4 Presenting Speakers Andrew Kiel Andrew Kiel, born in Flemington, New Jersey, came to Germany in 1993 after completing studies at the University of Virginia and Princeton University. Between 1993 and 1998, Andrew worked in various offices in Germany, including Büro Prof. Kleihues. Andrew s work with sauerbruch hutton began 1999 with an assignment as project architect for the experimental factory building in Magdeburg, Germany. As project architect for other projects such as the Environmental Agency in Dessau, Germany, Andrew has gained extensive experience designing sustainable buildings. sauerbruch hutton is an international agency for architecture, urbanism and design, founded in Presently, they employ about 100 architects, designers, engineers, modelmakers, and administrative staff. The team is led by Matthias Sauerbruch, and Louisa Hutton, Juan Lucas Young, as well as Jürgen Bartenschlag and Andrew Kiel. sauerbruch hutton realize individual and sustainable solutions to a wide range of programs. The enjoyment of the sensuality of space and material, as well as mastery of up-to-date technology is combined with the intelligent use of existing resources of every kind. Helmut Meyer Trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the Technical University in Stuttgart, Helmut Meyer is now Principal of Transsolar Energietechnik GmbH in Stuttgart, Germany. He also serves as an executive director of Transplan Bautechnik GmbH, a sister company of Transsolar that provides full building services engineering. A specialist in the fields of integrated building systems and energy efficiency in buildings, Helmut has developed energy and building services concepts for projects around the world noted for their innovative design and low energy use. Among his projects in Germany, are the Theaterhaus Stuttgart, a naturally-ventilated, multipurpose building, as well as new Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Transsolar is a leading climate engineering firm whose scope is to ensure the highest possible comfort for people with the lowest possible impact on the environment. Climate engineering seeks to improve the built environment s impact on the environment while maintaining the highest comfort. Transsolar accomplishes this by developing and validating innovative climate and energy concepts. This generates a solution in which local conditions, form, material, and mechanical systems are integrated components of a well-orchestrated climate control system, which reduces operating costs while increasing occupant comfort. Dr. Timo Schmidt Dr. Timo Schmidt is Project Engineer at Werner Sobek Stuttgart and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He studied architecture in Munich and received a Master of Architecture from the Bartlett in London. He did his PhD thesis in cooperation with both the Institute of Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart and the Center for Regenerative Biology and Medicine (zrm) at the University of Tuebingen. An expert on self-structuring mechanisms in biopolymer materials, Timo researches new technologies in the field of lightweight structures. While the ILEK specializes in researching new materials and concepts for lightweight and adaptive structures, Werner Sobek s office is one of the leading engineering consultancies in Europe. It excels through excellent engineering combined with first-rate design of constructional elements and sophisticated concepts for sustainable buildings. A particular focus lies on special structures made of steel, glass, titanium, concrete, textiles, and wood. Werner Sobek has offices in Stuttgart, Cairo, Dubai, Frankfurt, Moscow, and New York.

5 Presenting Speakers Tom Kubala Their life-long goal as architects has ever been to make a building that smiles. With that seemingly innocuous aim in mind, Tom Kubala and Allen Washatko began, in 1980, an architectural practice in the basement of Tom s rented townhouse. Although their studio now numbers 30 members, the grail of finding out how to make living architecture has persisted, evolved and matured. The Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc. embraces a design philosophy of Wholeness, where the constructed environment supports and enhances both human activity and natural living systems. The idea of sustainability is a natural extension of wholeness-based thinking, and is integrated into every studio project. Design services include community and master planning, architecture, interior design, historic preservation/adaptive re-use, interpretive planning, and LEED certification. Representative project types include cultural creative communities, commercial/retail centers, museums, offices, nature and interpretive centers, urban farm facilities, and libraries. Current TKWA projects are located throughout the United States and in Costa Rica. Jaime Torres Carmona Jaime Torres Carmona is an architect living and practicing in Chicago. After receiving his BSAS and MArch degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Jaime was awarded the Edward L. Ryerson Traveling Fellowship for an architectural study in the Netherlands. This provided Jaime with great exposure to new solutions in urban design and sustainability. Following this experience Jaime worked as Project Architect in the offices of Booth Hansen, McBride Kelley Baurer & Urban Works, three award winning design firms in Chicago. Prior to pursuing his own architectural practice at Canopy, Jaime was awarded the Clyde Lee and Jane Cecilia Baker Traveling Fellowship. He spent six weeks in Germany studying low- and high-tech solutions for energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings. Canopy / architecture + design was founded in 2009 and is a full service architecture firm led by Jaime Torres Carmona. For every project, Canopy places emphasis on context, resources, climate and technology in order to better serve the needs of the client and end user. The design process can reach beyond the already established methods, and embrace a specialized, integrated approach, merging aesthetics, ecology, and economy into one unified solution. Charles Bostick Charles Bostick is a registered State of Illinois architect who has worked extensively in Germany as well. He has worked in just about all the capacities an architect has to do, from design, project coordination, to detailing, shop drawing review, and construction supervision. Starting as a young architect working in Tony Belluschi s office helping to detail the skylight that is over the American Airlines Terminal at O Hare, to working with James Carpenter on a glass sculpture for an office building in Munich, as well as his work with Helmut Jahn since 1989 up to the present and his work since 2005 with the glass manufacturer and contractor, seele, his constant has always been working with glass. Clarity, precision, and lightness. The seele group uses these concepts to realize the visions of renowned architects. seele offers a unique service and production range: from comprehensive consulting on development and production, through to the final, local assembly. With over 750 employees at 10 locations worldwide, the group sets the standard in glass, steel, aluminum, and membrane architecture. This expertise allows seele to create building shells with a minimal supporting structure and maximum transparency like the Apple Cube in New York. But seele also creates glass bridges and stairs, as well as light surface loadbearing structures and elegant membrane structures. Since the company s founding in 1984, seele has represented the symbiosis of perfect craftsmanship and excellence in engineering.

6 Presenting Speakers Sachin Anand Sachin Anand is a principal at dbhms and has designed, commissioned, and managed projects from commercial, residential, and healthcare, to industrial and award-winning sustainable. Sachin brings several years of experience to the team. He is an Adjunct Professor at IIT s College of Architecture. Active in ASHRAE, Sachin frequently presents on topics of sustainability for a multitude of audiences. He has been a reviewer for projects which apply for the City of Chicago Green Permit Program. He has a Master s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University. Founded in 2002, dbhms is a minority-owned, engineering consulting firm that has become an industry leader for creative engineering solutions for building systems. With over 80% of projects integrating sustainable/green components, dbhms is at the forefront of today s design. Possessing a lengthy list of discerning clientele, we have been involved in Chicago projects ranging from the renowned Aqua Tower to the Green Exchange, the country s largest sustainable business community. In addition to all aspects of building systems design, dbhms provides a multitude of sustainable-related services including Energy Modeling, Building Commissioning, LEED Consulting, and building performance analyses. Mark Frisch Mark Frisch is Principal in Charge of Technical Design at Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB). He is responsible for technical oversight of all client projects; initiatives in innovative materials, systems and sustainability, and quality assurance. He consults internationally on LEED Certification and emerging design technologies that utilize alternative energy solutions. Frequently, Mr. Frisch collaborates with new-energy partners from around the world, including Stuttgart-based Transsolar Climate Engineering. Working with Transsolar consultants, he led the sustainable design innovations for the award-winning Information Commons at Loyola University Chicago. Notable awards include the Leaf Award for Best Use of Technology and winning the U.S. Department of Energy s Sunwall Design Competition. Mr. Frisch received both his Bachelor s and Master of Architecture degrees from the University of Illinois, where he was the recipient of the Long Traveling Fellowship. Solomon Cordwell Buenz is an award-winning architecture, interior design, and planning firm that practices internationally from offices in Chicago, San Francisco, and Abu Dhabi. In 78 years, SCB has compiled a diversified portfolio of projects in a range of building types, including urban mixed-use, multi-family residential, higher education, and corporate office. The firm is recognized for innovative, sustainable, and contemporary solutions that balance aesthetics, cost, constructability, comfort, and the latest energy-efficient technology. Antony Wood Antony Wood has been Executive Director of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) since Prior to this, he was CTBUH Vice-Chairman for Europe and Head of Research. His tenure has seen a revitalization of the CTBUH, with an increase in output and initiatives across all areas. Antony is also an Associate Professor at the IIT College of Architecture, where he convenes various tall building design studios. Prior to joining the Council and IIT, Antony was an Associate Professor / Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Nottingham in the UK from A UK architect by training, Antony s field of specialization is the design, and in particular, the sustainable design of tall buildings. The CTBUH, based at IIT in Chicago, is an international not-for-profit organization supported by architecture, engineering, planning, development, and construction professionals, designed to facilitate exchanges among those involved in all aspects of the planning, design, construction, and operation of tall buildings. Founded in 1969, the Council s mission is to disseminate multi-disciplinary information on tall buildings and sustainable urban environments, to maximize the international interaction of professionals involved in creating the building environment, and to make the latest knowledge available to professionals in a useful form.
