avante-garde film and her engagement with feminist aesthetics in the 1970s. Adoption is now predominately used as an intervention for children in the care system. In this lecture, we will consider what we have learnt over the past 20 years about whether the considerable odds stacked against abused children can be beaten by placing them with an adoptive family. But these style innovations are never included in the regular celebrations of British street style. Overwhelmingly, the Muslim veil is regarded only as a controversial symbol, never as fashion. This presentation discusses how fashion is being used by young Muslim women in the formation of new identifications as Muslim that are often specifically western, and specifically British. 15 Thinking Futures 2013 Launch The festival kicks off in Bristol with the Transport Debate, a hot topic both in Bristol and nationally, with issues around residents parking, speed limits and public transport and sustainable travel regularly making the headlines. Join our panel of local and national experts as they debate the complex and contentious issues around transport. Also up for discussion. What motivates and de-motivates women s participation in physical activity? How can the placenta be viewed as an object that tells a story? How can we improve women s safety in Bristol? Is Britain facing a crisis of masculinity? How can we improve the presence of elected women politicians globally? What is living with poverty really like? The diverse geology and frequent eruptions from Mount Etna have produced some of the most fertile soils in Europe. This enabled a rich agriculture to develop with successive waves of invaders bringing in different plants. The resulting gardens, both historical and contemporary in style, have exuberant growth and many fruits. This lecture will illustrate some public and private gardens together with natural landscapes of this island that has been at the crossroads of the Mediterranean for thousands of years. The fresher and more local the better. No nasty chemicals or air miles. A welcome return of this popular instructor who this year will guide participants in producing a rope based decorated Christmas garland measuring 1.2 metres using fresh plant material.
