5 residential featured project house taylor maseru, lesotho client; warrick taylor project cost estimate: R2,7 million description: 4 bedrooms, 2 lounges house with double volume entertainment area and deck overlooking the city project status: procurement interpretation of brief this house was designed to interpret the american client's american dream house while reflecting its context, viz the rocky mountainous terrain that is maseru. it was part of - and the benchmark for - a major planned residential and commercial complex at the foot of the hill overlooking katlehong, where the maseru mall now sits. here opulence meets practicability and kingly grandeur the american dream.

6 residential featured project house pillay kirstenhof, constantia cape town, south africa client: Ravi Pillay and MelishaPillay project cost estimate: R450,000 description:extension to existing dwelling to accommodate a guest berdoom, double garage, laundry and two studies. project status: completed in 2015 interpretation of brief an extension to an existing house, this project presented a number of challenges in terms of the following: - tying in to the existing house; - respecting the neighbour's rights; - responding to the local authorities' restriction on the technicality of a second dwelling versus an outbuilding; - the client insisted on being closely involved in the project from the early stages to the construction and procurement processes. in addition to this the building had to comply with the new SANS Part XA - Energy Usage in Buildings in terms of heat loss/gain, water usage and hot water generation, energy usage, ventilation and lighting. This was particularly complex because all existing spaces on the property had to be proven to be compliant as part of the SANS Part XA requirement

7 residential featured project mugadza residence harare, zimbabwe client: tongai mugadza project cost estimate: $250,000 description:4 bedrooms, 2 lounges and a separate entertainment area. project status: design development interpretation of brief this residence is composed of two separate and apparently conflicting structures; the main house with mainly cubic engineered forms and materials and the outbuilding which combines the main building's features with the sculptural effect of a thatched roof. The main building has the primary spaces; while the outbuilding houses the entertainment facilities on ground floor and the guest wing on top floor. Movement is directed from the main entrance via the staircase lobby, through the dining/lounge areas and culminating at the pool deck and entertainment area

9 commercial prototype barclays bank branch harare, zimbabwe client; barclays bank zimbabwe ltd project cost estimate: $1,9 million description: banking hall, general enquiries hall, private and corporate suites on ground floor; and administrative offices on mezzanine floor. project status: research for project finalised. interpretation of brief the bank intended to develop freestanding buildings for their branches in the major towns and neighbourhoods of cities across the country. developing a prototype branch would ensure progressive fine-tuning of the design as experience and solutions from the previous branches commissioned would be used on future branches. the client s brief was based on an integrated approach to banking with services flowing smoothly within the spaces. this was also a good chance at re-branding the bank, which was now being seen as this old monolithic institution.

10 retail development stone mall maseru, lesotho client; warrick taylor project cost estimate: R56 million mall size: 6000m² description: two 1200m² anchor tenants, a number of line shops, 3 cinemas. project status: concept used for other projects. interpretation of brief: the client wanted a building that reflects the mountain terrain that s the kingdom of lesotho and also the people s culture. these two ideals were echoed by the importation of the natural sandstone found in abundance in lesotho and the incorporation of the omnipresent basotho hat (which covers the food court.) the main entrances are framed by huge sandstone arches that give the feeling of tunneling your way into the belly of the maluti. this also echoes the arched entrance to the traditional sotho hut.

11 health mt pleasant go-life private hospital research model client; go-life hospital group project cost estimate: $12 million hospital size: 60 bed with capacity to service 75 other services: 24 hour energency unit, digitalised x-ray unit laboratory, private suites project status: project suspended pending funding deal finalisation. special considerations and buzzwords: form that echoes the context hospital environment aiding the healing process - salutogenic approach to hospital design; idea of happy environment aiding the happiness of the user renewable energy sources inclusion of local human and professional resources - artwork project. consultation with the local community

12 leisure & tourism gugulethu hotel concept sketches for client client; private client project cost estimate: R45million size: 110 room hotel; capacity to service 130 project status: feasibility concept for client overview: Gugulethu Hotel is set in the heart of Gugulethu, next to a series of amenities and attractions, and is linked to various shopping centres and night-spots. The site is only 5km from the Cape Town International Airport and about 20km from the Cape Town City centre. The hotel allows the street to flow into the property to create a smooth-flow of activities from the entrance to the swimming pool and braai area at the back. This back area can also be used as an entrance by pedestrian patrons and can be rearranged for private outdoor functions like weddings. The hotel spots two restaurants, one dedicated to African cuisine, a bar which flows into the external braai area to create the "chesa nyama" effect so popular "ekasi". Guests can select from various spa treatments and utilize the business centre. Excursions, "township tours" and various City and Cape Peninsula tours can be arranged at the tour desk.
