Via Maiocchi 5, 20129, MILAN Nationality: Italian Date of birth 11/05/76 Telephone Fax Curriculum vitae Nicola Russi was born in Milan 1976, he gained his high school diploma at the Alessandro Volta Scientific Lyceum, Milan and went on to study architecture at the, winning a place on a year long Erasmus project at the University of Technology (TU), Delft (NL). During his time at university he worked with the Frank Augustin studio, Berlin, and Privileggio Secchi studio, Milan, graduating with a first class degree (100/100) in 2002, with a thesis entitled Continuous discontinuity, new forms of settlement in northern Milan, supervisor Cesare Macchi Cassia. For his postgraduate studies he took a Phd. in Architecture, Urban Design, Housing and Landscape Conservation and at the same time began working at Macchi Cassia Associati, subsequently Metrogramma studio, as studio head. Here he achieved projects of great complexity, showing a particular interest for the relationship between architecture and the urban context. He cooperated with the Milan municipal authorities in drawing up the new Territorial Zoning Plan and in 2007 gained his Phd. with a thesis entitled Designing the environment, urban design in the contemporary world. While continuing his commitment with the Architectural Design and Planning Department of the Milan Polytechnic, and carrying out an intense teaching program in architectural and urban planning & design, in 2008, along with the architect Angelica Sylos Labini, he founded the professional architectural studio Laboratorio Permanente, of which he is artistic director and cultural guide. The studio deals with projects on all scales, using professional opportunities as a stimulus for research and teaching activities. The studio tackles works of public interest at both national and international level. In 2012 it won an honorary mention in the Italian Gold Medal Architecture Awards. 6 C. Scientific Activity 1. Description of Scientific Activity His teaching and professional activity has been accompanied by intensive research work due to his involvement in the scientific programs of the, as well as by consultancy work for various public bodies such as the Milan City Authorities for drafting new General Masterplan, the EFAP/RIAI for designing the architectonic renewal and regeneration of the West Dublin and the Venice Biennale for the Fourteenth International Exhibition of Architecture, not to mention his activity within the Cultural Association ANCSA (Italian National Association of Historic Centers) of which Nicola Russi is a member of the Executive Council. Within his professional activity, Nicola Russi works on projects of different scales, using professional opportunities to stimulate his research. His office (Laboratorio Permanente) is engaged in public and private commissions which have an impact on national and international level. Among the main projects: Renovation and restoration project of an nineteen thirties building and swimming pool, converted to an Art and cultural centre by Franco Parenti theatre in Milan; exhibition design at Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow; project for a new cultural district, shopping centre and hotel in Shanghai French Concession historical district Coordinator of the research project Landscape Has No Rear" funded by the Venice Biennale 2014 "Fundamentals" in the "Monditalia" section. The research study investigates the relationship between the major infrastructures and the Italian agricultural landscape. Case study: The station of Mediopadana in Reggio Emilia. Research conducted on behalf of the Italian National Historical Center Association, coordinated by professor Bruno Gabrielli, with Roberto Gambino, Franco Mancuso, Nicola Russi, Roberto Spagnolo, Fabrizio Toppetti. The study led to the creation of an atlas that contains information, data, maps, scenarios and design criteria potentially useful in helping technicians and citizens formulate proposals and share decisions which the Milan City Administration will have to take in constituting the new Municipalities. 7 2010 Participation in the landscape Project of Compensation and Mitigation of Architecture and Landscape along the Milan East Ring Road as part of a consultancy for TEEM. The research project has developed a proposal for coordination of individual compensation and mitigation projects through the development of design strategies along the route of the new infrastructure. The consulting work initially centred on the development of the city through projects on a local scale. The result was a map where the zones were not outlined in terms of their administrative boundaries, but rather on the basis of patterns of social and cultural morphological identity. These areas were called nuclei of local identity". 88 nuclei were identified, each with their own set of critical issues but also with their potential for development. ISBN Vivere la città/living the city/vivir la ciudad The book is the outcome of a study drawn up by ANCSA, (the Italian National Historical Town Centre Association, set up by Giovanni Astengo in ), whose current president is Francesco Bandarin (Special Advisor to the UNESCO General Director), Nicola Russi being a member of the organisation s Executive Council. ANCSA is an international association and has offices and affiliates in Europe and Latin America. The association aims to promote the cultural heritage and to stimulate operational initiatives in support of the action of public authorities for the preservation and rehabilitation of existing settlement structures. Among its main activities, every two years ANCSA organizes the Premio di Gubbio, an international architectural and urban design competition aimed at identifying the most significant experiences of the last years in the field of architectural and urban design inside historical cities. Living the city is a traveling exhibition and a volume of which Nicola Russi is curator, together with Franco Mancuso, Stefano Storchi, Fabrizio Toppetti and Mauro Volpiano, which presents the main Premio di Gubbio winning projects, that are capable of increasing the quality of locations in accordance with principles of livability, sustainability and innovation. Starting from this study, that has enjoyed international attention and has been presented in Argentina and Ecuador, ANCSA is delving deeper into the situation in Italy, promoting a survey on the state of Italy's architectural and urban heritage. This research will be illustrated in the "White Book of Italian historical centers" that is currently being written. At the same time the association has launched a series of books entitled "ANCSA documents" for which Nicola Russi is part of the editorial board, together with Francesco Bandarin, Enrico Fontanari, Stefano Storchi, Fabrizio Toppetti, Mauro Volpiano. 2.M. ISBN Progettare il Contesto Building the Context The research developed in the PhD thesis has as its object the relationship between architecture and its contextual surrounds. The rereading of this report via the principal modern and contemporary projects creates new categories of interpretation of the architectural project. The contextual surrounds are no longer seen as a background to the project but as an object of the same architectural design, subverting and overcoming some of the main dichotomous oppositions historically present in the discipline. The contrast between artifice and nature, figure and background, solid and void loses meaning, giving way to new and more complex relationships between the artefact and the territory that accommodates the same. This research study has enjoyed international success and has been illustrated in numerous universities, including the London Architectural Association, as part of the mid-term review of the Giulia Foscari's urban design workshop. It has also been published in the international San Rocco journal and featured at the 2014 Venice Biennale with the installation "Landscape Has No Rear. From this work Nicola Russi is developing a study entitled Backgrounds, investigating the updated role of architecture and urban design in the city today, including new forms of temporary and participatory design. The study will lead to a book-collection of contemporary projects built all over the world by architects, urbanists and landscape designers. The resulting projects were analysed and grouped according to different thematic areas and the main ones of these have been described in specific texts accompanied by photographs and technical images. The book also includes contributions by Italian and international scholars on the subject of architecture, including the reviews of the major publications of the period and the critical analysis of the most important political, economic and cultural events. The Yearbook, that has worldwide distribution, was conceived as a pilot project to be replicated periodically. Nicola Russi is Vice Director and author of numerous excerpts in the Yearbook and has contributed to the design and development of this innovative architectural almanac, the first to have collected together works and projects following a scientific principle on a global scale.
